  1. I don't know the answer to that right off hand. But my guess is that illegals would fair as well or maybe better than many of our own in literacy. And probably better in vocational skills. I'll tell you this...and please know that I'm not condoning it, just passing it along. But most of the employers in the restaurant and construction industries that I come into contact with would much rather employ Mexicans than the lazy and irresponsible of our own. At least the Mexicans show up, they work hard, and tend to have common sense.
  2. Oh, I didn't realize that I never leave Hiram. Thanks for letting me know. Oh, BTW, here are some stats from Huff Post since you prefer left-leaning sources -32 million adults in the US can't read. That's 14% of the population. -21% of adults in the US read below a 5th grade level -19% of high school graduates can't read And it's no better than it was 10 years ago. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/09/06/illiteracy-rate_n_3880355.html Bubble talk? Which one of us is in the bubble now?
  3. First off...80% of the people in the US are not poor. The official number of people under the poverty line is 14.8%, and Forbes says the real number, when you take away Washington's creative math, is about 4.5%. Now...I wish it was zero percent, but much of that is out of my control. Some interesting facts: -More than 20% of the American people are on public assistance -Welfare participation has risen under Obama -We have the lowest labor participation rate since the 70's. Only 62% of adults in our country are working -2.1 million Americans have not been able to get a job for 6
  4. Is that why you perpetuated it by posting the story and picture on your forum?
  5. That's BS. If you knew me in real life, you'd know I associate with people ranging from poor to quite wealthy and I treat them all the same. Read my post again and you'll see that I was making the case that most anyone can work their way up. My only point was that if you want to make more money, do something to be worth it in the marketplace. A person with absolutely no marketable skills is generally only going to have so much value to a perspective employer. And BTW, I'm not a wealthy person. I make a comfortable living, but only because I've worked my butt off for it. There were
  6. You're reaching, pubby. Various levels of government have deeded land, property, and given incentives such as tax breaks since the very beginning. The concept, which usually works out the way it was intended, is to encourage creation of industry, technological development, or just jobs. That is not a redistribution of wealthy, but a cooperative between government and private industry. Which is what the federal government should be doing now (encouraging business growth and job creation) instead of making the environment so dang hostile to business with all kinds of excessive taxation and reg
  7. Just as with building roads, deeding the land for railroad construction was allowed under the interstate commerce clause of the Constitution. Neither building the railroad tracks, or building roads is distribution of wealth. They were simply providing the infrastructure for civilian use and also for free enterprise to use as a means of building business. Using highways is the best example. Yes, we as citizens do "own" the highways. That gives us the privilege of using them. But it doesn't give us the right to a share of the profits Southeastern Freight Lines make from driving their trucks on
  8. So do we rectify that by paying people more than they are worth? Do we reward them for not getting an education or leaning marketable skills? What will that accomplish? What message does it send? The wrong one, I think. Forcing employers to pay people more than they are worth will only perpetuate the problem, and also inflate retail prices for all of us. A better solution would be to offer people a second chance to better themselves. Maybe a program that gives some monetary assistance along with educational benefits. We could even help single moms with child care. But it cannot be a li
  9. I agree about term limits. I wish it wasn't necessary, but it has become so. The example you gave of base closings is a drop in the bucket. Now certainly, we need to save everywhere we can, but it's important for us to see where we really spend the money. This is last year, but the current numbers will still be very close. Military spending, while significant, is only 16% of the total budget. See below. If you add up Social Security, Medicaid, other various entitlements and interest on our debt; that accounts for about 70% of the federal budget. It should also be noted that o
  10. There are other options. Even people working for WalMart can work themselves up the ladder if they take the initiative to do so. WalMart's management gets paid very well. But again...an individual has to show some initiative and be willing to work hard. I've posted here before that I made a lot of poor choices and screwed up my formal education. So guess what? I went to work for a restaurant chain. Three years later I was the second highest paid person in the franchise. Then the owner got a divorce and the ensuing financial disaster caused him to lose some of the stores and let his highest
  11. Wanna make good money? Make yourself valuable in the workplace. Get an education, or just learn a marketable skill. Many people in the constuction trades are making more than college grads right now. But it starts with the individual. Show some initiative and better yourself.
  12. Let me state first off that I almost never shop WalMart. I just don't like to go in there. But fact is that WalMart employs a lot of people whom no one else would hire. Certainly there are exceptions; but most of WalMart's employees are not terribly bright. And they employ a lot of disabled people that would find it hard to get a job elsewhere. This is not Walmart's fault, the market is to blame. If people didn't want it, WalMart wouldn't exist. This whole WalMart hate stuff is yet another means the Democrats use to herd the sheeple. More politics of envy.
  13. First off...congress does not serve the president. It's Constitutional duty is to serve the people. As much as pubby wants it to be; the office of the president is not a dictatorship. The presidency is the executive branch of government, congress is the legislative branch. One does not serve the other, they each fill different roles. It's one of the checks and balances built into our Constitution. Secondly...The actual duty of the House of Representatives of to....get ready for it...here it comes...REPRESENT their constituents. That's why we are a representative republic. So when the preside

  15. That's been happening to him a lot lately.
  16. What they make has absolutely nothing to do with what you make. Envy is not part of the American Dream.
  17. I'm not a wealthy man. But If you want to be successful, you play the game. There's nothing inherently bad or evil sbout corporate America. That's the engine that drives our economy. To not want corporate America to flourish is to wish economic devastation on us all.
  18. I don't think I've used the term "libtard". The other two are just flat out true. You guys are Socialists. And sorry to burst your bubble, but I come from an upper middle class family. I received no economic advantage from family. I came to the Atlanta Area in the late 70's to try and find work because there weren't many jobs where I came from. All I had to my name was a Plymouth Duster and a $600 tax refund. Whatever I am today is because of my hard work and God's Grace. I think it actually offends you that someone can make it on their own without the help of the gover
  19. Nice try, but that doesn't mean it's conservatives receiving the public assistance. The reason for this is because many of those states are poorer, Southern states with large populations of minorities and/or illegals. That's who gets much of the assistance. I'll also note that Hawaii and Maine, also on the list, are not red states. Hawaii is one of the most liberal of all states. So yeah, just Democratic spin.
  20. If you're referring to El Zorro...he served honorably in the Armed Forces. It doesn't matter what position he held or where he was stationed; that's determined mainly by superiors. It takes them all, from the cooks to the guys who fly jets, to make the military function. Neither he, nor any other veteran set up the benefits. That is done much higher up. To accuse him of taking a benefit he doesn't deserve is the same as me saying you shouldn't deduct your mortgage interest on your tax return. It's legal, it's there for a reason. Ummmm, you need to look around here a little more. Bet
