  1. I have had kids in both public school as well as private. Yes, there is a difference in attitude just as there is a difference in schools. Private school students are expected to have more discipline and responsibility to where they can keep up with their own things. Whether or not that is true is a different story. Many public schools tend to pool the supplies and when there is no sense of ownership there is no sense pride or appreciation.

Remember, this is only a generalization, and was not pointed at any specific school.

I understand that you are only being general! Our experience is that in the private Christian school our kids attended the idea of sharing items was the same as public school. The difference in donations was the only thing I saw as a difference besides the references to God.

  2. Several years back at Easter service at Maranatha Baptist I stepped out of service due to a sneezing fit. When I began to go outside I heard a car going up Pine Valley and then behind the church. There is no road back there. ;) You could hear the car hitting the A/C units behind the church and the building itself. I ran around the front to the other side and saw the car coming across the field. As it began to circle counter clockwise back to the church I could see the driver slumped over the wheel. The windows were down and after it hit that side of the church I was able to run and dive into the window as it went around again. I was able to take it out of gear and stop the vehicle with the driver still passed out. Why did all this happen? He had a seizure while driving. It is not their fault they have seizures but it is their fault if they know they are prone to them and continue to drive. <_< This guy could really have hurt someone. He hit the church twice and it could easily have been another driver blissfully driving down the road.

After reading this I have to say you are now one of my "heros". Not many folks would do this and not many would even know what to do! :good: :yahoo: Go Mr. Dis! I think maybe you need a new name..... how about "superman"?? Oh and SW could become "Wonder woman". Hey girl!

  3. Another thing to keep in mind.....electives are the first things to get cut if there isn't enough money in the budget. For example I believe the art teacher last year was given a budget of $100 to get whatever it was she'd need. That was for the entire year, for the whole school.

Elective teachers need stuff too so keep them in mind also :)

Don't think of it as another bill, think of it as doing what you can to be sure that your child has the best chances and is prepared for school.

This is not intended directly at anyone it was just noted from my past experience with schools. When my kids went to private and parents were asked to donate items no matter what the cost no one minded at all and did all necessary to get the materials and to donate them; however, when my kids attended public school anytime a donation of any materials was asked for almost every parent complained. Can anyone explain to me why? I just don't get it.

Yes, as that is what most teachers use all that copy paper for. Solely using textbooks is no longer 'best practices' (not that it ever was, but more people are recognizing that). Teachers go through a buttload of paper making materials that supplement the child's learning. This isn't worksheets for the most part, which is what a lot of people tend to think.

Thank you. Maybe it was a reminder to the teachers from our principal???... My student's homeroom teacher mentioned it to us.

  4. Is anyone else aware that due to budget reasons there is a "paper issue this year". Folks are hearing this at the high school level from teachers. We are told there is a "limited supply of paper available to teachers" and that we should return any forms we do not use.

  5. I have never heard of this either. But I do think it is a wonderful idea. What a wonderful way of letting the child know that they are important and get to know their teacher without a hundred other parents and kids running around.

It did mention that you could sign up for this. Did not sound like it was a demand. Either way, we would be excited and looking forward to the one on one attention.

    IMHO,

    Denise

Do you feel this is a good idea because you realize or see that your son actually needs his teacher? After reading these posts I feel that most parents just don't feel teachers are even necessary. Most of us have advanced training and realize that we need to teach the "whole" child.

  6. I have only read part of the post as of this point. As an up and coming educational professional, a current parent, and past PTA president(2 1/2 years) I would like to say that I have considered home visits and giving my cell phone number to my parents and students. I plan to teach fourth or fifth grade. Parents would be able to contact me for any reason and students can call for homework help or school questions. I remember when I was PTA president and I signed the PTA card it made reference to home/school connections and a student's spiritual life. Now that I am in the process of becoming a teacher I see the importance of parents and teacher "working" together. Not only do I as the parent shape my child, but these teachers that are with these students all day long shape them as well. Sure not in the same ways and sometimes in the same ways. I for one want parents to know that I am here for THEM and THEIR CHILD and that when the doors are open to the school is not the only time I am thinking and working on behalf of their child and my student. Most teachers realize that we need to teach the "whole" student. The more we know about a student the more we are able to help their educational needs. All pyschologist know this as well.

  7. Well, throw in the fact that it screws you up to have money when you are old and we are all in for it! I work in a nursing home where the people coming in obviously NEED the care that we provide, however, most elderly don't have 5000 dollars a month to pay for it. So then, they have to apply for Medicaid. You are allowed only $2000 in liquid assets (cash, money in bank accts, CDs, IRAs, etc) not including ones home (which incidentally, could be taken from your family upon your death by the state) in order to qualify. If you do qualify, the nursing home gets your social security check less $50 a month. THEN, heaven forbid you have a little bit of money, you have to spend it all down before you can qualify...pays to work and save, huh?

This is the similiar situation for folks that are born disabled. Can't get private insurance and to receive Medicaid(what you get when you haven't paid into the system: Medicare when you have) one is not allowed to have more than $2000 in assests this includes your home or care.

  8. GOLF sorry this happened to you. It stinks I know. When I was a young woman of 19 I had this happen to me at a retail store. I had worked in this big chain's children's deparment and was totallly loved by my head of sale and my manager and all the ladies that were associates just like me. The two heads found out that the store was adding a new head of sale and they wanted to put my name in for the position. They did and it was announced in a managerial type meeting that I was the new choosen head of sale; this was even announced in the store after closing. I was to take the position after Christmas. Well this was in October and the store had a season department and needed someone to run this department during the season. I asked the store manager and my managers if it would hurt me to not volunteer for this position. I was told no; however week before Christmas before I was to sit with management this girl that had been in my department for 2 months and the seasonal department for about 2/3 months walked into to my department with a head of sale badge on for my department. She was given the job because of "more experience". Yet I had asked in advance if I needed to volunteer for this position or stay in my department where I had high sales and job responsibilities. I was told to stay in my department and keep being under the training for the position by my manager and head of sale! I worked my fanny off and even worked double shifts in this department and could never get an actual day off when I wanted it. My husband advised me to just resign. So I did and found a better job for more pay, wonderful folks to work for, and job training(which was great since I was sooo young). I moved to an advanced office and accounting firm and learned so much.

This kind of stuff stinks. Hang in there your promotion is coming! Keep up the good work!

  9. There are a lot of people that need to review the driving manuals !!!

    Here's one:

The road in front of my house in this subdivision is not a dirt bike or 4 wheeler track~!!!!

Here's one folks need to be re-trained on! When making a left hand turn into a subdivision on a two lane road(one going in each direction)while also utilizing a blinker; if a car is about to pass my sub turn in I have the right to stop in my lane before making my turn. I do not have to make an unsafe turn directly in the path of an oncoming vehicle because the driver behind me DOES NOT want to have to stop! Geesh! :angry2: :angry2: :angry2:

  10. I can vouch for this Tbar...I almost had to get a mexican in a headlock for stealing a parking space I was waiting on today and I even had my blinker on and everything. After I said a few choice words TO HER I went on my way to find another spot. Their taking over.

We took over so what's the difference. Native Americans were here before us. I hope folks are nicer during this "take over" then White Europeans were in the last "take over".

  11. I know that folks jumped and died because of the the depression and it did effect states diff. I believe that we as American need to stop asking the goverment to help when all they do is TAX US MORE.. I also believe that what ever assistance from the goverment is a type of welfare however you look at it. I think those who have disabilties shoud be the first to benefit from assistance. I believe in FARE TAX! And I want to manage my own retirement why should anyone need to pay capital gains on your own darn money. The government is not helping my wallet. My op. God Bless America.

    :D :D

I have wondered if people consider it welfare when folks retire and receive a check from the government that is supposed to be off the money they paid in.

  12. Because people have blurred the line of what insurance actually is. It is a designed so people can pay a small payment each month and be covered for a much larger amount if the unexpected happens. Insurance companies should not be required to take new customers who they know will be a significant long term expense. If we make this happen it will either tremendously raise the other customers rates or put the insurance companies out of business.

If you wrecked your car you could not get insurance on it later and expect the new company to fix it. It should be different in the medical world.

I understand the rationality behind what you have said; however, because most folks pay for surgeries with insurance the costs of these same surgeries are more expensive for those without insurance so that the insurance company can recoop their cost. Surgical procedures are astronomically over priced so that dr's can get the actual amount they want to perform the surgery. Have a friend who is a physician so I know this to be true. So the nsured and uninsured pay the same astronomical cost for the same surgery except the insured pays the copay while insurance pays the rest and the uninsured pays the whole astronomical amount.

You know at this point and juncture insurance is for any form of medical care from wellness checkups to major illness. Because of this all medical prices are astronimically priced so that doctors can be fully compensated as they feel they should if they didn't up the prices they would be paid very little.

  13. This "What is welfare?

Welfare really has two meanings. In one sense, it refers to all government programs providing benefits to impoverished Americans. The major programs are Medicaid, Food Stamps, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and HUD housing programs. When the public and politicians speak of welfare, they are generally referring to what was Aid to Families With Dependent Children (AFDC) and is now Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF). This cash assistance program is primarily provided to single parents. The TANF program has always been a relatively small part of the overall welfare scheme. To qualify for these programs, individuals must apply and meet income and resource limitations. The HUD and Food Stamp programs are federally funded; the others involve both federal and state funds."

Married couples getting WIC is not Welfare...Welfare to me is for Single Mothers who need extra help..Mainly because deadbeat Dads left them on their own <_<

For those who don't know Medicaid also has a program(known as Katie Beckett/Deeming Waiver) for parents with children who are disabled that would otherwise need fulltime nursing care. Regardless of income level Medicaid(no $$ just govt provided insurance) is given to the disabled child. Guess they figure this is cheaper than nursing care.
