  1. The society at large has an obligation to protect itself with restrictions that would fit the reasonable and foreseeable principle as it applies to all products. This is very, very basic.
  2. No, you've missed the point. There are some things that can be manipulated in such a way that society recognises reasonable restrictions are necessary, e.g., fertilser and even over the counter cold medications. Pressure cookers don't require restrictions because it is not reasonable to do so. Who said anything about being anti-gun? I'm merely pointing out the fallacy of the argument of the original poster. The argument is juvenile and not reasonable.
  3. No, it's not a valid argument. The pressure cooker was misused. A pressure cooker is designed, marketed and presented for food. A gun has - as it's purpose - to discharge an element designed to do harm, in either a protective or defensive mode. Either way, the design and use does harm. It's a silly argument.
  4. The Boy Scouts of America has proposed lifting its ban on gay scout participants and the offering will be put to an organisational vote next month. My link
  5. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control has issued a directive to American hospitals and other care facilities to be vigilant of the new strain of "Bird Flu." While there is no cure, there are indications that normal anti-viral precautions and treatments might be effective. The problem is that the very preliminary indications are that the new strain is genetically very adaptive. My link
  6. I can tell you that my budget has been increasing because of the fact we're having to staff what we know is a larger employee pool. However, the profits are up. Why? Because we are getting paid now since the Affordable Health Care Act makes sure of it. Granted, we have more paperwork and more regulations (some impossible) but our bottom line is much better, and my area is VASTLY improved.
  7. He manipulates the audiences with conspiracy theory and half-truth. He is up there with the Thatcherites.
  8. And yet 2/3 of the American 100$ bills are still outside the borders of the United States. How, then, can anyone say the American economy is awful? It is not. It is slow. It is steady. It has room to improve, but it is in VASTLY better condition than it was in the Fall of 2008. Now back to writing the reports.
  9. Sorry. Been busy with accreditation this week. Again, the report referenced in this thread was an anomaly, just like I said. My link If you want evidence, here are the latest numbers. It says, as I did, there was an anomaly. It was a normal volatile number. That is normal as things don't go straight up. There was modest to moderate growth in the economy. More slow and steady. The report came out today, in fact. My link

I completely disagree. It is impossible to measure the effectiveness of a university prep teacher verses the effectiveness of a repeat pre-algebra instructor. Impossible. An art teacher cannot be measured the same as a math instructor. Assessments of the students cannot be an adequate measure of the teacher effectiveness. Sine the matrix doesn't take into account demographics, more wealthy school districts may have less effective teachers, but the raw material of the students will produce better test scores. No, I completely disagree.

Anytime the political leaders get involved, the problems are magnified. Attempting to make education function and be assessed as a business - with like business model results - is impossible.
  12. In an amazing notation of animal grief, the TIME article notes that grief affects different people in different ways, even in the animal kingdom. My link
  13. These situations, though tragic, do exist and happen more than anyone would like to admit. Usually, it is not generally known since the parents/guardians don't broadcast the information. Still, it does happen.
  14. The link is not a fossil, but a language trait. Specifically, the great apes - while vocal - don't demonstrate all the necessary skills to formulate language as humans do. However, one particular monkey, the gelada baboon, does demonstrate the rudimentary functions of genuine language: inflection; pauses; even laughter. My link
  15. UK scientists have been studying the linkage between a Spring seasonal birthday and a higher incidence of MS. The studies have long shown a correlation, but not a causation, other than fodder for the uninformed that likewise believe in the veracity of Tarot Cards. But the latest studies are looking for deeper correlations, and one such finding is that Spring seasonal birthdays generally mean lower levels of vitamin D that other seasonal birthdays. Why this is, and exactly how such a correlation works is still being analysed. My link
  16. A specific branch of the rodent evolutionary tree - with some genetically modified DNA - are helping scientists understand the human disease of Alzheimer's. The scientists had been trying to study the human disease in mice, but the attributes never matched well enough with the human formatting of the DNA. So a specific type of rodent was discovered to have other similar human physiological aging characteristics. By modifying the DNA to enhance the Alzheimer disease in these specific rats, scientists are better able to study the human disease. My link
  17. I just ask people read the article. If they don't and yet respond with something that is obvious they didn't read the article, that is their problem, not mine. I am spinning nothing. I just post an article and watch the people respond without even reading what the thread was about. It is quite entertaining. Like you said before, just ignore me if you don't like what I have to say. My link Actually, I thought you would be happy that I was passionate about my causes. My link The article is there. If someone wants to respond, she should at least read the article. Otherwise, she look

  20. The United States Air Force is contending with the issue of sexual assault among its enlisted personnel and the call is for a culture change in that branch of the American military. My link
  21. Last week a federal judge in the US province of New York ruled that the US Food and Drug Administration was wrong to issue guidelines for the Plan B drug, and ruled it must be made available without a script. The decision could be challenged but it is yet to be determined if Mr. Obama's administration will pursue the defense of the Food and Drug Administration's original rules and regulations. My link
  22. In Latin and South America, there is a movement that exalts the lowly guinea pig - known as cuy - as a new food source that is also ecologically friendly. Imports of cuy into the United States have grown considerably over the last short time span. My link
