  1. I wouldn't. This is my 2nd time around, if my wife were to pass on, I would just assume that the man upstairs does not have a family in his plans for me.

I think she would, and would hope that she would. We are in our 30's, I certainly would not want her to spend the rest of her life alone out of "respect" for me. I would hope that she would honor me by living a happy life.

  2. The employer pays the FUTA and SUTA taxes, not the employee.

I think you answered my main question here. Are you saying that employers are forced to buy into this "insurance" policy on your behalf? Meaning, UE benefits aren't just part of your income taxes, but there is a certain tax paid by employers specifically for this purpose?

  3. I do not put unemployment in the same category with welfare. It is a benefit that you pay for while you work; and is very much like a type of insurance. In order to receive benefits, you have to have a record of employment, etc. You didn't ask, but what I don't agree with, is someone who waits out their benefits before they get another job.

I agree with this too. I had a friend who turned down good jobs because he made more money on UE.

  4. Wasn't sure if this belonged in the politcial forum or here.

I'd like to get an array of opinions on this question. I'm not sure where I stand.

Part of me says that any money from the govenment is welfare, and taking the money would make me a hypocrit, as my political leanings are definitely to the right, and I frequently speak out against people who abuse the welfare system.

The other part of me knows that I am required to pay into unemployment benefits through taxation against my will, and my employer is required to match it against his will. Is not claiming unemployment benefits the same as not claiming your Social Security?

If you can certainly make it without the benefits, is that the same as wrecking your car and not calling State Farm to make a claim?

A penny for your thoughts. (unless your thought is "someone asked this same question last year, didn't you go back and read?")

  5. The biggest mistake I made with my first home was that I didn't have enough patience in furnishing it. I went into debt buying new furniture, new lawn mowers, paint, etc.

I regretted it, took years to pay off. Advice I always give is be patient and pay with cash.

Congratulations. May your home be a place of peace and a blessing to your family.

  6. I've been going to the Publix on Dallas Highway for over a year now -- and they've been doubling coupons for a long time -- not sure if it's been a full year, but it's definitely been more than 6 months.

I wonder if it is the store's choice or if it's a corporate thing?

Allow me to correct myself. I just discovered that Publix doubled last month. I was happier than the proverbial pig in poop :)

  7. This question is getting about as bad as the halloween question.

Oh, BTW, when are we trick-or-treating this year?

Someone throws this bomb out there every time someone asks a question that may have come up months or years ago.

Do you really expect people to read through every thread on this forum before posting a question? Seriously, wouldn't it be easier to just skip a thread that is redundant to you than to patronize the person that did not take a week to read every post on here to make sure it has not been asked before?

Sorry to be snippy, but this just keeps happening. If you guys that have been on here for years want to form your "special club" of PCOM hard core users, then please do so, or tell us casual users that we should go somewhere else, as this gets really old.

  8. Glad to see that the opinions here are in line with the ones that go on in my car every time we go to Sonic.

I rarely carry cash, and was wondering that, if I don't have cash, should I skip Sonic? If those gals make the $2.00 or so "server" wage, then I am really hosing them. If they are paid the same wages as the person working the window at Burger King, then no harm no foul.

  9. My wife and I always ponder this when we go to Sonic.

Are you expected to tip the carhops? If so, why are you not given the option when you use your credit/debit card?

Are the carhops paid a server wage, or minimum wage?

    Please help settle this debate.

  10. The illegals are not the ones addicted to government dependence....that would be us.

From a different viewpoint.....from what I see in my profession, the immigrants from Mexico and South America are hard working people willing to do what many of us don't want to do. They often live below their means so that they can send money back home to their families. Do they pay taxes? You bet they do. They pay sales tax on everything they buy here. They also pay social security taxes that they will most likely never collect on. Particularly the "illegals" with a fake ssn. They have social security and medicare taken out of their paychecks and never file a tax return to get a refund of federal or state withholding because they are afraid of being caught. They just want to work. They are not on welfare or affirmative action programs. I don't profess to have the answer, but we need to find a way to assimilate them into our society.

I have far more respect for them than I do many of our fine "citizens" who refuse to work and believe they are entitled to be fed, clothed, housed and doctored by the government (that's us!). And I am about sick of the people who come into my office and inform me --or let slip--that they are on disability, but made $50,000 painting houses or whatever they managed to do to get paid under the table. Our government is too broken to run these entitlement programs. And...since the minorities will soon be the majority, maybe we can do away with some of these programs.

I agree with some of what you are saying.

Here is where we disagree. It is not "us" that depend on government, as in all Americans. I don't like being painted with that broad brush no more than hispanics like it when people assume that they are illegal. Most of "us" work, pay taxes, and don't live off the government.

Also, paying social security taxes is great, but income taxes is where you are contributing to the "big hat". Right now, the top 10% of wage earners pay over 70% of all personal income taxes, while the bottom 50% pay less than 3%. If you are living in this country, you are protected by its military, police, justice system and children are educated in public schools.

Which leads me to this point. Yes, you are abusing the system when you are consuming the above listed services, plus completely abusing our emergency rooms and not helping foot the bill.

If this trend continues, along with the tripling of the ones that are abusing these systems but not paying income taxes, then the tax burden will continue to shift disproportionately while the folks using the tax money grows.

  11. Oh come on guys, this is a message board. We should be able to give opinions about things other than who takes the best coupons.

    Here is my $.02.

The part that concerns me the most is that the #1 export from Mexico seems to be poverty. If hispanics are going to be the majority, then who is going to pay all the taxes? Right now, the top 10% of wage earners pay around 70% of all personal income taxes while the bottom 50% pay less than 3%. If this boom in population is going to be anchor babies and Latin America's poor, then this should be a real concern for all Americans no matter where you stand on the immigration issue.

My hope is that the next generation or two of hispanics will find a way to pull themselves out of poverty. Their work ethic certainly suggests that this can happen, but we must stop the flow of new immigrants into this country or the cycle of government dependence will continue.

  12. In my opinion, yes. Our founding fathers laid specific rules in reference to taxation, how much and what these funds shall be used for. And no where did it mention taking from one and giving to another, be it our entitlement programs or sending billions to Darfur.

You are correct sir. Nowhere in our founding documents does it say that the role of government is benevolence. Teachers, rightfully so or not, as perceived as a representative of your local, state and federal government. Folks get upset with a government representative forces one to hand over their private property so that it can be redistributed at the government's (aka teacher's) discretion. It gets worse when it is done to children.

I understand the "mountain out of a molehill" argument when it comes to crayons, just framing the discussion on why we (folks opposed to this) feel this way.

  13. I had the same problem with my son (11, his mother gave him the phone, not me). He "zombied" out a lot with his phone.

We added the Comcast phone for $25 per month, and I took his cell away when I am not there or during family time.

I give it to him when he is at a friend's house or has earned the privelege, but it stays in my drawer most of the time.

He can use the house phone to call his buddies, but I got sick of him being "zoned out" all the time.

It really didn't upset him all that much, now he actually leaves the house on his bike, knocks on his friend's doors and asks if they can come outside. It's a miracle :)

  14. I would love to have a Popeye's chicken somewhere in Paulding county. That is our family's favorite. Taco Bell would be cool in New Hope too.

I'd love to have a good adults only sports bar in New Hope. I like Beef O' Brady's and Johnnie's for watching a game and having a beer, but sometimes you just want to leave the kids home and let loose.

I'll follow that up with a good cab service :D

  15. "Community supplies" are not a Paulding County policy, it is the individual teacher's choice. I personally like students to bring in their own supplies with their names on them. I usually pick up extra supplies during these really good sales for the expected 3-4 students who will not bring them in on their own. And I usually have a parent or 2 who will offer to buy extras if we need them.

This is exactly what I wanted? Thank you LM_BLUE. Why couldn't you have taught my rug rat? Just ask, we'll help.

  16. I tend to agree with a lot of things posted in this thread -- i.e., when I buy my kids specific items and it gets taken away, etc. -- however, some things are just plain petty. Yes, there are definitely parents out there that purposely don't buy the supplies their kids need because they know that most parents over buy and there will always be left overs. I agree, this happens quite often .... but seriously, most kids don't see that part of it (especially the younger elementary kids). If that mentality is taught to them by saying these are "my" supplies -- that is exactly how that child is going to act. Maybe this is teaching them compassion or maybe to share. I certainly hope that if my son saw another student with no paper, no pencils, etc., that he would GIVE that child some supplies -- regardless of the reason because in essence -- none of the reasons given are the child's fault! You can't teach your kids to be caring and giving under "certain" circumstances. No, you don't teach them to be a blind fool either, but come on ... it's paper, pens and pencils people -- $5.00 tops. How would you feel if your child didn't have supplies at school (regardless of whose fault or the reason) and another parent had a coronary because you shared "their" child's supplies? If that happened to me, I'd hand the parent a $5.00 bill and tell them to calm down now, I reimbursed them for "their" supplies that my child "used".

I am going to disagree with you, only slightly, here. I don't think it is the teacher's job, nor would he/she want it, to teach "compassion" to kids in these cirucumstances by having them confiscate their property and hand it over to the other kid. That's our job. That's our church's job (to teach compassion). I would hope that my son would offer the other child his pencil, paper, etc. The point is, that it should be our/his choice. It's not up to the school to be compassionate on my behalf because they think I'm too greedy, dumb (fill in your own adjective here) to do it.
