  1. Hi Lea - I'm sorry you're having a tough time with it. I did do tamoxifen for five years, with hot flashes and weight gain. I didn't have the temperature changes you're having though. There's another drug now - Remafen ? I think. It's supposed to have less side effects than tamoxifen. I was told when I started it, it takes about a month to acclimate to it. When you stop taking it, it stays in your system for three weeks. Definitely call your doctor and discuss. I did feel the benefits were worth it, since my tumor was estrogen positive and it shuts down the receptors. Don't ever hesitate to call me - work or not - it's a tough trip, and you're doing great. Some days are just hard, and that's what friends are for. Let's talk tomorrow for sure...

  2. I had breakfast there this week, and it was very good - service was good also. My husband and I went this morning, and their morning waitress had walked out on them. They were working very hard to take care of everyone and very apologetic. We didn't mind the wait, and several women were filling out applications for work on the spot. This is a new venture by a young couple and will probably have a few "bumps" getting started. But the food was good, and they had the right attitude. They may have underestimated the crowd - but should iron out the problems soon. Being a small business owner myself, I always want the give new businesses a chance - especially when they're locally owned.

  3. I'll start a thread on the Cancer Chat and ask if folks are signing up... And if you decide to do this, I'll send you a donation. It's really an event like no other.

Celeste makes a great point - Many corporations use breast cancer support for marketing, and I don't have a problem with that BUT if the companies sell products with toxins in them you have to wonder about the real intention. Their are some corporate watchdog groups taking this on... I need to google around and get their websites. If you hear "the funds go to research", it's valid to question that comment further. I have products in my shop that donate, and I watch for the disclosures from the vendor. I will say many corporations are usually really involved - with their own employees, insurance benefits, etc. Just like anything else you have to be cautious.

  4. I've done the 3 Day twice, and let me shed some light here. The concept of this fundraiser is commitment - and it's tough. From the fundraising to slogging it out for a 60 mile walk, it's a huge commitment. But it's not "take your money and run" - it raises vast amounts for research, and the books are available if you're worried about where it goes. The event is tiring and emotional in the physical challenge, but the crowds who cheer you on know your commitment. You pass schools holding posters, people who decorate their yards for you, vehicles honk and cheer - this goes on for the duration of the challenge. If you don't want to make this commitment, the 2 Day that's been posted is a great option. Or heck, don't forget the Relay - there are tons of ways to help out the cause. The 3 Day was very memorable for me, having survived. But the respect needs to be paid to this event, because women are living longer than ever due to big fundraisers such as this one.

  5. 12 years ago today my mom died of breast cancer. Some of you may remember her.....she taught 6th grade at Herschel Jones Middle School and was loved dearly by her students. It was a Friday and it snowed that morning (after school had started). They started sending everyone back home and the kids were all saying that "Mrs. Kruse made it snow". I miss her so much and think of her every day.

Don't forget to get those mammograms, ladies

I lost my Mom to breast cancer also - she taught the 4th grade and was loved by her students as well. I also lost my grandmother and aunt to the disease... and am diagnosed myself but surviving for 12 years. How wonderful your Mom touched lives and will be remembered always - As for you, keep a check but here's an important statistic... only 25% of breast cancer diagnoses have a family member who had the disease. That means 75% of diagnoses have no family member!!! So for others reading this - don't fall into complacency regarding self checks, and mammograms (as stated above). I'm writing this as a tribute to your Mom, and all the Moms out there who have touched our lives and fight breast cancer.

My heart is with you -

  6. As a valentines gift to myself and my hubby I have put down cigarettes today. No more smoking for me. The hard part is that mentally I want to stop but my urges are already kicking in. I can't chew gum so what are some things I can do for these urges?

All I can add here is "way to go"! And it's wonderful that you and your hubby are quitting together. It's so much harder when your spouse/roommate continues to smoke. Smoking not only affects your lungs, it affects your whole body. Years ago, when I went thru chemo the nurses were very interested in whether or not I smoked. They said chemo isn't as effective if you do. And I met more lung cancer patients in chemo than breast cancer patients. So congratulations, and to all posting on this thread that have put them down.

  7. I changed over to the Mac from PC years ago, and we have Macs at our store that run Parallels. Our insurance billing software requires IE so we run Windows when we have to - on our Macs. As for price, you can get a loaded Mac for under $1000. We did - And if you haven't been to a Mac store - it's a great experience. (I can't go without buying something, so I'm glad they're a drive...)

  8. My prayers are with you and your family - I have a brother stationed in Iraq now. He retired as a Colonel and signed back up after 2 tours. He is so dedicated to his mission. We are blessed to have such courageous men and women preserving our freedom. May God Bless...

  9. I have a list of groups that will help anyone uninsured that is newly diagnosed with cancer. Send me a pm with your info and I'll get the list to you. There are actually quite a few organizations that can help. You do need to check it out as soon as possible. It could be nothing, but if it is a tumor it needs to be dealt with as soon as possible. Let me know,

    Anita

  10. My name is Anita Kennerley and I'm a 12 year survivor. I recently opened a shop in Hiram for women facing cancer treatment called PAK in Pink. I am a certified mastectomy fitter, carry many bras, wigs, skincare, hats, turbans, medical alert bracelets. I welcome any women facing the journey - and you don't have to buy anything, you can just come and chat. The shop is designed to be very private and comfortable. Sometimes you just need to talk to someone who's been through it. I had no choice but mastectomy, had chemo, Tamoxifen for 5 years. You can visit our website, www.pakmedical.com or call me at 770-222-6678. Just remember - take it one day at a time. You'll be fine.
