It is not the responsibility of any state to "take care of their own". It is your job and my job to take care of ourselves as individuals. You might consider renting two minivans. I usually rent from Enterprise and get a corporate rate. I drove 6 of us in a Chrysler Caravan from ATL to Kansas City for under 1000. Our trip was 4 or 5 days with unlimited mileage as I recall. I have a feeling that driving will be your best bet.
