Gifted Classes Cut Because They Are Not Diverse Enough
NewsJunky replied to NewsJunky's topic in RECENT TOPICS
Nail on the head! The only way it will happen is if we allow the money to follow the child and parents can send their kids to the most challenging schools for THEM. It could also happen if their parents become as vocal for their gifted children as those parents who were for mainstreaming. -
If I bought a lottery ticket I would make darn sure I knew that I could burn that money and not miss it. When I plan something that is important to quality of life I make sure I plan with as much info as I can get. You can still get burned and I hear that we may all get burned if there is an economic collapse. I can't control whether that happens or not but I can try to make sure I plan as well as possible for my family in case it does.

You get it! I really wish we had more folks who did! -
Heard it both ways.

The planning for our retirement was based on some of the things that could happen. Insurance we purchase is based on what could happen. Going out in bad weather is something we need a plan for. Of course we care about planning for the future so we are able to take care of ourselves. I have said this before "lack of prior planning prevents piss poor performance". Think it was also a motto for the branch of service Hubby was a part of. Would I rely on a news station to give me advice about important issues and plans I should make? NO, but I might enter it into my information so I could ma

They call it a newspaper, I call it yard trash.

Call them and tell them you don't want them to throw their trash in your yard. I bet they will stop. Dick is not one of my favorite writers. -

The needs of the gifted students are last on the list because so many folks feel they "will get it anyway". How many of them do not realize their true potential or end up tuning out because they are not challenged? Not sure they are still a part of the special Ed Laws. It does not appear to be true. If it is true I would say it is time for those students parents to stand up for them and be heard as loudly as the children's parents who demanded mainstreaming. This is one of the many reasons why I support school choice. -

Thanks for the story. I agree with you. -
Gifted Classes Cut Because They Are Not Diverse Enough

You are not the object of this topic. The subject is children in school and specifically gifted children and the lack of challenging lessons provided for them in some schools today. Diversity is the reason given by the school in this topic. Don't think it applies to you. -

Wow! Did not expect that from you! Thanks for the explanation. The board is behaving in a weird way. Glad you did not mean the response for me because we are usually on the same page about education. -

You really should try to get yourself educated in the area of the real diversity in children. That would be the way they learn and the different abilities they have. You would do well on the board of the school in question. They don't have a clue either in my opinion. -

I think this quote sums up what is wrong with the effort to make all of the children in that school equal: "Freedom is not free; Free men are not equal, and Equal men are not free". Richard Cotton That school is taking the right of those students to be individuals away from them and giving them all a mediocre education. Sad! -

We agree on this one. It will not help us to get the doctors, scientists, and mathematicians we need. Some kids can just get there faster than others and we should not slow them down in the name of equality. -
More dumbing down of our American students? Is this racist? Anyone agree with this school's decision? http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2014/jan/30/nyc-school-cuts-popular-gifted-program-over-lack-d/ One mother conceded the program did have a lot of white students, but worried gifted students now won’t be challenged enough. a follow-up letter sent to parents Monday, Miss McDonald wrote: “At PS 193, we believe that all children can learn and achieve high standards. We also know that we want all children at PS 193 to have equal access to high quality, challenging curri

Great article that also speaks to personal responsibility: http://www.georgiapolicy.org/atlantas-icy-logjam-a-beacon-of-hope-for-the-future/#ff_s=aWKC

Really? I believe the Governor has taken full responsibility for how this was handled but don't you think that there are people who watch this stuff for the Governor and on whom he depends to wake him up? He would stay awake 24 hours a day if there were not. JMO

Hubby said there was some trouble in Hiram this morning. Roads must still be giving some folks a challenge.

LOL!!!

What else do you do when you are iced in? I know that I am not getting on the road today. Had enough real life drama on Tuesday. Kind of enjoying a what if discussion.

Good points! Lots to consider.

I thought our citizens handled themselves well considering the circumstances. Helped each other and found ways to deal with the situation. Guess if bombs were going off we would all be in a panic. Think that just reinforces the need for a good plan. Guess instead of talking about it here I need to be making them with my family. They are very dependable and we do trust each other. No need to wait on the government. People on p.com can't even agree on the need for a plan and some don't understand what others are saying so how can we expect any solutions to come from this topic?

Why are we talking about two different topics? This one is about the threat of a terrorist attack. You are talking about a snow event that is almost behind us. The subject is lessons we may have learned. At least I thought so.

Never said what you have stated. I said they did not have a plan for a terrorist attack until it happened and they did not! I did not blame the attack on any welfare program. I said their financial standing has a lot to do with their welfare programs and the way they run their state. If you are going to quote me please get it right! A plan for evacuation is not different Pubby. If one is not in place it is too late to wish you had one.
