  1. I suspect that they have enough confidence to build there,,,, makes you go hmmmm maybe they are hoping yall will die from the stress if they stretch it out in the courts long enough.

Seems there was a lot of confidence in being able to get away with anything, you have to wonder where that confidence comes from.

America has become a fascist nation and they know it. Most of our politicians are nothing but corporate america's whores. Voting these days is almost like chosing your rapist.

  2. That is our opinion as well.

The absurd part is the BOC has spent well over a MILLION so far just trying to block us from being able to get into court. Not to mention the time involved for the Courts.

We would love a fast track to finish discovery and then let a jury decide. That has been our primary goal from day one.

We have made ourselves available for 13 full days of depositions.

While at the same time, we have been allowed 1/2 of one day to depose Mickey Womble, the developer; and no one else.

And, of course, we are more than a bit put out how the county has allowed D.R.Horton to go on and build 3 houses next to our South line well within the disputed 40' buffer which was admittedly changed by community development, instigating the original suits.

Just did not seem Kosher to let them ignore the buffers while we have had pending litigation ongoing in the courts.

Its not like they don't have more than 100 other lots ready to build on.......why did they go on and put some of their first houses next to us ignoring the buffers ?

What do they do now if a jury determines the buffer was indeed to be 40' instead of the 25' they changed it to ?

Are they going to tear down these houses ?

Another state but developer had nearly completed one or two homes when the lawsuit concerning buffer was settled with neighbors behind infill neighborhood and they did have to tear them down. These were 200K+ over a decade ago.

  3. I lost my job a while back and my household has cut way back on its expenditures, I expect the County to do so to, even if it means layoffs. I can think off a good 100K plus in duplication over at Paulding County right now....

I really would like to know what the diference is between the IBA and the Economic Development Inc. that was recently created in this County. The new entity was sold as a way top avoid confusion (between IBA and Chamber)for entities interested in relocating. So we are paying big bucks, for Chamber, IBA and Economic Development...

  4. Ours is down another $20K+ but my taxes are still over 2K a year and for what? Don't use the schools, pay extra for garbage...

For those comsidering bailing- research the Mortgage Debt Forgiveness Act, it looks you may be to avoid federal tax liability if your house is foreclosed on prior to Jan 1, 2013 if I'm reading it correctly. Might have to bail now, with the backlog to make sure you meet the deadline..

  5. Cut out events such as Fireworks-- $25-50K

Cut down on payments to entities such as IBA ($200+ a year)

More furlough days for employees, no employee raises (when was the last time you had one)

Explain to me some of the departments have 30-40K vehicles like Explorers that I see employees driving around in?

Require every dept to cut off whatever % to make the shortfall!!!

  6. GA Dawg-

Are you seeing an upswing in the number of contract positions employers are looking for? I've heard that after/during recessions that a leading indicater that the job makey may be turning around is an increase hiring temp/contract workers. Just wondering what you are seeing locally..

  7. Last time I looked, since about 1980 the government forced me to buy insurance to cover any damage I do to your car (not mine) and will throw me in jail if I don't. At least this time, I'm the beneficiary of the insurance the government is forcing me to buy.

Heck, I can remember at time that if I was just unlucky (I was in the lottery) the government could force me to put on a uniform, crawl in the mud, and shoot at people I didn't have a beef against. It was called the draft and it was a measure of public service most citizens didn't have much love for, especially when they learned what a trumped up POS the Vietnam War was. I mean two years mandatory out of a lot of folks lives is a bit more of an imposition than an insurance policy that will treat you if you're sick.

  8. I don't think so and I hope, for Paulding County, I'm wrong. Yesterday (IMHO) was a dark day for the County, with the actions of the BOC and the DA's race. Actions that will directly affect every citizen. If I can ever sell my house, I'll leave the mess with you. The economy isn't going to get better, any time soon. It will be interesting to see where things are a year from now.

My sentiments exactly as out County is pretty much controlled now by Real Estate Brokers/Developers, etc... Hopefully their actions will bring jobs to the community and those of us wantingto get out can get out (sell our house) before the housing boom starts back up....

  9. Hmmm now that is interesting!(I wonder if they have a bunch of years in?) Do you know how to go about doing the records request?

Just go down to the BOC office, fill out a form and they have three days to get back to you on whether they can fulfill your request, what the cost will be for (copy expenses). I've never personally done one but that's the basic process. Others hopefully can offer up more details.

  10. surepip you keep harping on the salary of someone who worked for the county for a lot of years. Seriously you don't know how many assistants replaced her and what their starting salaries were? Keep adding.

I saw an open records requests of employees salaries recently and the new EA that David brought in was making in the 62-63 range.

  11. Beverly was the AA for Bill Carruth and Jerry Shearin for twelve years from 1996 to 2008 and never once spoke out against the tax increases that the citizens of Paulding County endured during that period of time.

Whitey- Were you a fly on the wall at the BOC office? How do you know she didn't voice her opinion concerning and opposition to the tax increases? You keep harping on why didn't she speak out against these increases, but tell me when would have been an appropriate time for her to do so? You've been to enough BOC meetings to know when it was appropriate to for the County Clerk to speak.

Many government employees will have opposing viewpoints to the elected opinions, how vocal do you expect them to be without losing their jobs?

Has it ever occured to any of you that perhaps Beverly saw things in her position that she was opposed to but limited in what she could do about it? Now that she no longer is an employee wants to serve the best interests of the citizens of the County and potentially work to correct some of the things that she deemed to be "wrong" at the County including countless tax increases...

  12. When I moved to this county a few years ago it became apparent to me that the leaders of this county were very short sighted in providing jobs and resources needed to entice companies to locate here.

Over the past several months I have listened to and talked with all of the candidates running for the county commission post, And have come to the conclusion that only a couple of the candidates really know, And, Have a plan to get this county out of the mess that we are in. I have lurked here on Paulding.com and read and listened to all of the rhetoric spewed out by the various candidates and surrogates of each campaign. And only two of those candidates have talked about the real issues of this County, Which is Jobs.

Only two candidates have talked about ways and means to bring those jobs to Paulding County, for that reason I will be supporting and voting for David Barnett for commissioner in post # 4 where I live.

I have also contributed to the Todd Pownall campaign since he is the other candidate that really understands the issues facing our County, and, have a plan to provide the needed jobs.

Part of my problems with politicians is they say what YOU the voter want to hear and often cannot deliver on those promises. We all know that jobs are the hot button issue, but for those that have worked in the development arena (and I have). Paulding County has many disadvantages in being able to attract industry:

Lack of quality land to build on: A large part of Paulding County is topographically unsuitable for large scale development. Land that is suitable for development (flat, with sewer access- such as the houses on 278 across from 278 and the new DR Horton s/d built further down) has been residential development.

Lack of infastructure- Most of the County is without sewer and will remain so because of the topography, and population density. The ongoing water issues the State of Georgia has with Lake Lanier will ultimately limit growth in the Atlanta area. Reservoirs take decades to permit, design and build and there has to be money in multiple budgets to actually build the thing. Additionally, the County has limited 4 lane access and will remain so for many decades, more than likely with 70% of GA DOT's annual budget going towards overhead and debt on previous projects. The airport adds a new dynamic to Paulding's infastructure. Granted it will attract some aviation related companies and those in the aviation industry will enjoy not commuting to Dobbins, Hartfield, etc., but without other infastructure in place we are limited!!!

No money for an incentives plan and lack of experienced Economic Development Staff- In order to be competitive in the interational bid to attract companies and jobs most of the time you need an incentives packages. Does Paulding County have the money to offer what would have to be a very aggressive incentives package to compensate for some of the above issues? In order to attract these companies, you need an experienced Development Staff with strong ties to your State Economic Development personnel, relationships with site selection consultants, Commercial Real Estate Developers and be willing to establish relationships with Development personnel in banks and companies you hope to attract.

Most importantly, this County has been known for years in certain circles as being development unfriendly. Has anything been done to change this perception?? This is a problem that in order to fix has the potential to cost serious money. Other Counties have hired PR firms and engaged the services of specialized firms to work with them to adress this issue and begin the process of re-branding the County, city, whatever.

Prime case in point, the tenative "green" development around the airport. I do not see how in the world they can expect an entity to invest upwards of a billion dollars to acquire the land and then develop it with the County having no tree ordinances, no recycling initiatives to speak off, etc. that you would expect to see in a Community. Now that the free flowing money chasing stupid projects is over, I would hope that the County would rethink what they could seriously do around the airport. I'm glad to see that the current administration has engaged the services of GA Tech to help them progress forward with Economic Initatives and the rail spur and hospital are positive steps forward.

So, my take on the situation is that unless some of these candidates can expedite the reservoir, get a bunch of roads 4 laned, can somehow revamp the County budget to be able to offer an aggressive incentives packages, invest in PR work to rebrand the County's image and has strong ties to the Development arena (site selectors, the Harley Davidson CEO, etc.) and can start shuffling the Fortune 500 companies into Paulding County, then some of them ought to be more modest in what they are promising constituents.
