I "gave up" looking for a job. I just figured that I'd collect my unemployment and enjoy a year out of the work force. Of course, I continued to participate in groups and apply for jobs. It wasn't until I released my feeling of desperation and became almost aloof to potential employers that I saw my results begin to shift. I was more relaxed in interviews, more confident in negotiations, and eventually settled on a good fit. We all need to know our value, even if some don't want to see it.

This is very true. I took 10% less than my salary requirements to come to my current position. I did this for a number of reasons outside of wages. Since being here, I've found that I enjoy my colleagues, my management has full confidence and empowers my success, and all of that certainly compensates for the lower wages. I also know that as a revenue generating employee, my salary will go up as revenues increase.
