My fishing buddy's wife still does this. Once they are dried she puts them in a huge glass jar and uses them all year to make fried apple pies. My dad was a GA State Patrol up there when I was a kid so I know ALL the backroads. I still stay away from that part of the country until the apples and the leaves are off the trees. We usually wait until the first snow and go Jeeping through the forestry service roads.

I haven't been there during apple season in a while. If you are there, pay attention to those 18 wheelers coming and going. If they come in full and leave empty, it might be tat they are hauling apples in from somewhere else.

I grew up less than a mile from Merciers. There is no way I would drive up there this time of the year. It is hilarious to me that people will drive up there, fight the traffic and the crowds and buy those apples like there will never be another apple and very few (if any) of the apples are grown in Georgia (much less on that orchard).

That's surviving. There is a difference in surviving and living. None for me, thanks. I cut and split my own firewood and use it to provide 85% of the heat for my house in the winter. But I have electric back up and don't hesitate to use it as needed. That's about as close to "living off the grid" as I care to get.
