  1. Anyone know much about this project? From the Pcom fastread page it looks like the 1096 home development will go to zoning and planning next month.

Is there still time to make an impact on slowing this project? I thought Commision Chairman was looking to slow PRDs.

I would like to see the area infrastructure catch up before more growth is planned for this area.

  2. arrowhead,

I encourage you to become part of the solution - call or write Sgt. Pat Banks at the Sheriff’s department and request one of the four traffic enforcement cars be sent to patrol the road.

Then, call the State Patrol, Post 3, in Cartersville and ask them for further patrols on the road.

Support a full budget for the Sheriff's department. Support the candidate for Sheriff that you feel will take the department to the next level.

  3. I would suggest that you write the county commission and ask them to support a full budget for the Sheriff. Then, they might be able to afford more that 4 patrol cars equipped for traffic enforcement.

I decided to also support the candidate for sheriff that I feel has the best chance of bring the SD into the next phase of growth - Ken Ball. He has experience gaining federal funding that I think is the key to the growth of the sheriff's department.

I grew up in North Carolina. There, speeding is directly tied to your insurance rates and Troopers are always visible. Do they have fewer accidents up there? I don't know, but the flow of traffic sure is slower.

  4. There are 7 layers to wireless security. For the average user, disabling SSID broadcasts, enabling WEP, and also enabling MAC address filtering is the best that they can do.

All these can be hacked with a little effort. To be truly secure, you must enable VPN encryption from the wireless device to the access point.

My firm enabled this type of security for the ATF. Their network is one of the few that is truly secured.

Normally, a user will enable the AP on the private side of the firewall. This is a backdoor that many people don't consider.

  5. So, the location of the ambulances has been established. Still, I will have poor response to my end of the county. After discussions with the State as well as the Paulding Director of Public Safety, there are two solutions that I can see. The each deal with budgets, controlled by the county commission. Therefore, it is appropriate for this forum.

    1) Clark and the county come to an agreement on a subsidy. This would allow the county to determine what type of response times it would be required to have in the county.

    2) Fully fund the fire department and have more than one person at the station (in my case station 6.) This second person would also be an EMT. This should be the first goal of the FD as well as the county. Long-range goals would then include a paramedic at stations, and then bring ALS (advance life support) capabilities to all stations. This, to me, seems to be the best solution for better service and level of immediate care for the remote ends of the county.

The level of care provided by the FD is probably many years away. I hope that each of you will voice your opinions to the commission. Hopefully, the commission will stop, take a breath, and see that the rapid growth experienced over the past several years needs to be slowed, while the county infrastructure (road, FD, Sheriff’s department, etc.) catches up.

  6. 72bcr & Canyon Ridge Gal, I started this thread because I have a genuine concern. I have had first hand experience (3 times) with poor response to my home by Clark. Coming from Cobb, where an emergency call would be responded to by 8 men and 3 vehicles, I assumed that Paulding, being a metro Atlanta county, would have similar manpower and equipment. Over the past 3 years I have realized that Paulding is still a rural, but growing county. It is important to me to have proper and safe emergency care for my family. I will support the fire department and the director of public safety to gain full funding for the FD. Hopefully one day station 6 will be fully staffed and have a paramedic.

After further investigation, this appears to be squarely in the hands of the county commission. Either via budget restraints and not giving the director of public safety full staffing requests or due to lack of a subsidy agreement with Clark.

That is why I want to know what the currently running politicians can/will do about this issue. If you don't have anything constructive to add, please move on.

    .

  7. 72bcr,

Clark’s ambulance paramedic (I am serviced by the unit in Dallas) brings with it the ability to inject drugs. The EMT on the rescue at the station that services me from station 6 offers basic life support. What if you require some type of injectable drug in order to handle a breathing problem? What if you need transport immediately? The 20-25 minutes that my area has to wait is too long. I will support the fire department to gain additional manpower and training. Hopefully, one day additional personnel and a paramedic will be stationed at all the remote firehouses.

Or, I guess I could just move back to Cobb County....

  8. I spent some time on the phone with David Loftin, the NW GA Region I EMS coordinator for the State of Georgia.

Clarks Ambulance service is a private, for-profit business. No one has any oversight in regards to response times or the number of units they have serving the county. Mr. Loftin simply makes sure that Clarks has the minimum capabilities (3 personnel and 1 unit.)

Mr. Loftin proposed two solutions to my problem, which is poor response to NE Paulding from the Clarks unit stationed at Paulding Fire Station #1.

    1) Have the county offer subsides to Clarks. This would give the county power to require an agreed upon service level by Clarks including the number of units and where they are stationed. Mr. Loftin said that there have been negotiations in the past between Clarks and the county commission, but neither side could come to an agreement.

    2) Have an EMT on every moving vehicle in the fire department. In addition, add a Paramedic to the rescue units. These units can then provide transport in the case were Clarks is delayed. Having a Paramedic added to Station #6, Rescue Truck #6 solves my problem of poor response, since the station is 6 miles from me. This seems to be the best solution for the rural stations.

I encourage all reading this post to make this a high campaign issue.

So, candidates, my question to each of you is: If elected, how will you improve ambulance response times to the more rural areas of the county?

  9. Mr. Ball,

I hope that you didn't take offence to my "wind down your career..." statement. I was looking from the side of "why would a major league player want to come play in the minors in Paulding County?" You answered that for me.

I, too, only want to have the finest department serving the community.

Thanks, and good luck in the election.

  10. Mr. Ball,

Thanks for your reply. After I posted my question, I visited your web site. I see that one of your goals addresses my concerns.

Do you know if budget restraints have kept more patrol cars from being fitted with traffic enforcement capabilities? If elected, what type of timeframe do you see before more than 4 cars are traffic enforcement capable?

Why is the State Patrol required to write accident reports? Are they only required for accidents on state highways? Why are the current Deputies not writing accident reports? Is there some type of liability that the county will have to assume once they begin this duty?

As a former Marietta resident, I have to ask myself why you would want to become sheriff of Paulding County. I know this is a loaded question and I am not putting the Sheriff’s department down in anyway. The Marietta PD is one of the finest in the state. Are you beginning to wind down your career with a final stop as Sheriff?

    Thanks again.

  11. Mr. Chairman,

Can you tell me if the county in any way has a determining voice in where Clark stations its Paramedic/Ambulance units?

I understand that Clark is only stationed at three areas in the county. I live in the NE corner of the county and have seen as long as 45-minute response times from the unit in Dallas. Of course, this was due to heavy fog, but there are ways to accommodate for traffic, weather, etc. (have a unit closer....)

Can you help me find out who determines how these units are located?

    Thanks.

  12. I would like to know future plans for increasing the number of traffic enforcement units available in the county. My understanding is that there are only 4 patrol cars equipped for speed detection (this info came from a Deputy.)

Is this a priority to either candidate?

Also, why is the State Patrol required to write many simple traffic accident reports? From the State Patrol Post Commander in Cartersville I understand that many times there is only one Trooper assigned to the entire county!

    Thanks for your comments.
