That I find the RSAnimate series of videos inspiring as well as enlightening is a given. This one on time is particularly relevant to the problem we have in education; particularly educating young men who represent the greatest challenge when it comes to keeping them in school. The observation here, in particular the control of time that a person experiences when playing games, is totally negated in the regimented industrial school setting. If, as folks are beginning to understand through cognitive science, that we actually wire our brains differently than did our parents and our childr

Just VOTED for PROGRESS IN PAULDING!
gpatt0n replied to Concerned Pldg Resident's topic in RECENT TOPICS
I'm not ignorant nor do I have sour grapes (I too would like to sip wine in Tuscany although I never wanted to retire there). I just have my opinion about the direction of the county and the opinions of a few hundred folks either way doesn't sway me. You won the election, congratulations. You'll note that you now have the political membership I promised you for free. You chose not to use it during the election, maybe you will now. pubby -

Mojo: Why do you and Whitey think because a vote involving one-in-seven registered voters in a voting process that was the height of annoyance - I resent anyone demanding to see my DL to do much of anything for the record - I would all of a sudden switch and think that being anti-airport is a good idea? I mean when Ron Reagan won in 1980, I didn't flip and become a Republican; didn't do so in 1984, 88, 2000 or 2004. I would have voted for Winthrop Rockefeller (a Republican) for governor in 1964, 66 or 68 when he faced down the segregationist (and lost in 66 and 68) Orville Faubu -

Whitey: Patti said she ran because with the airport, she couldn't sell the property she inherited from her parents for enough money to let her retire in comfort in Tuscany (Italy), which was her plan. Further she said she didn't expect to win and all but declared her support for Todd when she spoke at the Chamber debate. Whether or not she (or Todd admit it) I believe she was entered in the race to stop my planned candidacy against Todd; something I first found out about in talking to Todd and her at the 'get together' for candidates. According to Mojo, she was also 'active -

It is called linguistics and it has answers for political dissention
gpatt0n replied to publisher1's topic in RECENT TOPICS
You need to go listen to the first video of the bunch ... the 1hr 28 minute piece that is an opening survey of cognitive science. In that piece he doesn't speak to politics at all but rather describes in survey lecture style, the brain as a biologically constructed computer with various memory banks (areas of the brain) that have been tracked electronically and observed to be activated when specific stimuli are introduced. By playing with nuanced inputs - peeling a banana instead of eating one, the similarities are observed and indeed, it was in this way that 'empathy' being a wired response- 21 replies

I've split a couple of topics off this topic as I'd like it to not be debased and diverted. I even set one of the off topic replies invisible. All I can say about this stradial is you are a cunning linguist ... which is amazingly "on topic." pubby- 21 replies

COMMON CORE: WHAT IS THE GOVERNMENT REALLY TRYING TO DO?
gpatt0n replied to lowrider's topic in RECENT TOPICS
The problem, in my mind, is that you're defining the issue as whether or not the federal government ought to be involved in public Education and then suggest somehow the specifics of a relatively small issue is or ought to be the deciding point on that larger, over-arching issue. Frankly, that fits the definition of a straw man argument which means that you're acting like I'm the dummy. I would never suggest that you're stupid. However, I would suggest that you're the one that spinning things. [ pubby -
COMMON CORE: WHAT IS THE GOVERNMENT REALLY TRYING TO DO?

My reluctance in pointing this out is that the members here are not the folks responsible for creating the controversy. The folks who did gin up this controversy know what they did and on its surface, the controversy seems reasonable. What folks here don't know is that the level of spin that goes on and becomes the things we talk about are literally engineered by folks who create the spin for maximum effect to advance their political agenda. The idea that anyone cares about the national common core standards is a reach, in a sense, that is comparable to the outrage that exists becaus -
COMMON CORE: WHAT IS THE GOVERNMENT REALLY TRYING TO DO?

No, you're not resisting change; you're playing politics. Notions of the factory school, which came out of Bismark's approach to education in the late 1800s is an approach that was designed to teach people how to acclimate themselves to a world defined by the industrial revolution. Evolution of that to the 'prison school' with its regimentation and authority structure is another form of reaction to issues that may have included issues related to pollution including forms of lead poisoning. My point is that focusing on common core, which is functionally no different from the highly sim -
COMMON CORE: WHAT IS THE GOVERNMENT REALLY TRYING TO DO?
gpatt0n replied to lowrider's topic in RECENT TOPICS
First, we were considered behind in education going back to the 1950s ... largely in science and mathematics. The state-by-state approach was 100 percent in operation before Dwight Eisenhower, seeing the failure of science education and the demand for engineers/scientists picking up dramatically, signed into law the first federal aid to education. I remember its impact dramatically as, all of a sudden, we had things like language laboratories and the guy who used to be a coach was removed from teaching physics - he was a total idiot and didn't understand the subject at all but hey, he'd b -

Why should I be ashamed: Cmorg, you lowrider, NewsJunky, gog8tors and tundra should be ashamed because you didn't challenge any of the statements; you just talked about how condescending I was to point out that standardization has a long history in this country. It is easy to call someone names but people know that you're just avoiding a substantive discussion of the facts. There are many advantages of standardization but did you even have the ability to raise issues regarding a less rigid approach ... what one could call either the states-rights approach or, maybe because it takes -
COMMON CORE: WHAT IS THE GOVERNMENT REALLY TRYING TO DO?

I beg to differ that there are no facts backing up this understanding. That this was obvious in the 2000s and common core also got its impetus in that latter part of the first decade of the century establishes concurrent timing. The influence of this 'market' for textbooks simply can't be minimized. As our legislator said in his address to the PBA, Georgia has had a set of written standards similar to common core for going on four decades as well. The similarities to the 'national standard' as far as standards are concerned is understood but the point is written standards have been a fea -

I thought I made this post earlier... on another machine but apparently I didn't hit the publish button. Anyway, the speaker in this video, which if you were open-minded at all, you'd view out of basic curiosity, is Jeremy Rifkin, the American who has influenced folks particularly in Germany, to begin working toward a positive vision of a sustainable 21st Century. Here's the bit from the wiki on the specific point he is making in the video: What becomes obvious in this low or zero marginal cost world is that the only way to avoid ever decreasing returns on capital from competi -

Uncle will claw back that airport and give it to anyone who will run it as such if we tried to do those things. Fact is, they'd probably be over-joyed to give it to a particular entity that has about 9700 acres south, east and west of the current facility. This kind of talk sounds like that briar rabbit; you know asking please, please, please don't throw us in that briar patch when you really do want to give the airport back so it can become the second Atlanta airport - because anyone with any sense knows that is the likely future of the facility if we give it up - not a drag strip.

COMMON CORE: WHAT IS THE GOVERNMENT REALLY TRYING TO DO?
gpatt0n replied to lowrider's topic in RECENT TOPICS
The central part of the conflict is whether the state of Texas, which is one of the largest school systems in the nation, is writing the textbooks for the balance of the country or not. The impetus for the change is that in recent years the Texas state school board, which elects its members to office, has been taken over by religious fundamentalists who have wanted to teach creationism over evolution in the science class as well as forcing other culturally charged elements into the text books that are sold nationwide. Common core, which is generating its own curriculum (apart from the
