  1. I am in Legacy Pointe in New Hope and mine went out last night as well. I couldn't call because my phone was with them. Hmmmmmm.

I went with Comcast when I moved out here 4 months ago. Dealing with them is just plain painful. I need to do a shot before calling them.

  2. OK, I have daylilies around my mailbox - they only bloom for a little while. What can I plan in there so that I will have flowers all year round - or at lest some greanery - We cut them back after they bloom so it looks VERY bare!

    Help Please

Year round is going to be tough to have flowers.

I planted begonias and rosemoss around my mailbox so that I would have the splash of color through October. I'm not sure what I'll put out there in October. The begonias and rosemoss can really handle the heat and sun.

  3. Yes, you can get discount tix for Six Flags, White Water, Stone Mtn and Sun Valley. The card is the coop connections card. If you haven't received one you can call and request one at 770-942-6576 or you can visit us in the office.

Thanks, just called and they are sending it right over.

  4. Greystone - $26 daily/$52 season pass. Cash only, price does not include tax. You can purchase them from the cashiers at either Dallas or Dville offices.

Forgive my ignorance, as I am new here.

I have read this about Greystone a couple times, something about a discount card. Are you talking about the power company? I can get Six Flags tickets at their office? What is this card that folks keep talking about?

  5. And let's not forget that these "victims" who chose to stay behind, despite serveral days notice, to loot their own neighborhoods are now bringing their lifestyle with them to their new homes:

After Welcoming Evacuees, Houston Handles Spike in Crime And now, police say that southwest Houston, long recognized as a problem area, is facing another manifestation of the Louisiana exodus: Katrina crime. ...

  6. I saw a couple other Louisianians in here.

I was born in Shreveport, but remember Baton Rouge as being my home for the longest period of time.

Couldn't figure out how to upload a pic, sorry.

  7. Im sure most of you know about the new bowling/arcade/pool place opening up (I think its called stars and strikes).....if my kids ask one more time if its July 15th yet I will scream! Im already anticipating going broke but I have to admit Im a little excited about the bumper cars. I think Im already dreading all that is going to go with this place !

I don't understand "all that is going to go with this place". Are you thinking that this is not going to be a safe place to bring kids?

  8. Be very careful when you get into town..if you take the bus from the Airport it drops you in town not at the French Quarter ....you have to walk down to it...hold on to your bags when walking through this area as crime is high ....just keep walking straight to your destination ..this area is very unsafe it has always been this way i have been to N,OL lots of times, you best get a taxi or a shuttle bus to the French Quarter , when you get there you are ok , cops everywhere .

Rental cars are VERY affordable in N.O. and I recommend getting one, as many of the places you may want to go are quite a ways away.

  9. Watch Discovery Channel much? Greensburg has it's own television series now. Produced by Leonardo DiCaprio. They're rebuilding the town. Green.

Oh, and my family in Southern Mississippi is doing well. Thanks everyone for your thoughts and prayers as they continue to struggle to rebuild.

This is the point I was going to make, but you beat me to the punch. I have family in Biloxi, which was much harder hit with hurricane damage than New Orleans was (remember, New Orleans flooded due to levee breaches on a bright sunny day).

The people of Biloxi, after the winds subsided, laced up their work boots and began cleaning up and rebuilding. When they finished their home, they helped their neighbor. When the 2 of them finished, they went to the next house, and so on, and so on.

Another reason for the quicker turnaround in Biloxi is that many of these people were responsible and actually insured their property, whereas New Orleans remained mostly uninsured or underinsured (flood damage is not covered by a basic homeowner's policy).

Many of the "victims" in New Orleans looked to Uncle Government to save them, rather than looking inward. I do not know if this is a race issue or just a New Orleans vs. Biloxi issue. To the best of my knowledge, their demographics are very similar.

  10. Thanks everyone for all the awesome ideas. I'm excited!

I just re-read my posts and saw how negative I was sounding.

New Orleans is a ton of fun the 1st or 2nd time you go, and you will have fun with the recommendations that are on here. I've been to Philly several times myself and found them to be very similar in regards to the knowing which neighborhoods to visit. You'll have a blast, sorry to be Mr. Raincloud.

Oh, and Geaux Tigers! (sorry, I'm an LSU alum)

  11. If you're gonna take a day trip........go to Lafitte.

You can take a guided swamp tour, or walk through Jean Lafitte Park on your own.

    Great recommendation here!

I also agree that N.O. is probably the dirtiest town I have visited in this country. For safety reasons, do not venture far outside the French Quarter. I lived in Denham Springs and dreaded when out of town family came to visit and wanted to go to N.O.

That being said, south Louisiana can be a beautiful part of the country. Just watch the bad neighborhoods (which is almost all of them other than the French Quarter).

  12. I'm a big fan of freedom.

I don't know when it became evil for a public company to make a profit.

Freedom means choices. They chose to put a great product on the market that we all choose to buy. If enough of us were truly fed up with the oil companies, then a truly innovative American company would invent the next generation of energy for public consumption. They, then, would make record breaking profits.

I do not like paying these high prices any more than the next guy. Therefore, I chose to buy a house closer to my office. I choose to work from home as often as possible. I choose to not make as many 1 stop trips as I did before. These choices save me more than the additional cost of the higher gas prices over the course of the year. My total gas expenditures have gone down since the gas price increases began. I am also doing my part to soften the demand, which is the backbone of capitalism. I would much rather see the market correct itself the American way, through supply and demand, than through other forms of market manipulation.

  13. Thanks, NiNH!

There is always a reason to oppress one person, or one group of people, below another. The fact is that there are jobs more suitable for a man, while other jobs are more suitable for a woman. The pay in this instance may be consistant with what a man does is worth more money, and vise versa.

We are talking about common hourly pay mostly, but salary is also considered. In the situation, you mentioned, common hourly pay cannot be considered a factor. If a woman is not there she does not get paid, period, and that's the way it should be.

I agree with you completely. I think, the facts I was reading, was rounding up all the hours over the course of a lifetime and coming up with the statistics you were referencing.

Let me throw in the other side of the argument here and see if you find any reverse sexism. A recent study mentioned that, in child custody cases, over 90% of the time the mother is awarded principle custody due the the reasons that we were discussing earlier. Is this a double standard? Isn't it just as sexist to state that women are better parents than men 90% of the time as it is to say that men are 25% better employees than women? I don't really have a stance here, just makes for interesting debate.

  14. Ya'll don't jump on me here, just wanted to pass along some facts that I read in a book recently.

Women, on average, miss much more work than men, especially when a family is involved. In most cases, sick children are tended to by the mother, who must miss work. Plus, the time off to have a baby, coupled with the many, many pressing things that need a parent's attendance are, on average, the mother, which results into a lower attendance average over the course of the years.

This, plus the fact that women tend to leave the workforce 10-13 years sooner than men was one of the many reasons that this book gave for employers going with the statistics and giving a higher monetary value to a man over a woman.

I'm not saying this is my stance, just some information to throw out there for debate.

I know there are many, many examples of women having better attendance, a better work ethic and more hands on involvement from the fathers, this was just a lumping together of everyone into statitics.

  15. We are planning on taking a cruise to Nassau this year, but I wasn't sure if we are required to have a passport or not.

My husband says we don't have to have one until January 1st, but I want to know from someone that has traveled there before.

    Thanks!

If you are going by boat, you need a U.S. driver's license or other government ID AND a copy of your birth certificate. I know you said you were taking a cruise, but an FYI, if you go by plane, you need a passport.

  16. I need some help. I have been craving Dogwood's for a few days now.

I tried to go for dinner on Sunday, but they closed at 3.

I know that there is a weekday that they are closed, but can't remember which day it is. I tried calling, but nobody answers, which makes me think that it may be today (Tuesday). Anyone know their hours? I don't want to drive down from New Hope to a closed restaurant again.
