  1. I have to agree. My personal preference would be for a different approach to the school calendar. I'm not a big fan of these early August starts and all the weeks off.

That said, I am reticent to suggest that such a preference should be written into law. I think it is a risky move to put a law in place that makes it impossible to accommodate circumstances that might make an early-start calendar the very best solution... except that it would be illegal. What circumstances are those? I don't know, but stuff happens. And the same stuff doesn't happen in Savannah that happens in Dallas that happens in Valdosta that happens in Commerce.

I am open to hearing the arguments... but my initial take is... go to your school board meetings and argue your case there instead of in Atlanta.

Amen - vote the local board out if you don't like their decisions. That said - I don't use the government schools and would like my tax dollars back please :)

  2. The idea that people are always thinking rationally is a fallacy.

She didn't think. She made a mistake. She should not have left the baby in the car.

I do think that it was a mistake based on the practical impossibility of her being able to handle the dog and the baby and the two other children at the same time. She got the dog into the vet's office and was probably 'engaged' by the receptionist who told her to sit down and keep her dog and the vet will be with her in a minute.

In her circumstance, she would have had to bring the dog into the vet, TELL the receptionist to keep an eye on the two young kids and dog and immediately go get the baby.... and of course if she had been so 'assertive' she might have run into an equally assertive 'receptionist' who could have slapped her down and told her to sit with her dog and shut up.

I really think in a lot of cases folks need a little help but society discourages it and unless the good Samaritan is there to lend a hand, mistakes of this kind are made. I do think that a kinder and gentler society that encourages more cooperation and less stoic independence would probably eliminate many of these kinds of 'lapses.'

Making excuses for stupidity - real nice. Mistakes are something done unintentionally. This was not a mistake, she made a conscience decision to leave the kid in the car. They should lock her in a hot car and televise it.

  3. If the guy moved into the subdivision before 2005, the HOA rules would be grandfathered in. I like what crazy4boys said too. "Reasonable restrictions." A compromise was offered.

The same HOA rules that would keep an American flag from flying also keep Confederate Flags from flying, thank God. Or Nazi flags, something a lot of our Adolf Type Republicans here in Paulding would just luuuuuuv to do. Bet they would get all tingly in their groin when they see the swastika flying, thinking about all the people they could control by force as they dismantle the Constitution.

You should take a little time and do some HONEST research into the background of the current democrat party. You will find that it has many ties to 1930's era leaders such as Hitler, Stalin, and Mussolini. Of course that would require a little intellectual honesty on your part, doubtful you are capable of this.

  4. Technically they could try to say that the more restrictive ordinance/law/whatever would prevail. However, based on the fact that we have the Freedom to Display the American Flag Act of 2005, I think the HOA will be paying some attorney's fees on this one. That would be a no-brainer IMHO.

Not so fast - I think if you read the law, it says that the HOA can reasonably restrict the display. By saying that he has to display it from a pole attached to his house, they are not saying he can not display, just how he can display.

  5. A few phrases for the bammer faithful to take to heart:

    Serious offense.

    Repeat violator.

Within the 5 year window of last infraction.

Staring down the barrel of the gun.

"God forbid they ever appear before this committee again"

Sorry, I've gotta go pop some popcorn, because this could get very interesting. :D

  6. I learned when I was 9 years old that in snow and ice, southerners do not know how to drive. Although the news channels made for great entertainment :p

That's funny. I guess the news clips I always see of snow in the north / midwest / west with car wrecks are clips of people from the south driving on roads up north and out west. The more accurate statement Hoshi is the "most people do not know how to drive on snow and ice"

  7. Hubby called on his way home from work with the news he heard on the radio. I googled it and that is the first subject under "Tommy Tuberville".

WOW...........reckon Petrino will leave Auburn in middle of the night like he did the Falcons???????? Reckon he has told Arkansas yet????? LOLOLOLOLOLOL.

BTW, I had predicted Tuberville's days were numbered BEFORE the humiliating loss to Alabama!!!

(and I was asked if I kept up with Auburn?? LOL)

Let me get this straight, the revolving door of coaches is laughing at AU for firing our coach? That's really funny. By the way, AU fans really are not concerned with what other fans think of the move. We'll argue about it amongst ourselves, but we really could care less what you think.

  8. I don't like to redistribute my wealth.

Jerry - We love to redistribute our wealth. It is a great blessing to share what we have been blessed with, with those who need help. What I do not like is the government redistributing it for me.

  9. No way. We =must= keep the electoral college.

The founding fathers wanted popular sentiment but they also saw the excesses of those Enlightenment Principles in France with the Reign of Terror. They saw first hand what mob rule can do, an opportunist can do with emotional appeal to the masses, etc. Thus they set up the electoral college so cooler heads can keep heads from rolling. The common people were not trusted by the Founding Fathers as neither competent nor willing to do the right thing. An electoral college gives a time of reflection whereby the popular vote can be recalled, if needed, by the leaders elected locally.

No way should we do away with the electoral college. That is the last safeguard in our Constitution that prevents an opportunist like Hitler from taking over.

Unless you have a citizenry that is easily manipulated by the media into believing a marxist is not a marxist.

We need to restrict who votes based on (1) knowledge of how our Constitution intended for our governement works and (2) how much you contribute to the federal money pot. There is no way that the vote of a wellfare breed mare should count as much as mine.

  10. Somebody's feeling old and bitter today. There's no reason to believe that college students shouldn't vote unless you're jealous of their greater potential for success. If you're in construction, you might have been working for me while I was still in college and, surprise, paying taxes. Oh yeah, I was voting too.

No not old, and not bitter. Just not real keen on the idea of someone who pays little or nothing in income taxes having a say in how much I pay by voting for someone who wants to "spread the wealth around". If you are "contributing" to the pot of wealth, you have no business deciding on how it's spread. And I also have a problem with that same un-taxed person having the opportunity to vote for the other party as well.

Unless you are paying income taxes - you should not vote. There should also be a basic test that you have to pass in order to be able to vote.

  11. If this girl even has a part-time job, which that detail is not included, she is paying taxes and thus has the right to vote.

I do not subscribe to either party, do not want affiliate myself with either. But I do like to put others before myself.

I'm getting a history degree. Really. Cause frankly, I in this degree field to do some good. We have to know where we have been in order to know where we are going, historians do that. They also analyze certain events certain time periods, and find out what went wrong and hopefully, are in a job in which to fix it. That is what I am going to do. Now, if you don't think a history degree will make me a successful, productive member of society, please enlighten me as to what degree I should be getting.

If she works part time, I doubt she has much if any income tax liability.

If you truly study the past, maybe you'll learn that socialism does not work and you can teach WT that history lesson. With a history degree, you'll likely end up teaching in a governement school. I have no problem with someone deciding to get a degree in something like history - just don't complain once you get a job about how you don't make enough money.

  12. Ok, Walking Tall directed me to this post, because he knows I am in college. I am currently a senior in college. I own a house. I own property. I pay income taxes. So why should I not be allowed to vote? Simply because I am in college. Dear sir, pull your head out of your rear end and wake up please. Not everyone is in the same situation. But as long she is 18, she is the right to vote and that right will never be taken away.

Read my original comment - you do not fit what I described as someone who should not be qualified to vote. If you do in fact own a home and pay taxes (this means you send the money in and do not get it back after filing your tax return), then you would qualify as someone who should be able to vote. Age has nothing to do with it - what you contribute to the governement pocket book does. Hoepfully you are applying yourself and getting a degree in something that will enable you to be a productive successful member of society. Of course you better be careful, if you become too successful, WT and his type will want to "spread" your wealth around.
