  1. Mariposa:

    I understand your consternation.

I do recall back in 1990 he had a call-in news conference in which I participated. It was back right after the US Supreme Court ruled that burning the flag was an act covered by the first amendment and he was expressing outrage at that ruling.

He made his spiel stating how he felt that was a horrid decision.

My turn to ask a question came. I asked: "Obviously, you've spent a great deal of time railing against this decision by the Supreme Court regarding what is allowable speech and what isn't ... on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the most critical of issues how would rank this flag burning issue in comparison with the budget deficit, the Israeli peace process, the fall of the Soviet Union for instance?

He complimented me on the question suggesting that was one of the best he had been asked. Oh, and like yours Mariposa; as I recall he ducked answering as his agenda was to raise emotions about the SC decision.

At least you got respect. It wasn't just him, both of them pretended not to be able to hear me, but everyone else in the building could.

  2. Ask him if he remembers pretending not to understand the questions of a 16 year old who was on a panel in a debate with Crandall Bray in 1986!

They had a debate at a local elem school and the panel was made up of reporters from two local papers and a representative from the high school newspaper--me. The political science teacher wrote questions for me to ask, and they were tough ones. They both said they could not understand me, so I was basically ignored and felt humiliated. Then, I found out that the audience could understand my questions, and I could be understood on the local radio station (it was recorded). I listened to it.

Can you tell I'm still bitter about it?

  3. We will be holding a 4 day camp in February while children are out of school for winter break (Mon. - Thurs. 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.). The price for this camp is $125. There will also be a day camp during spring break and 2 summer camps one in June and another in July (Mon. - Fri., 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.). The price for these camps is $150 per child. There is a family discount of $25 per child when 2 or more children attend. We offer early drop off and late pick-up at no extra charge for working parents.

    Thanks

  4. I can sharpen just about anything. I could do it quick on the grindstone, or slow and by hand with a file. Depends on what kind of shape the machete is in. Once someone has used a grindstone and heated the blade, you're pretty much stuck with using that method from then on. But sure...I can!! :)

I bought it new and the blade has never been sharpened.

Please pm the approximate cost and where/when I could bring it. I'm off this week so I'm flexible as to times.

  5. When I checked the website at 8:46 (yes I looked) it was showing that schools were closed. Maybe you need to refresh your page, I don't know why yours didn't show it.

I think you may have been looking at the calendar to right that shows the calendar for school holidays and not the weather related announcement at the bottom of the page

  6. I totally see your point, I think teaching is one of the hardest jobs on earth. However, there ARE teachers and schools that take what they have and turn a school around. Even in low income high crime areas. Like the ones in Chicago. I am not a fan of tenure, but I also am not a fan of basing a teacher's job or pay ONLY on student performance. I have seen and known some teachers who should not have a job anymore. They are/were burnt out and just putting in time until they retired. I have also known teachers who lost their jobs (recently) who were amazing teachers. I think it just goes to show out system doesn't work. But the idea that teachers are against Barnes for the tenure issues of his last term seem a moot point at this time. More teachers lost jobs under Perdue than they ever did with Barnes. My biggest question is WHY are our choices Barnes and Deal? is this the best we have to offer?

I agree there are teachers who excell despite a bad situation and there are those who should not be teaching. You have both extremes in any job. I didn't mean to imply that teachers have no impact on student achievement, I just want people to understand that student achievement is a complex issue. It looks like a simple issue to say get rid of the bad teachers and only keep the good ones, but finding a true measure of who is good and who is not can not be based on one single test.

I do not forget how Roy Barnes dumped on teachers, but I wouldn't have voted for him anyway. I WILL NOT vote for Deal. I wish Karen Handel was still a choice.

  7. As far as voting, I'm voting NONE OF THE ABOVE

I'm voting for the third guy, not because I want him to be elected or think he WILL get elected, but in hopes that we will have the option of a third party in GA.

ALL of the choices for governor, lieutenant governor, and many other positions turn my stomach.

  8. Okay, so this is what the teachers are mad about? I just read through this and it seems to me all it does is eliminates job security for people that are not performing the job they are paid (with taxpayer money) to perform. Welcome to my world.

Read it and explain to me why a good, hard working teacher would have a problem with this. Might explain why some teachers realize that Barnes wasn't afraid to ruffle some feathers to make things right and they are supporting him.

I don't know of anyone who wants to support teachers who don't do their jobs. In ANY job, if someone doesn't do their part, it makes it harder on everyone. The problem with teachers' positions/tenure/pay being based on student achievement is that a teacher is only one factor in student achievement. There are many factors and its not fair to hold the teacher responsible.

-teachers don't have control over the home life of the student

-teachers can't make students come to school

-teachers can't make a student pay attention and learn if they refuse

-teachers can't force a student to do the work at school or home when they have zero motivation

-teachers have limits to what we can do to control behavior in a classroom and can not remove a student who is being disruptive. Many times, there's more than one student who has behavior issues to the point that it makes it hard for others to learn.

(most of you would be shocked at the number of kids who have severe problems at home, have no support at home, and teachers get no response from the parents or are told to deal with it at school because they can't do anything with them at home either)

Now moving on to the actual job of teaching:

-teachers don't control what they teach (it doesn't matter if we have issues with the curriculum or feel that it is impossible to teach that amount of material in a small time frame)

-teachers don't control the amount of responsibilities placed on them. If you think we plan a lesson, teach it, and grade papers and that's it, HAH!! If we could actually do those things, it would be wonderful.

-teachers aren't given equal access to materials needed to teach

What about the measures used to assess teacher's performance?

    - do you use one standardized test?

What about student's with learning disabilities?

What if the test is SEVERELY flawed?

What if many students in your class have had problems passing for years, are you still held responsible, even many have shown progress, but still aren't passing?

What if you teach gifted or advanced classes? Your test scores are great

What if you teach remediation or special ed? Your test scores will not be good.

What if you teach social studies (which has no leveling such as gifted or remediation) but because you are not on a team with a gifted teacher or advanced teacher, you have almost no gifted or advanced students, and have more than your share of students who are struggling. Guess what? Your test scores will be much lower than the Social Studies teacher who is on the team with the gifted language arts teacher, and the advanced math teacher. Which teacher did a better job? Hmmm its not an apples to apples comparison, so how do you judge a teacher on this?

  9. I was out that way yesterday and almost rear-ended a car while I was watching the show and driving. I saw some folks in the parking lot of the Big Chicken watching and know some other people who watched from Kennesaw Mountain. Maybe find a fast food restaurant in the general area that has outdoor seating.

  10. Wonder how the election on July 20 would have turned out if this happened earlier and it was Gregory and Pownall. That would have been fun.

We can thank the local garden club (GOP Party) for that. For putting another ethics issue candidate or ethics problem associated candidate in there. Becoming a bad habit.

Have they picked a winning candiate yet in the last 6 years...............Let's see: Ralph Reed...nope, JK rogers.....nope, Beverly Cochran.....nope, Ronney sibley.....nope, Glenn Richardson.....nope, Jerry shearin.........nope, and so on and so on. Is it just me or has most of them had ethics issues too. Looks like they need to find other people to take thier advice from or attach to. Seems they have lost touch with real America.

Maybe one day the local GOP will learn to get the G family and thier crew out of the party and then maybe they will have a winning/viable candidate and they will not drag other people down with them. This tarnished reputation will follow them for some time till they are gone.

Just my thougts from an outsider that used to be involved years ago.

I know some have had major ethical issues, but there are SOME local Rep. who have not had issues. I've never heard anything questionable about Howard Maxwell.

  11. I also do the tomato soup and grilled cheese except I put a little salsa in the soup and make the grilled cheese a quesadilla (corn or flour tortilla in a med hot skillet, add cheese, put another tortilla on top and flip until brown) (add peppers, mushrooms, chicken, sausage, etc if you want)

  12. Southern Staples--Cheap and Quick

Pinto beans (from dry beans or canned--only Lucks brand)

corn bread (cheap to make or buy cheap at Ingle's--old Ingles in Dallas unless you want sweet)

    sauteed cabbage or greens

    slice of tomato

    slice of onion

This was supper tonight except I threw in a couple of Lil' Smokies for beans n weenies

  13. Cheapest of the cheap...RAMEN

You can dress it up a little for better flavor and for a whole meal. It sort of like Hot and Sour soup.

    My version:

-1 tsp Sesame Oil (adds lots of flavor and I've had 1 bottle for over 6 mos)

-add little lemon juice or vinegar to taste (go light and you can add more at the end, if needed)

-a couple of shakes of hot sauce

-put in a handful of shredded cabbage and carrot as the noodles are boiling

cole slaw mix from the salad section works great, you can even use the broccoli slaw

-Cut a chicken breast into very small, thin pieces and saute for just a minute or two while the soup is coming to a boil and add to the soup near the end

-add some sliced green onion at the end

If I don't have chicken or don't want to take the time, I scramble an egg and pour it in slowly over the simmering soup as I stir slowly. It's sort of like egg drop soup.

Chopped peanuts are also good in it

  14. I wonder if GA's large number of counties have any impact on the higher cost of education in GA as compared to the amount spent on students. GA is only second to TX in the # of counties, and that's only because TX is so huge. Every other state has fewer and larger counties. I know that all systems are not based on counties, but if we have more systems with supers and other administrators in each system, that has to be more over-head as compared to the number of students in a system. Does that make any sense?

I agree that GA's education system needs work, but the schools alone can not fix the problem with student achievement and the drop-out rate. Part of the problem is way beyond the school's control.
