Regions Bank in Hiram to close

Regions Bank plans to close or consolidate 121 bank branches in 16 states in early 2010, but the cost-cutting move won’t affect any offices in the Athens area, a company spokeswoman said this morning.

 

“There won’t be any consolidation in Athens proper,” said Regions Bank spokeswoman Evelyn Mitchell, who added that the closings won’t affect any branches in nearby counties, either.

 

Regions Bank branches in Commerce, Jefferson, Madison and Winder will remain open. Employees at the branches targeted for closing will be relocated within the company, Mitchell said. The bank will close branches in 16 Georgia cities but in many cases will be consolidating those into nearby offices in the same markets, said Kelli Nix, North Georgia area marketing manager for Regions Bank. “It’s not that we’re pulling out of these markets, it’s just that we’re making some efficiencies,” Nix said. For example, the company will close one of its Toccoa branches but relocate its staff and services to the bank’s main branch in Toccoa. The Helen branch will close but be consolidated into the Cleveland branch, Nix said.

 

Regions Bank also will close Georgia branches in Augusta, Bainbridge, Calhoun, Columbus, Cornelia, Dillard, Evans, Gainesville, Hiram, Rome, Rutledge, Savannah, Thomson and Valdosta.

 

The company expects to realize net cost savings of $21 million annually through all 121 branch closings, which are expected to occur on Jan. 29.

 

The plans were announced as part of Regions’ third-quarter earnings report.

I hate that the one on 92 is closing because I've banked with them for years.

 

I hope not all of their employees go to the one on 278. There is one in particular that does not seem to know what he's doing. When my company changed our insurance coverage to catastrophic coverage only, I did not renew. I took the premiums I was paying and opened a separate account to put the money in so that we'd have the money if we needed to go to the doctor. When I opened the account, the lady somehow linked the new account to my other account. Whenever I'd use the new account, it would pull money from my original account and not the new one. I found out about it only because my husband put our vacation money in the new account, and we used that account when we were in Florida. We ended up with two bounced checks in our original account. When I went to the bank, I found out that the new account was set up to pull money from the original account. The man I dealt with refused to refund the insufficient fund charges and tried to tell me that somehow I had fixed it that way. We went round and round for about a week!!! There's no way I could have done that. I've used on line banking for years and it's impossible to change things on your accounts. Somehow the person who opened the account for me did it, but you couldn't make this man understand that. I threatened to close my account, and then he offered to reverse ONE of the insufficient fund charges!!!

 

This past Saturday, I took the final check from my insurance company for my roof repairs to be cashed so that I could pay my roofers. It was above the cashier's limit, so she had to get this same man to approve it for her. Well--he refused and said I'd have to deposit it and wait 3 days to get my money. I was furious!!! I had just cashed the first one two weeks before with no problems. He wasn't there that day. Someone else approved it. I went to the bank on 278 and got it cashed with no problems. I think this particular man likes to make simple things difficult for folks. I hope they put him somewhere other than the one on 278. If I have to have any more dealings with him, I will definitely be looking for a new bank!!!
