  1. That's awesome, LLF!!! Please come on up this weekend! Or get there really early (interest has been high) to be in the first 10 adoptions! :)

My first riding class starts at 9:00 am so I'll have to come later in the day after classes are done. I adopted a male kitten last year but he didn't like it outside so he stays in the house. lol

  2. I'm not sure but you might want to SNOPES it. I have been getting e-mails with the same content for about 5 years.

I may be wrong but it's worth a look.

The Snopes link was included in the post and it is true.

Consumer Reports also has info on the possible dangers of cocoa mulch to dogs.

  3. I received this information from one of my horse buddies:

Tell and/or fwd to every dog owner (& dog-sitter) you know. Beware when walking dogs or "visiting" where someone might have this in their yard.

Over the weekend the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. They loved the way it smelled, and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden.

Their dog Calypso decided that the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk, half way through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.

Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company's web site, this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats. Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees depending on each individual dog). 'However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it.'

This Snopes site gives the following information: http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/cocoamulch.asp

Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and other Garden supply stores, contains a lethal ingredient called 'Theo bromine'. It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest & gt; this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks. Just a word of caution, check what you are using in your gardens and be aware of what your gardeners are using in your gardens. Theo bromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker's chocolate which is toxic to dogs.

Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, axanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.

  4. For those of us who sometimes feel that there is little we can do to bring about change:

“I am only one, but I am one. I can't do everything, but I can do something. The something I ought to do, I can do. And by the grace of God, I will.”

    Edward Everett Hale

  5. Oscar, the picture is just beautiful. It isn't easy to capture the eye of a horse but you have done a wonderful job. We have 9 horses here at our farm in New Hope. You are welcome to visit anytime. I have an older QH mare and her two daughters that I would love to get a picture of together. It's been difficult to get a really good group photo.
