  1. So, I work at a restaurant on 278. On 6/27/15 between the hours of 0430 and 0630, an armed robbery took place at another restaurant, one known for serving burgers and cold drinks made with a mixture of milk and ice cream. Been looking for news or further information regarding said robbery, but haven't found any anywhere. In addition, in the last 6 months, a certain cell-phone store has been robbed not once, but twice, as well as a retail store selling video games. None of them have been on the local news, at least, not that I can tell. All this to say, our little towns here hav
  2. Kudos. You can stand outside cussing about the rain, or you can come in out of it. I don't like not getting paid as much, but you gotta keep the money coming in. So I work. 'Course, I do my share of griping too...
  3. So, a question or three for the PCOM community at large. Here's my situation. I've recently applied for a job with the county. I really, really want this job. I dropped off resume and application on Thursday morning and applications stopped being accepted that evening. How soon should I follow up via phone call? Or should I make an attempt to follow up in person? Additionally, if I did follow up in person, should that be with the Human Resources director, or with the head of the department I was trying to get a job with? Also, would it be inappropriate to, I don't know, say, drop of
  4. I believe we're in an era where employers are in a race to the bottom, as far as wages and compensation are concerned. Various factors are in play, of course; there is no one reason why. Competition from the third world, wildly fluctuating commodity prices, and yes, I'll even throw out the ol' greed card- all these contribute to lower wages and compensation. At the same time, the entitlement mindset is not just a myth, it's reality. Time and again, I've found in my working life, that people my age (34) and younger just don't want to work for their pay. For example: Last year my job
  5. One of my favorite websites, haven't looked in a couple of weeks, though. Good find! Our tax dollars at work!
  6. Wife teaches in Cobb County (we live in Paulding) and they're cutting some 700+ employees there. That's in addition to the 3% pay cut and unpaid furlough days they've introduced. Oh, and the dental and eye insurance is going away, and steep cuts to the medical. Oh, and increased class sizes. Seems to me that when your state ranks 41st in the nation in education, when economic hard times come around, you might want to find somewhere else to trim the fat. Even so, the governor and legislature have cut severely cut funding for the youth who, one would hope, would find ways to grow the sta
  7. The A/C is set at 80 between 5 am and 4 pm, when no one is home. At 4 pm, it switches to 74, until 5 am.
  8. Yeah, see, something's wrong with that picture.
  9. Well, that answers that, I guess. Good to know we're not alone in taking one up the tailpipe. Still, 80% higher in one month? That's a bitter pill to swallow.
  10. I have Greystone Power for my electricity provider (sorry if I'm not allowed to mention the name). We have lived in our house for 2 years, have compact fluorescent lighting in the fixtures we use most, and have a programmable thermostat on the furnace. Our highest summertime electric bill since we've lived here has been $140. Generally, in the summer months, we're around $100-$130. Unfortunately, I just opened the power bill yesterday and they're billing me for $180. For the month of July. Which wasn't all that hot. We have no new appliances, no new residents, and we turn everythi
