Could have been any number of things. From the creepy to the illegal. Or, it could have been a person who does reports to banks and such. People get paid to report what vehicles and animals are at peoples homes. They also do things like insurance inspections to make sure peoples homes are up to code. Hopefully it was something innocent but you did the right thing. I would make sure my doors and cars were locked just to be on the safe side.
