  1. Not a great situation but it could be worse. pardon.gif

Do you live close enough to any fast food place, restaurant or retail store to be able to walk to work? My son in law had been looking for a job since last December and finally got a job in August. It is within walking distance of his house. They don't have a car, so he pretty much had to get a job close enough to walk to it.

And if you do get a job that you can walk to, be sure to carry PEPPER SPRAY with you. My daughter who does a lot of walking doesn't leave home without pepper spray now. Only 'cause she can't get a carry permit and firearm...yet. wink.gif

Get training for something. Some short term training course that would put you in a job in a few months would be a good start. Consider H&R Block. And no, you don't have to be a math whiz to do taxes (I'm living proof of that).

Yeah those would be perfect if i had my own vehicle, sadly i am 20 years old, still at my moms and she owns a tahoe so it eats up gas, i am in the worst situation possible...

  2. Love machine shops.

Tell him you know where he can buy some machine shop equipment if he's interested. Then let me know. We have some for sale since hubby had to give it up.

Oh, and one more thing yall....I am taking in 4-wheelers, especially since deer season is almost here. Tell your friends. Our repairs include many other things besides mowers, such as log splitters, pressure washers, go-karts, generators, etc. Basically anything with a gasoline engine on it that doesn't exceed 30 HP in size, we fix it. I am also working out a deal with a machine shop next to my shop for specialty items and custom parts fabrication. :)

  3. You sound more and more like the way things used to be over there. Always had a checkers game going on and always had beer in the fridge. Now, if you tell me you plan on a killer New Year's party that starts on December 17 and runs through January 2, I will know that it IS the area.

Thanks! Now listen, you folks are always welcome to just drop by and check it out, and just shoot the breeze with me if you want. I'm going for that "Walley's Gas Station" feel like a nice quaint little shop where people come for repairs or to just say hi. But you never know...you may find something you like that's for sale. We've got a lot of rebuilt stuff for low prices. In fact, I've slashed priced left and right just to clear the shop out. ;)

I even thought about setting up a litle table outside with a checker board for the older folks who just want to pass the time. I would also like to get a Coke machine in there and just fill it up with beer. (Just kidding...I've got a beer fridge at home, thank you very much!) :p

  4. I think I remember Mr Brown. At least the name rings a bell. Many, many mornings it was 1 or 2 hours after we opened before my husband could do the first bit of work because the "neighbors" would stop in to talk. Even some from over on Pierce Road would come by from time to time.

We were in the beige building, where Pit Stop is (actually next door to Pit Stop). Saw so many changes in that area. And you are RIGHT on the new road, too! :good:

I am soooo excited for you! I love seeing people do good, especially good people doing good.

Actually, I loved working from home, but now I realize that my house wreaked a lot from gas. I reckon I had just gotten used to it. Pretty soon I'll be able to use my garage for my CAR!!!

The man who owns the property the shop is on is Pete Brown. Apparently he is well known around Paulding, and might I say he is one of the NICEST elderly men I have met in a long time. Some mornings we'll stand around and chew the fat for up to a half hour. He's very happy about the highway coming in and the business it will generate, as I am also. :)

I am very stoked about it all, but I also understand that the off season will be tough, as it always is. I am working on getting some commerce account for tree service companies, and others who specialize in winter and cold weather services. There's a lot more out there than you would think when you look into it....lots of different kinds of equipment, but still using the same engines I repair daily. I have to work every angle I can to survive the cold season. In fact, I was up till after 3 a.m. last night digging into other types of machines that are used primarily in colder weather. I have also thought about offering log splitting services and things like that this fall and winter, as an example of where I'm taking this.

  5. Yes, Monster and Career Builder both need maps. I've been searching within 20 miles of Powder Springs and got back jobs in Savannah. And even out of state!

Ironically, after I responded to this post I received a call back from one job for which I had submitted my resume after seeing the post on the DOL website. I have an interview scheduled for tomorrow but I'm going to cancel since I won't be in this area after a few months (I HOPE!). It is the second closest interview to my house, too. That sucks!

I've sent my resume to Wellstar MANY times for several different jobs. Some will send the email "thank you for your interest but you do not match our criteria" and have gotten several "we have received your resume and it has been forwarded to the appropriate recruiter for review" and NOTHING since. The first good email from them was 6 weeks ago and I haven't gotten a single email or phone call on that position. I wish I had a name or phone number to call and ask what is taking so long. I've applied through Tanner's website and actually interviewed with their HR person and office manager of one office, with the reply of hearing within two weeks, only to find out through their website that "another candidate is being considered" for EVERY job I've put in for, whether I got the interview or not. I check Kaiser regularly but the only LPN is a part-time float pool in Glen Lake which doesn't fit my needs. I'm searching Craigslist daily and that's hit and miss because you don't know the company for which you're applying. Monster.com needs a map because I'll put in search parameters of 20 miles from Hiram and get postings for Stone Mountain and Newnan. Um, no. It's frustrating. I'll check the Douglas county thing. Thanks for that tip!

  6. I found the bigger boards, like ajcjobs.com, Monster, CareerBuilder to be virtually useless unless you're looking for a job in Alpharetta, Lawrenceville or points east. If you're looking in the western suburbs of Atlanta, don't bother with any of those three sites. There is another one someone recommended--snagajob, I think--that is useless unless you're looking for a job in the restaurant business.

I know a lot of people are afraid of Craigslist job listings but as long as you are particular about which ones you respond to, that is a GREAT resource for jobs. Really. Just avoid those that don't list a location, that say "nationwide", says it pays contract wages, etc. If you get a response back that says "I say let's give it a go", run like he**. ALWAYS do a Google search for the name of the company that responds back and do a map search for the location.

For a medical office, I'm sure you have checked at Wellstar. I check their job listings every couple of weeks myself.

I like the Douglas County Chamber site (formerly Douglasjobs.com) and the Marietta Daily Journal. I haven't had ANY luck with the Department of Labor other than a few times getting a response back that I meet the employers criteria but then I never hear from the employer about an interview. Craigslist is my favorite job search site. I scan the front job page and then search by city. I was searching by job description or job title and was getting stuff from as far away as Augusta, so I switched to searching by city.

Me, too. I'm a LPN looking for a medical office. :)

I'm on ajcjobs.com (which seems to be a more local search for Monster.com), careerbuilder.com, craigslist.com (they have a job posting board), and I check the bigger sites directly every day. It gets kinda redundant because a lot will be posted to multiple websites. Good luck!

  7. We love MeTV, RTV (Retro TV), This, Moxie, Bounce, My Family TV, Antenna TV.

They show "Gunsmoke", "Bonanza", "Big Valley", "Emergency", "Twilight Zone", "Night Gallery", "Cheers". That's just to name a few! My daughter has always loved Sanford and Son and The Jeffersons and she can watch these.

I bet 90% of the time our TV is on it is tuned to MeTV. Definitely our favorite!

Haven't seen Bronson yet. At least not THAT Bronson. :pardon:

  8. http://news.yahoo.com/tax-penalty-hit-nearly-6m-uninsured-people-194442599.html

Nearly 6 million Americans — significantly more than first estimated— will face a tax penalty under President Barack Obama's health overhaul for not getting insurance, congressional analysts said Wednesday. Most would be in the middle class.

And the budget office analysis found that nearly 80 percent of those who'll face the penalty would be making up to or less than five times the federal poverty level. Currently that would work out to $55,850 or less for an individual and $115,250 or less for a family of four.

Average penalty: about $1,200 in 2016.

Health insurance is expensive, with employer-provided family coverage averaging nearly $15,800 a year for a family and $4,300 for a single plan.

So, pay a penalty of on average $1,200 or buy health insurance costing $1,300 a month? Which would you do? I mean, very likely you're going to be able to receive treatment if you don't have insurance, right?

  9. Geez. You're asking me which camera I got. I have no clue. OK, it is the Fujifilm FinePix.

I'll be by on Friday, so if there is still one that will fit it, I'll get it. If not, it will be like my other camera and not have a case. :pardon:

No phone case......I don't know which camera you got but we do have some cases!!!

  10. When I did MT at home I knew a lot of the service owners in this area. The work was either feast or famine, because I was a PRN worker. I worked for one lady who was NOT an MT. Didn't know her carpal from her metatarsal. Needless to say after her third correction of my "mistake" which was NOT a mistake but correcting HER mistake, I took back her equipment and told her I wasn't doing MT any longer.

I checked into a lot of those work at home companies, too. None seemed right for me either. I hate answering the phone, hate making phone calls and have enough problems resolving my own issues.

Thanks guys I will check those out. When I state work from home isn't consistent is because I use to work from home so I know how it's like. Been with Alpine Access, Info.com (just ended,) medical answering service, Paramed, and a whole bunch others. Takes time just to find the right one. Apple work at home says I don't have enough tech support experience, and I do NOT want to invest in Arise or there SVC or whatever you call it.

But thank you again I'm going to check out the BP gas station and the kids consignment shop. Hope something comes through soon, cause I'm out of jewelries to sale!

  12. You're also over 35, am I correct? It's tougher for those who aren't 20-something.

I went for one interview and I swear to God that the minute he saw I wasn't young he couldn't get the interview over with quick enough. But I've heard since that the guy is a real jerk, so it now doesn't surprise me.

I can't even get a job doing what I was doing. How sad is that? I interviewed, one of about 30, but they picked someone who was younger than some of the clothes in my closet.

Thing should start to change around the end of the year. Hope you can hang on that long!

Since I got layoff in July, I've been searching for a job and it seems like no one is hiring and if they are it sure is taking them forever to contact me. I've applied at Costco, 5 locations; none are hiring and said they will in a few months for seasonal workers. Well I can't wait that long. Walgreen across the street from QT isn't hiring or CVS. I applied at the dental place near Walmart on Dallas HWY but I guess my years of experience as a dental assistant/receptionist wasn't good enough and I even went in person. Applied at Wellstar with no luck, heck I even applied for the lowest position housekeeping there and still nothing. I've applied at Northside, Grady, Quest Diagnostic, Cryolife, staffing agencies (their no help), and going to Party City Monday, heard they are hiring. I've revised my resume 3 times. I know it's not my resume because I've applied to Virginia job ads and I get at least 5 employers calling me from their a week. So it must be something with Georgia's employers.

I'm not even being picky with my job search and still landed nothing. I go to interviews and have to compete with at least 15-20 other applicants. The job market sure is struggling but if anyone knows anywhere please let me know. My bills are piling high and making end met is hard. I have over 15-years in customer service, 7-years office administration, 5-years patient service representative, operator, switchboard, medical transcription, and 3-years sterilization surgical and dental tech. Work from home jobs are not stable so I do not want to go that route.

    Thanks!
