Catholic Bishops in OH Want to End State's Death Penalty
eym_sirius replied to zoocrew's topic in RECENT TOPICS
I think that "hard labor" ought to be offered as an alternative to the death penalty. His choice. Also -- they should do away with work out facilities (?) and gang affiliations. It's hard to be in a "gang" if you don't have freedom of association! The inmates run the prisons. There needs to be significant prison reform. One of them isn't the death penalty, IMO. It's the only bargaining chip in some cases. -
Yes, people have been misspelling it for centuries! As I recall, it's the only word in the English language that ends in -sede. Teaching vocabulary many, many years ago, it seems ( I may just be making this up) that I asked, on a test - "What is the only word in the English language that ends in -sede?" I got two answers back that said, "supercede". You know what's strange? I can remember things from 40 years ago, but I can't remember certain things from a week ago! LLF, do you remember the name of the teacher who taught you that? I'm really bad about remembering names from

How do you spell "Sooper Seed" That's just how it's pronounced.

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious I'll pass on the backwards. I'll have to check to see if I got it.

Spin off from "Christina Aquilera, Super Bowl Performance"

It's a process. The person who thinks that he has worked it all out hasn't challenged himself sufficiently. The one who stops working on his craft - he may be satisfied with himself, but probably nobody else is. A person should be able to look objectively to say -- "Ooooh, that needs work! " And to be equally honest in self-praise - "Now THAT was HOT!" -
I thought that it was funny! "Dressed for a funeral/You killed it" It was good fun!

I'm not so sure that today's performers are true artists. Take Patsy Cline's "Walking After Midnight" or Nat Cole's up-tempo "Route 66" , Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World" - If someone needs a more contemporary song with artistic runs, try Frank Zappa's version of "Whipping Post"! This is artistry! THIS is singing from the soul!! On this canvas the song is painted. On this canvas the artist applies nuance through character and mastery and truth. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bi-dm1JU4no -

Spin off from "Christina Aquilera, Super Bowl Performance"

Unfortunately, what she's saying is that she got so caught up in herself that she forgot the words. When you're busy admiring your own work, looking back, it's difficult to look forward at what comes next. CA just screwed the pooch. I was hoping that it was a technical error, but it was a combination of a mistake in judgment and a lack of artistic rationale for her interpretation of the song. Or maybe she meant, "The Twilight's Last Reaming"! -
I think that it's commendable that she didn't make excuses. I was trying to give her the benefit of the doubt after having blasted her for her self-aggrandizement. Turns out, my first impression of her performance was (unfortunately) the correct one. I was hoping that she wasn't just trying to "diva it up".... "The Twilight's Last Reaming" - Priceless! I stand corrected about my theory DC.

Some Of Us Like To Be Random In Our Thinking

This is your best post ever! -
Professionals know how to channel their nervous energy. CA's performance was SO BAD that it had to have been technical. She didn't get nervous and just decide to free-style those vocal runs! In a big arena like that, there's a really bad echo that comes back on you and is really confusing. Performers nowadays ALL wear these earbuds that allow them to modulate their own voices because they only hear themselves and the music. Nervous energy might have had a part in this, because upon discovering from the beginning that the earbuds weren't working, she might have decided to drown out the ech

I predict that CA will say that her earpiece malfunctioned and that she was getting an echo that was confusing her. And that was why she was singing so loud, so that she couldn't hear the echo.

I think so - that you're wrong to see it this way. Ray Charles spoke to this a long time ago, to the vocal nuances that make performances unique. He said that there are thousands of different ways to sing the same song. Frankly, he never sang the same song the same! That happens when one sings from the heart, what used to be called, "soul". They are singers, so it IS about what they can do with their voices. Here's the disclaimer, though: The AUDIENCE should be the ones to be brought in by the performer's interpretation of the selection. The question is, "Is the performer attempting to -
CA has some major pipes! It was not her best performance, that's true. It's HER worst performance, I think. I've heard worse (Roseanne B. for example), but not from HER. I think RB got all the words right, which may make her version better. And I'd rank RB's performance as comedic, as opposed to serious.

I couldn't make myself watch it again. I tried. I started to watch it and it was SO bad (about 20 seconds into the song) that I didn't want to undergo any future torture. Hey, instead of waterboarding, why don't we make terrorists listen to CA sing the SSB?
-
The performer is a creative artist. I get that. What I don't get is that in this case the purpose is for her to inspire through an established medium - the SSB. I don't require a still life picture of the SSB. a little creativity still inspires and retains the patriotic mood. But this -- This tonight was one of the worst serious performances in recent memory. Off (F.S.) Key.

What do you mean? She who? I was talking about two "shes"

In trying to come up with a comparison, the Roseanne Barr SSB fiasco was the closest. But that was a farce. Ms. Barr used the stage to display her comedic talents and wasn't attempting to sing the SSB with great skill. CA was trying to provide a performance that would become the standard by which every other singer of the song would be judged. It was a serious attempt. But she was so into herself, that she flubbed the words, and absolutely butchered the song. I guess that's the difference with musical performers nowadays. It used to be for the audience. Now -- it's for the ego of the perfo

I appreciate great skills and C.A. has an outstanding voice. But it was one of the truly awful performances of the SSB in recent history. She flubbed the words, oversang, wandered off-pitch, and those absolutely horrible runs - So why did she do it? Self-aggrandizement! It wasn't about the meaning of the song - It was about HER. Maybe it is a proper reflection of the music of her generation! There's no regard for the meaning of the words, but only for the beat of the music and the looks of the person who is out front performing. Next time, I hope that they choose somebody who is not

Postman, please note that this thread is in the Internet Cafe. It's here for a reason - That reason is for people to make comments about the uprising without the comments being inherently political. That's for the political forum. The underlying causes and the residual effects, the possible implications of the political upheaval -- Political Forum Fodder. Here, it's just what do you see from the media snippets? Guys who throw with the same foot forward, no headgear, and as a result, lots of head bandages - stuff like that. Media types like Anderson Cooper claiming to be beaten by "thu -
