  1. You've just got to see this piece. As the parent of a child with disabilities; this is a moving piece of reflection. pubby
  2. Feeling safe is not an instruction nor is it the product of a cost-benefit analysis; it is however based on instincts of community and has little to do with individual self-gratification or especially greed. Here is the way this video begins: It will surprise you:
  3. Whitey: You mean I got 29 percent of the vote!!! - whoopee ... I certainly appreciate the votes I got but you and I know that with NIMBYs like you motivated and united to block progress coupled with the hassle that it is now to vote at all, I think we're lucky we had the paltry turnout we did. And don't think that 'being in the minority' is some kind of serious blow to my ego I'm pretty used to being in the top five percent or so of folks on tests of all kinds. Still, since you seem to have such respect for the majority, maybe you'll jump out in front and yell as the yahoos who
  4. Zorro: I'm sure you understand that when I said the intimidation was palpable in this case, I mean that it was 'real intimidation that people felt.' While you may feel like a tick on the back of a blood hound surrounded by a half-dozen white guys with AKs and bushmasters there are a lot of people who find being in that 'company' is a source of discomfort and intimidation ... Fact is you don't have to be a black guy - or even a nerd to feel 'intimidated' in that company despite the comfort you may feel. The feelings of intimidation may or may not be 'rational' - there were never re
  5. Newsjunky: Think about 1984 - I've read it and I know you have too - but remember the enemy is that amorphous group called the other and the other is always the one that commits atrocities, always does bad and your side always does good and is upright and proper in all it does. That is the narrative and the lie. Because the state controlled all access to news and media and ... what was his name John Winston ... Winston's job in the ministry of information, was to rewrite history - remove allies who became enemies and the like. The innovation of 1984 was its invention of newspeak whic
  6. Thank you NewsJunky, in defining "group think" for us. You have just demonstrated the way conservatives evade the truth in the US today. pubby
  7. Paulding county really didn't need an airport, in part because we have industry (and didn't) that would utilize it like those companies in Cobb (with its 55% business/industrial investment percentage of the county digest - ours being a paltry 16% maybe). But there was a push to have an airport and I don't think it was being pushed locally. Rather the FAA wanted it as an alternative landing area for HJIA in the event of some unknown disaster. (Did you never think that after 911- the twin towers were the financial center of the world) that someone who used aircraft successfully might not a

  9. At one time the idea was that folks were uncomfortable with guns being ubiquitous. This is because often those carrying the weapons on their hip are making a statement. That statement may be, "we work for the big rancher so don't think about carving out a farm and planting things 'cause we don't want you here ... a common unsaid statement in the wild west" to the expression of authority by those on horseback in the sugar cane fields in the Dominican Republic. I recall several here on the right showing how the mere presence of bearded black guys with sun glasses at polling places wa
  10. Paulding.com has a reputation for being a place where conflicting ideas are aired. Some members approach conflict on a purely personal level, others just don't want to be bothered with it and others just are bothered with conflict, regardless of its type. What most people don't realize is that conflict is an essential element for any group to think. What is most destructive of any effort to group think is for a group of bullies to make the outcome to any discussion so predictable as to make it a losing exercise. I'm afraid we're there ... How do I know? Well a crazy in Calif
  11. Hey, I know that you folks want me to ban him because he is a disruptive force who doesn't buy the conservative BS. Actually the way the rules are written your personal attacks against him is the greater offense. If you can't feel that then the part of your brain that perceives empathy is malfunctioning but then exciting these negative feelings are destructive of the site which I can only presume is your real intent. pubby
  12. Their school records would be a pretty good start (both k-12 and college) both or either of which are critical qualifications. pubby
  13. The rules for independent candidates require they collect the signatures during a specific time period ... about 28 days in the heat of July, if memory serves. The total number of qualified signatures is somewhere around 875 but to be sure that number is attained, it is generally conceded you need to collect something like 2000 total. Part of the reason is if, for instance, I sign the petition and I'm registered as George Patton Hughes and I sign as George P. Hughes, even though I'm the same person, the signature doesn't count. It is not designed to be an easy process. pubby
  14. the people we're talking about were children when they came and they grew up here, went to school here and know no other 'home.' While many of you may call them illegals and point they came to the country improperly, the plain fact is that illegality involves criminal intent. Given these men and women came here as children aged from less than a year to ten or twelve years old, the law basically doesn't assign criminal intent to their actions. They were the wards of their parents and as innocent children, they are not responsible for the actions of their parents and literally are victi
  15. The county didn't have $40 million to put into it surepip. To suggest that kind of cash came local taxpayers is as absurd as it is ridiculous. pubby
  16. They are here with visas and they were provided a path to either to citizenship or residence. They were, however, baseball players in the Dominican Republic and were recognized for their talent. When their talent was recognized, people here made the effort to get them the proper documents to come her to live and play baseball. The people covered by the recruiting project were all here legally at this point although their visas may have been just that of a student visa that would require they leave the country when their education is complete. This program allows the military to recr
  17. Actually it was not puffery to assert that foreign nationals have been an integral part of the United States military since revolutionary times. The image of 'illegal immigrants' as being eligible is obviously overstated and the current program, while it expands the pool from just those with legal immigrant/resident status to those here legally under a visa including student visas - particularly with their language skills - would seem to make sense. Extending the pool to non-documented residents - imagine the individual as a high school graduate who has lived here from age three and may
  18. "on the hook for basically everything?" No ... they are on the hook for the expenses that are presumably reimbursed by 90 percent FAA money ... i.e. things like fences and taxiway concrete. In contrast those expenses that are associated with the marketing and daily operations of the facility for both consumers and for those who will bring businesses - expenses that aren't FAA reimbursable - are not on our dime at all. Additionally costs of security and operations of the facility - electricity, etc - are all out of the pocket of the people who have the responsibility to run the airport.
  19. It is a bit of a misconception that this was a sweetheart deal. It was a win-win situation and has been.
  20. Glassdogs: Apparently you didn't read the 'academic' piece that cited, amongst others, the recollections of Tocqueville or the history of puritanism both here and in "Cromwell's" England. Here is another couple of paragraphs which, btw, demonstrate the difference between 'protestant' religion and its 'intolerant' subset: Now Glassdogs ... I know that puritanism is associated with the notion we call the 'protestant' work ethic but while that contribution to the society is noted, it ought not be forgotten folks that shared this belief used to burn people at the stake and drown the
  21. Kind of an interesting movie that is funny. Thought you folks might like to view it. pubby
  22. And from you post I can only surmise, Glassdogs, is that the only issue of any worth, merit, consideration is money and most specifically, how much one has. This comes from the well known puritanical thread in American history that is lodged in the notion that those who are wealthy got to be wealthy because God smiled on them because of their self-discipline and innate godliness. Conversely, those who are poor are poor for a variety of reasons that include lack of discipline and a host of other failings, shortfalls and flaws. This creates a very simple to navigate society where you ne

  25. TP: All that may have been but the point of the video is that youth are programming their minds in different ways than what we did in our time. The understanding comes from cognitive science which has proven that through the miracle of neuroplasticity, our brains are programmed by our surroundings and our interactions with them. This is partly why old folks as a rule are not as adept with the new technology as most youth and why there is a material difference in the brains of those programmed in 1880 and brains programmed in 1980. Let me relate it this way. I had a short stint wo
