Man barricaded, threatening suicide shot near Hiram High

Paulding's Sheriff Office deputies shot and seriously injured a man wanted in Cobb County for armed robbery after he barricaded himself this evening in a residential neighborhood near Hiram High School at aabout 8:00 PM .

After several hours of negotiation with the man, his identity has not been disclosed, the man leveled his gun at deputies and forced them to fire in a scene often called suicide by police.

Deputies had received a tip that a stolen car was parked near a residence on Virgie Ballentine Drive and Boulder Run and initiated an investigation at about 8 p.m. Thursday evening. When contacted about the vehicle, the suspect pulled a handgun, barricaded himself and began threatening suicide, according to a report filed by Sheriff's Sargent Brandon Gurley.

It was during the negotiations that local officers discovered the existence of outstanding warrants in Cobb County for armed robbery and aggravated assault.

According to Sgt. Gurley, after several hours of negotiations, the suspect eventually pointed the gun at deputies forcing them to fire their weapons striking the suspect. He is currently receiving medical attention but appears to be in serious condition.

The sheriff's office controlled access to the scene and were staged in the area of Boulder Run and Virgie Ballentine Dr off of Bill Carruth Pkwy.

Maybe he figured they would not shoot or it was a death by cop desire

I hope he was not that confused, I can guarantee anyone that if you raise a firearm at law enforcement you are committing suicide.

Our officers have been trained to identify people with mental issues and how to take steps to diffuse the situation.

He was a criminal, he may have been a depressed criminal but he was wanted for armed robbery.

The update filed by the SO today notes the man was wanted for crimes in Marietta. I'm not familiar with the Canton Road cross-dressing robber ... but he wasn't the sharpest blade in the drawer; he apparently stole a new On-Star equipped Chevy Suburban and it reported its location to officers. It was while they were investigating the stolen vehicle pinpointed by GPS that the incident began.
