  1. Is it over yet?

Please tell me the Cowboys are winning? :)

Any time the Cowboys lose, it makes my day!

Coach Wade Phillips? What a joke.

    Romo? ditto!

T.O. -------You gotta love it when butterfingers (Terrell Owens) drops the ball.....then he gets all mouthy when Romo doesn't throw his way. T.O. whines and pouts like a baby...... They ought to trade him to Oakland, then he and MeAngelo Hall could both show out in front of the cameras.

  2. I've been listening to Clark Howard, Dave Ramsey and reading commentaries of those guys at Bloomberg & Barron's who say NOW is the best time to buy stocks and mutual funds. They are all convinced the market will rebound soon.

My mutual funds have all lost out the wazoo the last few months, but I took a gamble and took 3/4 of my bonds and cash reserves and put it into more mutual funds. I suppose my question is are folks around here buying, selling, or simply holding on to what's left?

  3. It is sad, but not limited to school size. In band competiton East always has one of the largest bands. However, HUGE schools like Parkview and Mill Creek have VERy small bands. As a matter of fact Etowah's band was very small last night as well. The sizes will return and we have one of the best band programs (Paulding as a whole) of any county in Metro Atlanta! Our bands are aweasome!!

Also, with the economy slowing down, many parents don't seem to be interested in spending the extra cash right now to put kids in band. Band and color guard are really expensive.... even with fundraisers and stuff, it costs over $600 per kid on the field to perform the show. All this must come from band fees and of course fundraisers.

There are a LOT of families really struggling right now and I almost look for this downturn in the economy to continue for the next couple of years. As seniors graduate, fewer freshmen are coming up from the middle schools to fill the empty slots. I really support the band and many studies have shown that kids in band have a higher grade point average than those not in the band.

With that being said, when a band kid bugs you about buying candy, cookie dough, cokes and discount cards, please please pull out you wallet and support the band. Every single dollar raised helps out the student (and the parent).

  4. What is the deal with the 2 slip and slide looking things on the field during your show?

I've seen your show twice now and I'm just curious.

    Nice show tonight...by the way.

The PCHS band has shrunk from 120 members a couple years ago to only 48 for this year. Some of that is probably due to the new schools opening (South Paulding & North Paulding). The slip & slide tarp thingys apparently make the field shrink and makes our band "look" bigger.

  5. I went to little bear this morning across from Dallas Elementary School. The pumps were really slow and there was a $25.00 limit.

................Just called...... they're now out of gas

  6. You really need to "man up" and take charge.

The stuff about ADHD & ADD is pure hogwash. You may not want to hear it, but an old fashioned beatdown will straighten out a bad attitude. It works, believe me it works. Been there, done that.

All the folks that don't believe in whipping an unruly kid are not doing that kid any favors.

Remember.... spare the rod, spoil the child?

You need to quit relying on the police for discipline and trying to scare little Johnny into behaving. Little Johnny doesn't need to fear the police, he needs to fear YOU!

I'd rather spend a night in jail than attending a kids funeral. If you don't literally beat the fool out of that kid now, you'll be burying him later.

  7. Many people have worked years for a company only to find theirselves out of a job when a CEO or Senior VP ships there jobs overseas in effort to increase profit. Sad thing is most VP's only stay with a company for a short period of time. Drive up the stock price anyway they can. Cash out those stock options and go to the next company. The worker who has devoted his blood, sweat and tears to grow the company is left behind.

Can you blame the CEO? he is doing his job. The shareholders demand.a return of profit on their investments.

The whole system is screwed up in my opinion.

Do I have a solution? Look out for yourself because noone else will.

Excellent post. The executives could care less about the working class, they're only interested in making profits and returning dividends to the shareholders. Most folks who get wealthy don't work for big companies, instead they open a business of their own and can see firsthand the fruits of their labor.

  8. Most Americans work hard for what they have and live within their means, then there is the other sections, that want what they want and with loans they could not pay for got what they wanted without working for it, it pisses me off that my tax dollars will have to pay for this. So my question is how do you stop greed in America? If all these finicial institutions are bailed out will it solve anything?

Since when is it my responsibility as a taxpayor to bail out someone else who made a foolish investment decision? I mean if you invest in a bank stock and the bank goes broke, you lose. That's why financial planners tell you to never put all your eggs in one basket. They advise you to diversify your investments across many sectors and many companies of various sizes. I agree that many folks are so far in debt because they're living above their means. Why should my taxes go up to help out those who made foolish financial decisions? The government's answer seems to always stick it to the working class taxpayers.

This economic mess will have a political impact on the fall elections as well.

  9. I grew up in Smyrna, Does anyone remember when Robin Wooten & Randy Kline were involved in the bad crash on South Cobb Drive when their sports car hit a chevette? around 1978 or 79, I can't remember exactly when? Rumor had it they were in a camaro or trans am racing against road runner. The camaro lost control and hit a chevette with 4 people inside. 3 were killed in the chevette and a total of 5 people were killed (Robin & Randy died that night too)....

My father was so shaken by this crash that he took our whole family to the towing service yard and let us see firsthand what speeding can do....

I'll never forget it, my sister was close to Robin and my sister cried for days.

Citing a $115 million gap in its employee pension fund, Cobb County told workers late Thursday that it wants to alter its pension formula to increase employee contributions and reduce some benefits, among other changes.

With about $349 million in assets and about $578 million in obligations, the plan is under-funded by about 40 percent, one of the worst ratios in the metro area. To meet acceptable standards, it must cut that rate to 20 percent, bringing assets up to about $464 million.

    • Cobb County news The county plan covers more than 4,000 workers and about 1,300 retirees. Its funding rate of 60 percent is one of the worst in the metro area, rivaling the Atlanta General Employees fund and the Clayton County pension fund.

A nearly 4 percent loss on investments in the first seven months of the year and poor performance for three years at the start of the decade, more retirees leaving at an earlier age than anticipated, higher salaries that lead to bigger retirement packages and a longer lifespan for retirees are among factors forcing the changes, said Virgil Moon, the county’s director of support services and pension board chairman.

The industry standard for public employee pensions is a funding rate of 80 percent. Moon said the changes will put Cobb on a track to reach that in 20 years. Accounting standards for governments allow 30 years, he said.

One major change for all employees is a recommendation to stop crediting overtime pay toward retirement. It drew an immediate bark from the Fraternal Order of Police.

“These employees who are one or two years out of retirement, it’s going to affect them,” said Jorge Mestre, state FOP trustees chairman.

As proposed, some of the changes would begin next year while others would be phased in through 2012.

The measure goes before the County Commission for a vote on Tuesday.

  11. They can't.

    It's about control.

They want to convince you =their= interpretation is that no one should drink. So if they can't convince you to voluntarily stop drinking, they want to vote that into the civil code & impose their religious views via Caesar's Sword.

And they would, if possible, outlaw the Devil's Brew (in their mind) every day of the week.

Never mind that they will drink the NyQuil when they are sick. Never mind that X drank wine -every- day, even went to some pretty wild parties where there was lots & lots & lots of drinking, & the Pharisees even got ticked off about his going to the party where there was drinking going on.

They would prohibit X from buying a bottle of Merlot to go with the Last Supper if it happened to be on Sunday ...

TBAR... . You act all knowlegeable about the scriptures, but the truth is that it's YOU who has been blinded. The Bible over and over clearly condemns drunkeness... further, you refer to our Lord and Savior as an "X"...? are you ashamed to confess his holy name before men? if so, he'll be ashamed to confess you before our Father in heaven.

You might want to move up to the Front row next Sunday so you hear a little clearer. You are a lion in sheep's clothing.

  12. I'm not sure how we got off topic, but the issue is beer, wine & liquor sales on Sunday. Some folks think Georgia's blue laws are old fashioned, and that's fine, that's their opinion, but I believe alcohol kills..... and you would too if it was YOUR family member lying in a graveyard through no fault of their own because some good ol' boy got boozed up and decided he's man enough to drive drunk!. It would be just fine with me if all of Georgia was DRY. Not because of religion, but because nothing good ever comes out of someone getting drunk. Sure the government gets huge amounts of alcohol excise tax money, but when is giving Uncle Sam more money a good thing?

Sounds like I'm being out-voted. We'll see if there are enough church folks at the polls in November to say No, but if it passes, how many of you will change your tune when the police knock on your front door saying your teenager was killed by a drunk driver?

  13. And the reason so many oppose alcohol? It can be abused. People get messed up on it. They get hooked on it. They can do something really stupid when on it.

The businessman makes huge profits, yet homes get wrecked because of alcohol. The businessman and the politicians don't care, yet the family who loses a child to a drunk is just well they're just some religious bigot who's trying to tell others how to live? Blah blah blah

Yet PC wants even more booze available for folks to get abused, messed up, hooked?

You'd think folks would wake up and say enough is enough.

Well, I might get out-voted, but I'm voting NO to Sunday alcohol. And by the way TBAR, Peter, Paul, Moses etc. weren't "characters"

  14. I will be voting yes cause you can't stop it you can only hope to contain it and the county knows it is missing out on money every Sunday.. I will be truly surprised if it doesn't pass..

Somehow this does boil down to money.... do you really think the commissioners need more tax money to blow? That's the logic, I mean more booze sold means more alcohol excise tax given to the local politicians...

Alcohol kills! Yet you want even more alcohol to be available?

  15. It is my understanding the Board of Commissioners will let the voters decide in November whether or not restaurants can sell beer, wine & liquor on Sunday.

Have there been any posts on this?

I don't drink and I don't personally think it's a good idea to have booze available on Sunday. In fact, nothing good ever comes out of folks getting boozed up and driving.

I'm very concerned about this .... In 1989, I had a family member killed by a drunk driver.

Thank goodness Jerry Shearin got voted out, maybe David Austin can step in and fix the mess Jerry's created.

    VOTE NO TO SUNDAY ALCOHOL!

  16. The Patriots got whipped last night and the offense looked totaly confused. They are undersized and slow as Christmas..... But at least they show a little couth and class.....if I recall, East Paulding stunk for about 15 years.... Hopefully Paulding County can work on their weaknesses and maybe win a couple of games.

  17. PC lost to Pepperell. Any other updates?

The Patriots offensive line looked undersized to me, and our quarterback got knocked around.... I didn't really think the defense was too bad. A few missed tackles, but I thought the defense was at least trying to play some football. The offense looked scared. Maybe it was 1st game jitters, but if our offense can't step it up, it will be a rough season for PCHS....
