  1. Choking Game Fatal To Teens

    POSTED: 12:09 pm EST February 22, 2006

    UPDATED: 12:51 pm EST February 22, 2006

    ATLANTA -- “I guess maybe you're a little curious.

Christen Wrensen remembers playing with friends years ago.

"There's a tingling sensation and you're only actually out for three seconds or so but you feel like you've kinda been dreaming. It’s called the choking game or the pass out game.

And the concept is scary; kids choking each other for what they think is a quick high.

“As you take your hand away you get this rush of blood going up to your head and that's what really gets you the sensation of the high," says Dr. Theresa Rohr-Kirchgraber of the Emory Clinic.

She says that even more troubling; kids today are increasingly playing it alone.

Many are using belts and ropes to help.

"Things that they can't loosen fast enough to get the blood supply back," says Rohr-Kirchgraber.

She says it can cause permanent damage or worse, "the result can be death, stroke, coma, brain cells die."

While there are no exact numbers news stories from across the country show children choking themselves from California to New Hampshire.

    Even right here in Georgia.

Theresa Bell says she never heard of the choking game.

Her 15-year old son, Stuart, was a typical teenager.

“He loved to play outside he enjoyed sports, soccer, baseball," says Bell

Three years ago Stuart was found in his home with a rope around his neck.

His parents believe his death was not intentional, but instead a few minutes of what he thought was fun, that ended with horrible results.

“Now that I have listened to some of the news reports I just realize that Stuart was a risk taker he liked thrills he liked doing things on the edge that it would've definitely matched his personality to be involved," says Bell.

She says she didn't see any warning signs, and like any parent she's left with too many questions.

"It just causes so much sadness" adds Bell.

Experts say parents need to be concerned if their child has bloodshot eyes, headaches, or marks on their neck.

Parents should also be on the lookout for belts, leashes or ropes tied in knots or found in unusual places.

And kids seeming disoriented after spending time alone.

Dr.Rohr-Kirchgraber says talking to your kids takes away the mystery and teaches them this is no game.

"It may not happen the first time it may not happen the twentieth time but it can happen at anytime," she says.

As she gets ready to graduate from college, Christen now says she can't believe she took such a risk.

She urges kids to really think about what they're doing.

“Think about the rest of your life and don't throw it away for five seconds of being high."

  2. How much does this cost?

WE visited Santa and Mrs. Claus at there house last night. I asked my 4 year old if she wanted to go and she replied "all the way at the north pole?" I had to explain that no this was his house while he was here going back and forth to the malls everyday, and that the elves are at the north pole getting everything ready for sat. nite and that the elves will bring the sleigh back for santa on sat.

Anyways this is a house in hickory Flat in Canton, These people are amazing!!!!! They do this because they enjoy it. Here is the link, and you have got to go visit them. santa is so great with the children, he spends so much time with them!!!

  3. Thanks Katie :)

I had made a promise to myself that I was going to stick to "if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all" when it came to p.com but I just couldn't help myself today!

And if I didn't say so earlier.. Thumbs up to you RadioMan, as a mom who makes her living off big events.. please everyone.. throw a parade, rent out half (or all of Atlanta) to celebrate whatever floats your boat...my kids aren't getting any cheaper to raise!!!!!

No thank you :-) I had said the same thing myself, but sometimes, I just have to say what I am thinking, I am a single Mother of 3 teens, and try my best to have them accept everyone, no matter what color, sexuality etc, and nope, not getting any cheaper to raise them !

  4. Man do we have some closed minded folks in PC still... I thought we had outgrown some of our backward ways...

Lear started this out as a positive thread and all it took was a few narrow minded people to send it down the drain...

cherry9393... Are you 12 years old? You act it. Lear did nothing to provoke you.

I agree, and even the homosexuals deserve to have some fun sometimes, there arent many ways they can have fun, I mean, they are not accepted anywhere hardly, ya know? especially here in Paulding, I have many gay/lesbian friends, and do try my best to be supportive and include them in everything possible :-)

  5. The sexual orientation of their money is the same as mine. Who cares if they throw a parade or festival? They don't recieve government funds to do so, and the amount of money that is spent on police control etc. is far outweighed by the amount of money they bring in.

To all you lefties (handers): Throw a parade and festival...please. The more money the better.

    :)

Thumbs up to you :-) I always say, I mind my business, you mind yours, I dont care what others do, as long as it isnt harming me or mine, I have enough problems keeping "me and mine" out of trouble lol ..... and Lord knows the economy needs the boost financially right now, hmmmm and sure seems to be alot of anger on this board, kinda scary, coming from the county I live in :-(

  6. I'm just trying to figure out what they are proud of.

Just my opinion, but maybe proud that they have found their soulmate? Or proud that they have finally figured out who they are, some people go through life thinking something is wrong with them, that they are different from others, only to find out that they are gay. Just a thought :-)
