  1. Hey ya'll! I am tired of paying close to $60 a month for a phone I rarely use. I do not need any long distance service because I use my cell for all that. I've looked into some of the cheap companies such as Talk America and Z-Tel. I want to see if anyone uses those services or any other cheap ones before I lock into switching... Any suggestions?

We use Lecstar through Cobb EMC. We got the package that has everything--Caller ID, three way calling, everything. Including fees it is $47.77 a month. The fees add up to quite a bit but you have them with any service now. If we got the same package from BellSouth it would be $39.95 plus taxes and fees which run about $19 a month. We do save money with the Lecstar. Haven't had but one problem with it and would have had that even if we had been with BellSouth. We had a technician working in the junction box next door and apparently he "disconnected" our service. When my husband walked out to tell him about it, he ran a test and said that our service was not with BellSouth. He said we would have to report it to the service provider and have them do a work order (and would have had to do this had our provider been BellSouth). So, long story short, I called Cobb EMC, reported the phone out and they issued a work order--for BellSouth to come fix the phone!

  2. Nice lightening and sound affects but where is the rain???????????

I was in beautiful downtown Austell at that time and let me tell you, they got rain and lots of it. Lots of lightning, thunder, wind and rain.

We came on home to beautiful unincorporated Cobb (though just a matter of time until either Austell or Powder Springs gets us). We got here around 11. At 11:30 I was still mopping up the rain that had blown in my windows. We went to Austell thinking we weren't going to be there long and having no idea that a storm was coming.

I haven't been out to check the rain gauge yet. I mopped up more than 3/4 inch out of my hallway by my front door!

Anybody know if there was any damage from this in and around downtown Dallas?

  3. Can anyone tell me where I can find a copy of this week's Paulding Sentinel.  I hear that my son's picture is in the football section!  I want to get a copy for his scrapbook.

    Thanks!

The Sentinel office, across from the courthouse, has them in a box out front.

EDITED TO ADD: The Sentinel doesn't have an office in Paulding. It is the Neighbor office that is on the square in Dallas.

  4. Do NOT respond to anything received in the mail asking for money to change your legal name. Some unsavory folks will send out letters stating that you MUST change your name and that they can do it for you for a nominal fee. DO NOT do it. When I got married, I received at least 10 of these letters, each one a scam.

And also the Georgia law on getting your DL changed...

Notice that the last line in the quote from the Georgia code says that failure to change name or address does NOT make the license invalid.

According to what a friend of mine said, he is currently a DeKalb County cop with a BS in criminal justice, it is an "administrative" statement and not a "penalty" statement (IOW, the DMV, the police or whoever cannot force you to change to your married name and cannot force you to change your address). Apparently they cannot suspend your license either for not making a change.

I would certainly question any letter that you get saying that you must make this change and wouldn't use my time to go to the SSA and sit to change it. You *can* do all of it by mail.

I'd be interested in knowing if any of these letters any of you received from the "DMV" were actually from the State of Georgia Department of Motor Vehicles or if they "appeared" to be official letters. As someone stated, after she got married she got a number of these offering to change her name, for a fee, and they were all scams.

The person (or persons) who stated that they got a letter from the SSA about the fact that their name was never changed probably got the letter because of a tax return. You are supposed to have everything relating to your Social Security account (the name, the number, your employment records and your tax records) all in the same name. It doesn't have to be your married name--it can be your maiden name. Just so they match, nobody cares.

I know one woman who went through months of changes to make a name change legal, so that when she got married she decided there was no way she was taking her husband's name.

BTW, do they require you to show your Social Security card when you renew your drivers license? Or is this just when you change the name on your card?

  5. :o Bring all our cats and dogs to this event.. We don't care what county ya live in.. Its being done for the animals ..Not us...Rabies is a KILLA.. 6. She may have been confused if the elementary school let out late because of the inmate. I was concerned about the latch key kids going home with an inmate on the loose AND a power outage. Phones were out at the school & BOE, DPD was doing their best with what they had, the SO helped alot with information and I felt better. I was told that the elementary school was released at 2:40 which is late. It is unfortunate that a child is walking around trying to get home in all this.

All this happened today? I left work around 2:30 or so and everything was fine. Went right by Dallas Elementary and everything seemed fine. No power failure at that time (at least I guess not--the sign at the bank was working). No big police presence either. Buses weren't at the school (I would have noticed them being there later than usual since I left work earlier than usual).

Hope the girl is OK. Did somebody stop by or call the police to let them know? They are right across the street from where she must have been.

  7. Carol ~ I'm not sure about out-of-county residents, but I will check on it and let you know. ~ M

Thanks. She needs all the help financially she can get right now and definitely needs to get the dog and the cat vaccinated and snipped. If it isn't for out of county residents, is it possible Cobb has something similar?

  8. What a deal!

The Paulding Animal Control and Paulding Humane Society will be holding a Rabies Clinic and Animal Fair on Saturday, September 11, 2004 at Taylor Farms Park. Hours will be 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Rabies vaccines will be $5.00 each and multiple pets are welcome. Microchips will be available for $10.00 each. Both will be CASH ONLY.

We will also be having pets available for adoption from the shelter, food and drink, educational information, raffle prizes and much more.

Free patriotic Bandanas will be given to every pet who attends.

A special "Thank You" also goes to Dr. Julie Lugar for her participation and constant support in helping provide this valuable service to the community. Please plan on coming out and help us make this clinic a success!

If you need further information, please call the shelter at 770-445-1511.

Is this just for Paulding residents?

My daughter, who will be living in Cobb any day now, has a dog and a cat who both need vaccines. And neutering.

  9. Come tax time if you are married, you have to have you name changed on you SS card, no matter how you file. Never heard of the DL law.

There is no provision that you have to change your name even when you file a tax return. Just that the name on the return and the name on the card have to match. You can't file as Jane Smith if you have Jane Jones on your card. Your W2 would also have to be in the name on your card. There is no requirement that a woman take her husband's name--only that the name on your Social Security card be the one on your W2, tax return and anything else dealing with government.

As long as the name on the card and the name on the return match, you can file electronically. The names must match, however, otherwise the return will be rejected when filed.

You sometimes find out what your co-worker's legal name is when you file their tax return. ;)

  10. what kind of mattress do you all sleep on? do you like it? hate it? or all they all the same in your eyes?

Pillowtop, about 15 inches thick made by Stearns and Foster. Will never get another pillowtop (not recommended if you have back problems). Will never get another one that thick.

Growing up always slept on a Beautyrest by Simmons. My dad worked there and with the discount he got, we were able to always have a top-of-the-line mattress for a low price. Next one will be a Beautyrest. ;)

Slept on a waterbed from 1978 to about 1993 or so. Full motion. Loved it. Really believe it is part of the reason I have so much problem with back pain. :(

and NO! They are not all the same

  11. ok i have a question, that maybe one of our law enforcement people can answer,

i was told the other day that if your last name on your SS card was not changed to your married name then they (the law) would be sending you a letter through mail you have 30 days to get it changed :o

in other words, when you got married and did not have your married name put on the SS card and your madien name taken off (of course this applies to women only) the new law now states they can pull your lisences if this is not corrected, has anyone recieved a letter like this? my friend has until sept 10, to get her name changed on her SS card,

she has to go the ss adminstration building to do all of this, and you have to make an appointment also, <_>

i am thinking it is more the SS office tha thas decided to go this route on this, and not the law, what do you all think?

The primary issue with the name on the Social Security card and your "legal" name (whether it is you married name, maiden name or whatever) is that if the two don't match you **cannot** file an electronically submitted tax return.

Also, now your employer should have your name in their records as it appears on your Social Security card. If you have gotten married and have taken your husband's name this should be changed.

Now, if you get married but don't take your husband's name for whatever reason, there is no need to get your Social Security account changed. I know of several women who do not use their husband's last name, most of them for professional reasons (obtained licenses for professions in their maiden name), whose Social Security accounts are still in their maiden (or former married) name.

As to "pulling your license" if you don't get it changed, your license is supposed to be in your legal name so if you got married and took your husband's name you should get EVERYTHING changed--from Social Security account to insurance coverage to driver's license.

I *thought* that you could get a name change on your Social Security account via mail. I quite certain I did (but that was many, many years ago) and that my youngest daughter did that in 2001. A check on the Social Security website (I think it is www.ssa.gov) would give more information.

  12. I be a catfish - married to a boll weevil. Remember when everybody would ask: "What's your sign"? and you knew what they were talking about.

Can you imagine that line in a bar nowadays? What's your sign --- Catfish.

Well, when I was younger and "out and about", there were a lot of Sagatarians (may not have spelled it correctly) out there -- they were all nuts!!!

Now they're known as "butter beans".

Well, when I was younger and "out and about", there were a lot of Sagatarians (may not have spelled it correctly) out there -- they were all nuts!!!

    :D

All of us that I know about still are all nuts!

  14. I rarely go into convenience stores- use pay at the pump. If I go in, the little ones start hollering for stuff!

You can always go by their office, just down the street from the courthouse on W. Spring Street. Park in the city lot next to the Bellsouth building (near First Baptist Church).

Unless they have changed in the last few months, they are on the "honor" system and you may have to find someone to actually take the money. They usually have them sitting on the counter on the right just inside the door with a box or something to drop your quarter in.

  15. Anyone know if the credit unions offer business checking? I am looking for a new bank for our business account but would really like to move all of our accounts if I'm going to move that one. We have two at Community Bank and two at Wachovia.
