My family has started moving towards a more prepared state. While we have a long way to go, we do have a decent amount of food, but probably not more than 30 days of water. We are also lacking communications equipment and self defense. All in time - though I would certainly like to be there sooner rather than later. I think if we had to, and it was just a matter or no fuel for a limited time, we'd do okay...but, if we start talking total financial collapse...we're screwed.

TMZ reports "Elmo" in trouble
dumbestgirlintheworld replied to mimosaflower's topic in RECENT TOPICS
Awesome. Now Elmo is a pedo. This planet sucks. -
First, don't presume that from my posts here that you know all of my beliefs. I grew up on welfare, welfare that my mother desperately needed. Welfare that she was ashamed to take, cried in line receiving and used as TEMPORARY assistance as designed. I truly think that experience shaped me as a person and I can't begin to tell you how much respect I have for my mother as a result. As for disability, I can't pretend to have been there, but I do empathize. One of the biggest issues I have is that people that want to coddle the disabled have no idea how much not contributing to society can h

Can you lay down and take calls on a headset? If so, there's WFH opportunities to do customer service. With all due respect, If Stephen Hawkings can still be teaching, there's somethgn out there.

So, they can't sit and they can't stand? I assume all they can do is lay down? Disability. There's no other option, is there. But, you better believe that you should be having your mama turn you over every hour to make sure you're not getting bedsores if this is the case. I have to think that someone has the ability to contribute somehow...now, that said, the government will likely make it easier and more profitable for you to stay home and eat cheetos.

Have you ever been to Europe?

Christian religious symbols are there for archeological reasons, generally speaking, no religious ones. Churches have been turned into all kinds of things, from concert halls in the US (Tabby, anyone!) to brothels in Africa. Not that it really matter, church is where ever two or more are gathered, but it does make you scratch your head. And yes, I'm uneasy here too - but I really don't want to be beat unrecognizably by a bike lock or bunch of batteries in a sweat sock over an iPhone. Typically speaking, thugs here aren't going to mess with that much for fear you may have a gun to protect -
No. Believe it or not, the cost of living - in side by side comparison - isn't that much more at all. Slightly higher taxes, but no healthcare costs - which accounted for $25K for me this year. Since most people can't afford to purchase a home (a minimum down payment required is 25% with an average home in the London outskirts going for about £300K or $550K), the government offers supplemented housing for many. Very similar to rent control in NYC. You don't need a car, you certainly don't need 2 cars. I could go on and on, but there's a lot of misinfo out there. Pubby, we believe that our

This is very true. One of the most compelling reasons in my decision to move will be the drastic increase in my earning potential. But, maybe more so than the ubber wealthy moving to Spain or the Cook Islands, is the amount of manufacturing jobs being sent to countries with more attractive incentives for businesses and less tax burden.

Dear God - I think I'd rather play the repeat game with my 10 year old than indulge your circular conversations. God back and READ my statements, you half-wit, and quit looking for trouble where there is none. -
No. I supply all of our benefits.

Have you ever been to Europe?

Islamists are the greatest threat to Christianity. I am a Christian. The proliferation of Islam is of concern. Without a doubt. This is certainly not to call them an enemy, not of mine. I respect them and their religion. Whether you like it or not, my tolerance for their religious beliefs is much greater than their tolerance of mine. And that saddens me. America has allowed Muslims to increase their religious houses on American land by 75%. Can you show me one Islamic country where this has happened in reverse? Is that because of intolerance or that Islam is just a better religion? Is -

Yes, agreed. Very pretty. And it's much like telling someone wishing to immigrate to the US to go and visit yellowstone or Santa Barbara - which isn't a realistic view of american life and culture...at all. -
Have you ever been to Europe?

It is very accurate. The numbers support it. England is currently one of the largest safe harbors for terrorists in the world. Why? Because they choose to keep their enemies close. Can you blame them? They are letting mega-mosques go up on every corner and giving aid in the form of social services to every Arab with a taxi cab company. If you don't believe it, you just need to spend some time in Slough or East London or Manchester or Birmingham. It's good for the image of the country. -
Have you ever been to Europe?

My husband is from the Homeland - England. We spend a lot of time there, as all of his family is still abroad. There's certainly pluses, and plenty of minuses. I hate that we can't walk down a street because of the thugs that populate much of the area - waiting to rob you for a stupid phone. I also hate watching our sister in law die, slowly and painfully, of cancer - much of that due to the difficulty in appointments and access to alternative care. Counsel housing estates make me sad, but it's really the only option for a third or more of the population. Parents try their best to save th -

That was a big JUMP to conclusions. I never made any such claims. Just merely asked, how do you like the changes? -
Ha! This is laughable at best. If you think that UI insurance manipulation is going to cease, you've never been on unemployment. I spent a year on it not too long ago...The system is over-burdened. Your wife had an employer that had a grudge to serve. Sorry for that. But, for the average American, the hurdles to UI are few... Getting your card punched? All you have to do is print off the "thank you for applying for this job" page on the internet 10 times and a week and you've got your check.

Even if you haven't, the landscape is beginning to look much like our own: Churches are closing at a rate of 4,000 per year. The attendance rate for church is less than 20%. Mosques have increased by 75% since 2005. Drugs are now legal in 2 states and medicinally available in many more. The US now has socialized healthcare. So, of those of you that have spent time in Europe, are you happy about these changes in America?

Actually, he does have some potential with this employer, but not much. They are a small company, less than 10 employees. Quite frankly, the landscape of corporate America is such that there is no loyalty on the part of an employer - and therefore there is lessening loyalty on the part of the employee. We probably won't take this route, not because we shouldn't or can't, but because my husband is moral and doesn't want to be a bum on the system. I'm still working on him, though... The purpose of my story was to illustrate the ease of use of the system and the overall lack of a compell

We'll agree to disagree on this, but I know FOR FACT that getting unemployment is easier than getting a parking ticket.
-
And he's in sales, people get fired all.the.time. for missing quota and they go on benefits.
-
This is not true. Quitting COULD, but is unlikely, especially if you quit due to bad working environment or the inability to make commissionable wages as promised.
-
So, here's a question - simple enough. How do you cheat the system? Right now, my husband is making $50K per year. This, after taxes, is about $2800/month. Our nanny is $1500/month. Our son's after school is $600/month. We're netting about $700/month for him to keep working. Now, why shouldn't he stop performing, get fired and go on unemployment? We would actually make more money if he did, since we would no longer have the child care costs. He would bring home $1300 instead of $700 in monthly wages. Not to mention, we would also have the tax benefit of a head of household with a

This is completely fair and completely true. The real question is what will be the options for those of us that don't want to throw in the towel and go on food stamps and welfare? The silver lining may mean that we tighten the boot straps and move into the mega-rich territory.

Game over: what now?

Great. Appreciate the additional bloviating. Do you know when Congress meets again? When will they decide on the tax cuts? From all I've heard, we'll go off the cliff in January, but they will meet soon after to do a retro-active "rebate" again? Can anyone confirm?
