While I do not disagree with your assessment, given where they escaped from, I would say their bad choices have a lot more to do with mental/emotion issues. I also wouldn't be surprised to find out that alcohol and/or drugs played a role. (and bad choices in the people they hang around with)

One of my best friend's son is a Doctor of Mathematics (or what ever they are called), he has been published many times and is going to Europe soon to give a lecture on whatever it is he does.
