If the owners get the dog back they can also get the puppies, but they will be STRONGLY encouraged to turn them over to AC and then, FIX the dog (PHS will do it for free if needed). If it is surrendered and vicious, it will be euthanized. I know it seems that AC should be able to MAKE the owner do what is right, but we have come a long way (fighting every inch of that way) in getting the ordinances we have now passed to make the owner do the right thing. There is still the fact that the law says a pet is property and you cannot take someone's property....but you can make it harder t

Those fines increase greatly with each incident and a proper secure enclosure is not cheap either. This is a way of handling situations such as this as you cannot just 'take' someone's property, but with enough regulations, maybe they will be convinced to surrender that pet to the county. Sorry for your situation, LL, but glad your child is going to be ok.

It is not up to Animal Control. The dog can be deemed 'vicious' under the current county laws and this is probably the option that will be taken. If so, they will still be able to get it back with strict pen regulations. They will also be issued several high dollar tickets for unregistered breeding, leash law, lack of rabies, etc. All of these will hopefully deter them from wanting or being able to get the dog back.

yep! yep, again! Twisted and turned into something it wasn't. -
Thanks! Will check and get back with you on that FBC! MrsJR, no one hear had ever heard of it before either...not even the State vet. From what I've been told, there have been outbreaks in New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Miami-Dade twice....now little Paulding County?! They will probably never know where it came from, but it only took one dog bringing it in. Paulding vaccinates every pet that comes in for distemper, previously the greatest threat. Hopefully there will soon be a vaccine available for this (affordable.) They are really digging for answers.

The person's reasons for calling the State had nothing to do with concern for the pets, only their own agenda. The Shelter had already "shut down" dog adoptions themselves and tests were already being conducted. It would remain closed, State or no State order, until answers were found. There was no secret being kept. The Shelter had already stopped adoptions and notice was clearly posted as to why. It became apparent that something unusual was going on when the deaths continued and the State would have been notified at that time. Again, the person contacting the S
