  1. I ran some tap water into a glass a while ago and it was opaque! After a few seconds it began clearing from the bottom up. It also smells like a chemical. Has anyone else noticed this?

  2. I just wanted to share this:

My nephew and his roommate at Camp Lejeune were home this weekend for the Homecoming dance at Sequoyah HS. They will be going to Iraq in January and my nephew wanted to take his girl to this dance because he won't be here for her prom.

They got his roommate a date and were going all out for dinner and wearing their dress blues. He looks so handsome! They went out to dinner first and when they asked for the check, the waitress told them that the couple with 2 children sitting near them had already paid for their dinner. $91! They were blown away. They really believe now that some people appreciate what they are about to do for our country.

I don't know who those people were, but thank you so much.

On the same note, I have a bumper sticker that says "Marine Aunt" on my car. A week or so ago, a motorcycle pulled alongside of me and the man blew his horn and gave me a thumbs-up! He was flying a small flag on his bike and looked to be Vietnam age. Thanks for the wave, sir.

  3. The Stranger

A few years after I was born, my Dad met a stranger who was new to our small town. From the beginning, Dad was fascinated with this enchanting newcomer and soon invited him to live with our family. The stranger was quickly accepted and was around from then on.

As I grew up, I never questioned his place in my family. In my young mind, he had a special niche. My parents were complementary instructors: Mom taught me good from evil, and Dad taught me to obey. But the stranger...he was our storyteller. He would keep us spellbound for hours on end with adventures, mysteries and comedies.

If I wanted to know anything about politics, history or science, he always knew the answers about the past, understood the present and even seemed able to predict the future! He took my family to the first major league ballgame. He made me laugh, and he made me cry. The stranger never stopped talking, but Dad didn't seem to mind.

Sometimes, Mom would get up quietly while the rest of us were shushing each other to listen to what he had to say, and she would go to the kitchen for peace and quiet. (I wonder now if she ever prayed for the stranger to leave.)

Dad ruled our household with certain moral convictions, but the stranger never felt obligated to honor them. Profanity, for example, was not allowed in our home... Not from us, our friends or any visitors. Our longtime visitor, however, got away with four-letter words that burned my ears and made my dad squirm and my mother blush.

My Dad didn't permit the liberal use of alcohol. But the stranger encouraged us to try it on a regular basis. He made cigarettes look cool, cigars manly and pipes distinguished. He talked freely (much too freely!) about sex. His comments were some times blatant, sometimes suggestive, and generally embarrassing.

I now know that my early concepts about relationships were influenced strongly by the stranger. Time after time, he opposed the values of my parents, yet he was seldom rebuked...And NEVER asked to leave.

More than fifty years have passed since the stranger moved in with our family. He has blended right in and is not nearly as fascinating as he was at first. Still, if you could walk into my parents' den today, you would still find him sitting over in his corner, waiting for someone to listen to him talk and watch him draw his pictures. His name?...

    We just call him, "TV."

He has a younger sister now. We call her "Computer."

  4. I think that there is a difference between things the BOE is responsible for, or in charge of, and things they are required to do. Transportation is not an issue. ASP will go because of space.

SACS will require that new schools be built after a certain period of time if the schools go on double sessions due to overcrowding. Otherwise, the system will lose accreditation. The BOE will not allow that to happen.

  5. ACC, I've used your company twice and will continue to do so. I like to donate, when I can, anonymously and don't appreciate others "keeping" score of our giving.

Those are people with small minds and hearts who are making trouble!

  6. My brother came down from Woodstock last Sunday and I met him at Rodney's for lunch. It was delish! I love their coleslaw because it is not sweet. The pork was excellent, lean and tender. We were served quickly.

After lunch, we went back to my house to visit and when he left, he phoned in an order for brunswick stew and coleslaw to take home for lunches this week.

    Yes, it was good!!!

  7. post-1388-1156514627_thumb.jpgThis is Sassy. She was a rescue right off the street. Her family threw her out as a kitten when she scared their big dog. Thus her name, Sassy!

She's twice Sugar's size but doesn't bully her. In fact, Sugar does most of the bullying. They are mostly tolerating each other right now.
