  1. As does the gov't CAFE standards from the 70s are a big part of this problem, not to mention the breaks that foriegn car companies are given in building and selling their product here that American companies aren't given overseas (this last part isn't just an auto industry issue)
  2. The big 3 employee more Americans then any foriegn company. This isn't a hard concept to understand. Funny. Most reputable economist agreed that the banks and auto industry were headed for failure (not ALL, but a lot). The disagreement came in if the gov't should bail them out or not.
  3. Better be careful - your job maybe too when this is said and done. Karma is a fical bitch. I don't think people realize how deep these roots go. It isn't just the UAW workers either - its the white collar middle managers that will be hurting the most.
  4. Your right. Now, ask yourself why GM builds the Cobalt at all.....CAFE standards. Your starting to get to the root of the issue - good job. Compare cars that Americans actually want to buy in mass and see who sells the best in those classes, JD Power can be your guide. You actually think they would not have - you don't pay attention much do you? No we won't so I guess it was 6 in one half dozen in the other.
  5. do you really think we would have survived a collapse of both the auto and banking industry happening at the same time?
  6. Yup - its why I drive an AMERICAN car. This isn't the 80s anymore - that excuse doesn't hold water. One other little point to MrsH's article. While they were sitting around collecting their fat checks they WEREN't collect unemployment benifts. Just something to think about.
  7. Now for the other side of the story, and no I don't have a link - its direct from the source, see I have family that was laid off - that "stare at the wall to get their riches" . These workers had a contract, the pay is no different then anyone else that has a contract. GM closed their plant, those that couldn't be relocated are given the money they are owed based on their contracts. The "dollar an hour rate" that keeps getting thrown around is a total value package. It includes health benifts, vacation time, stock options etc - it isn't straight cash as is implyed with all these articl
  8. Gotta love people that run their mouth based on what they hear on the news. You want some people to talk to about their "25 dollars an hour" they would like to know where the rest of their paycheck has been these past years, that is for sure.
  9. ...and now we will end up in the political forum. Thanks.
  10. Show me one person that makes that for sweeping the floor. You may want to look at how this "huge" 25 dollar an hour salary is calculated first. This affects more then just the line workers by the way. It's actually the middle managers in the offices that are going to be hurt the worst. They have no pension, at least not anymore.
  11. The 21,000 is the first wave from GM themselves - the other 100,000 will be in dealership closings. They have not even factored in supplier cuts etc. yet. Guess I'm just a dumbass then. There are things that could have been done to help, Things that would have cost the American public very little. Things that would have allowed people that work hard to earn a decent wage and not 14 bucks an hour. I've documented them before, experts have documented them. They were ignored - and now we have this. I pray I'm wrong, but I doubt it. Who do you think is going to pay the unemployme
  12. 120,000 jobs will be lost, and this is only the tip of that iceburg. For those that like to use Delta as an example please click the link in this link and notice they aren't in the same class. I hate bailouts, but this may be the final nail in America's coffin in terms of unemployment. If you think someone you know won't be affected by this you are kidding yourself. There are many to blame, the UAW, poor CEOs, the gov't regulating a business, hippie tree huggers, and the American public's complete failure to understand that buying a foriegn car does not support American workers as much as
  13. Glad to hear you made it. ...to bad for the others.
  14. ...and who do we have to thank for this "Patriot Act". Talk about not seeing the trees through the forest.
  15. "Panther" was the test name for the orginal Camaro. Chevy dropped the name because they wanted all the cars to start with a "C". PSD you aren't far off with the "Gorries Black Panther Camaros" as that is one reason or at least rumor at the GM proving grounds has it that he named them that. The day the Panther died..... http://wiki.gmnext.com/wiki/index.php/The_...he_Panther_Died
  16. This car is incrediable. Even the v6 version will out perform many older v8 muscle cars. This car may be the one that saves GM. Mustangs beware the Panther is back! (Lets see how many real car people are out there and understand this reference)
  17. Helmet and seat belt laws should not exisit period. However I find it funny as hell that Ga is the only state that doesn't require it for "farming reasons" but states like Iowa and Nebraska don't use that excuse.
  18. Most bars (and people for that matter) don't even know what those are. It was the get drunk quick drink of choice in my college years.
  19. There is one I haven't had in a while. Good stuff.
  20. Yup. Professionals don't go out on St. Pats, Day before Thanksgiving or New Years. To Risky. Everyone have fun. I'll stop by this weekend for a Guiness on Tap.
  21. Most school districts in Michigan no longer offer it as a free course, most droped it in the 90s.
  22. The issue I have with parents teaching is most of them can't drive. At least in Michigan, the drivers ed courses are taught by professionals that know what they are doing. There is more to it then learning the rules of the road - you can learn that on the internets. They taught me how to get out of a skid, stop short, "panic" stop etc. Granted this course was almost 1000 dollars but yes my parents paid for half of it (the other half I paid for out of my pocket). I don't think the state should pay for it but do think it should be required. One issue with the schools offering it is the cost
