  1. My sons, who are now 22 and 28, had some fine motor delays when they were young and handwriting was a particular problem for them. They were small for their age and that probably contributed to the difficulties they had. My youngest son had the most trouble and I remember seeing him cry while practicing his writing in the primary grades. As a teacher myself I was frustrated. I met with the teacher and some others at his school and we decided that he should begin typing his work so that it would be legible. He was delighted with the suggestion and learned the keyboard quickly. He now types at lightnng speed. He, too, was a great reader and I would never have held him back due to handwriting any more than I would hold a child back who failed a P.E. test!

I assume that there is no problem with his creative writing. When we say "writing" so many people think of that rather than handwriting. It sounded like you were describing the fine-motor difficulties that young children often have. That is what we in education see as a "maturation" problem that will be overcome as the child gets older. Keep working with him but don't make it so much of an issue that he gets frustrated. Hopefully, the testing that was done will tell you if there is a disability or just a developmental delay. Incidentally, most school systems try to avoid testing children in the primary grades so that the child has a chance to grow and mature. A lot of children simply "outgrow" a lot of their early difficulties.

    Good luck!
