  1. The only problems my kids seem to be having (and they are girls, btw) is getting their Myspace sites hacked by their friends, every so often when one of them gets pissed off about whatever. I routinely check their sites, and I haven't come across any of the horrible things brought up by the OP....thank God!! Just a bunch of teenage girls scuffling with each other...one day they're best friends, and the next, they're not...then on again, off again.

Excellent point.... This is a growing problem and concern. The online activity that you just described has become known as "cyberbullying." Cyberbullying can and has led to bigger problems at school and in the social lives of our children. That will also be dicussed in more detail at this summit.

  2. My kids are just now getting old enough to get on the computer. I need a head start. But Hubby won't get home until around 7. How often are you doing this? Any weekends?

We do not have plans at this time to offer a large scale presentation like this on a regular basis. We do speak in neighborhood watch meetings, church groups, schools, and other gatherings about cyber safety when invited and asked to give information about this topic.

For this event there will be representatives from the Georgia Bureau of Investigations Internet Crimes Against Children unit, Keep Georgia Safe, Paulding County Sheriff's Office, and others to speak on different topics. You will also hear from two different local families whose lives were changed forever when their children became victims of "dangerous online activity."

Although smaller scale presentations may be made available in the future, a presentation of this magnitude may not be available for some time.

  3. I wanted to let everyone know that the report that was made to PCSO is being followed up on by our Crimes against Children unit. Although highly suspicious, there is nothing to suggest at this time that the intentions of the suspicious male were malicious.

"Stranger Abductions" are rare; however, this remains a very real threat that we should remain very aware and cautious of in order to better protect our families. I will of course send out any relevant information that needs immediate public attention regarding this incident.

You may want to use this as a reminder to talk to your children about the appropriate responses when approached by a stranger.

  4. The Paulding County Sheriff's Office did receive word that a firearm was to be brought to South Paulding High School today. There has NOT been a shooting at South Paulding High School or any other school in Paulding County.

Additional deputies from our School Resource Office are on the scene at South Paulding High School. They have been investigating the rumor. They have not uncovered any evidence to suggest that a firearm was ever brought to the school. The investigation suggests at this point that the information is simply a victim of the "rumor mill." However, we take this type of information very seriously. Additional deputies will remain on the scene throughout the remainder of the day as a precaution and to help control the rumors that are circulating thru the campus.

Please be assured that the situation is under control, and we will always take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of the children in our community.

  5. Interesting blurb in this recent "bust" article, about how apparently so many people in Georgia do this, they only went after "the worst offenders". Also makes for an interesting discussion about how when you allow your teens to keep computers in their rooms and use them with no supervision, what can potentially happen: http://www.11alive.com/news/local/story.as...44&catid=40

This sounds like a good time to remind everyone of the Cyber Safety Summit coming up in April. I have included the link below to the information about the summit. The suspects that were caught accessing these illegal images are the ones that made the news. However, let's not forget that there are very real victims, children, involved in these cases. These victims were someone's child, grandchild, or close loved one.

Our goal is to prevent the children in our community from becoming victims of these types of exploitation or other similar crimes. Children become very vulnerable during certain stages of "growing up." They are looking for acceptance or someone to relate to. That is how they sometimes easily fall victim to "online predators" seeking out children.

Learn more about online exploitation as well as other dangers at the 2009 Cyber Safety Summit in April.

  6. MONDAY NIGHT SUMMIT REVIEWS

    Attention Neighborhood Watch members:

I wanted to thank those of you who took time to come to the Cyber Safety Summit last night. I look forward to seeing and meeting more of you Wednesday night at East Paulding High School. We received a lot of positive feedback after the summit as well as emails. I feel like that this summit has already made the impact that we hoped it would make. I mentioned last night that we as law enforcement will not be able to stop crime from taking place. However, when a partnership between local law enforcement and the citizens in the community is built a significant impact on crime can be made for that area. This summit is just another step and tool being used to build and improve that relationship and partnership with the citizens of Paulding County. Hopefully, the information that we are able to provide you with will allow you to engage your children or grandchildren in conversations about the potential dangers on the internet.

I apologize to last night’s crowd that we were not able to offer the “live chat” session with an Internet Crimes Against Children detective. This session would have allowed you to see how quickly potential predators begin trying to “chat” with the child on the internet…..(potentially) YOUR CHILD! Hopefully, we will have the problems corrected by Wednesday night so that we can provide that live chat session for the members in attendance. You will be shocked at how quickly adults begin to engage the minor in conversation in an attempt to exploit them.

I wanted to thank the members that have sent emails expressing their appreciation for the summit and how important they felt that it was that more parents and families receive the intended message. I have included five of the emails below. There is still room for you to RSVP for Wednesday night’s session to confirm your seating. However, it is not required that you RSVP to attend.

    Cpl. Brandon Gurley

    Email 1:

My husband & I attended the Cyber Safety Summit Monday (4/27) at the Paulding Co High School.

WOW! This was a VERY informative event and we are so glad we took the time to attend. I would love to encourage you to attend the Cyber Safety Summit @ East Pauding if you did not attend Monday night (4/27). It will be well worth your time!!

We were informed on things that absolutely gave us a wake up call. Sometimes we just think we have it all together, and nothing like these things will ever come home to us...I know from experience that none of us are exempt from tragedy. May I encourage you to take a couple of hours to find out what your children/grandchildren may be involved in.

Thanks to our law enforcement officers and other community workers that took the time after being on their jobs all day to share this most valuable information to the public. It's public education like this that may prevent a heartache to a family while possibly preventing the death of a loved one. Thank you so much for sharing.

    Email 2:

    Corporal Gurley:

You guys did a great job tonight. As I told Sheriff Gulledge, you have started something good here, and I hope to see it spread like wild fire. I have nine and eleven year old daughters, and I don't want to see their lives impacted by any of the things that we heard tonight. Thank you for putting the summit together. Paulding County needs to hear the message.

    Email 3:

    Brandon,

I would like to echo the responses that you have already received and say what a great job everyone did last night at the Cyber Safety Summit. I hope that the word will continue to spread and together, as a community, we can begin to educate both parents and children alike on potential dangers of the internet and of dangerous games our children are playing such as the “choking game”.

I also wanted to see if there’s any way you could send me one of the packages that were distributed after the meeting. Unfortunately, I had to leave before the end so I was unable to pick one up.

    Email 4:

I attended the Cyber Summit last night and will attend the one at East Paulding High on Wednesday evening at 7. I urge you to attend. Please forward this email to everyone in your address book that has children. The danger is real and it only takes a couple of hours of education to combat it!!

    Email 5

Thank you so much for putting this summit together. While I knew about online dangers and had heard about some of the dangerous games kids were playing, it didn’t hit me how serious these problems are until hearing the firsthand, local experiences last night. What courage and love it took for those dads to share their stories and I know they will save lives.

Please keep continuing your outreach into our community by hosting these summits. Hopefully, participation will continue to grow. We are all better parents and our kids are much safer when we are informed.

    Thank you!

  7. COPS FOR KIDS

    9TH ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT

    cops4kidslogo.JPG

The Paulding County Sheriff's Office is gearing up for the 9th Annual Cops for Kids golf tournament . All of the proceeds are used to provide Christmas and other needs throughout the year for the less fortunate children of Paulding County. We have a shopping day in December and employees from the Paulding County Sheriff's Office take these children with a designated amount of money (depending on donations) to let them pick what they want for Christmas. This program has been successful through donations from local businesses and individuals like you. In 2008 we were able to take approximately 275 children shopping and spent approximately $41,500.00.

If you are not a golfer but are interested in helping, you can sponsor a hole for $100.00 (tax deductible). This is a great opportunity for commerce members of Paulding.com. We also need contributions for door prizes and goody bags. This is an easy way for you to help contribute to a good cause and get a little advertising for your business. Last year the tournament brought in over $22,000.

If you have any questions about the golf tournament, you can contact Maj. Tom Murphy or Melanie Palmer at 770-443-3015. All checks can be mailed with the attached flyer to 247 Industrial Way N., Dallas, Georgia 30132, Attention - Maj. Tom Murphy.

Attached: I have included a copy of the flyer with all of the information about the tournament as well as the Cops for Kids logo for your use.

  8. First of all, I am shocked to see how this post has lead to such speculations and questions about the professionalism and ethics of the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office. I haven’t yet read a post on this thread that actually had knowledge or information about what happened. I want to take a minute to explain this very brief encounter so that the inquiring minds can rest assured that their tax dollars were used properly.

The deputy was traveling eastbound on Hwy. 278 in the area of Overlook subdivision when he observed the two four wheelers cross the four lane highway. He stopped the two ATVs and found that one of them was being operated by a juvenile. He educated the father on the traffic laws that prohibit driving four wheelers on the roadway. Furthermore, the deputy knew the long term effect that the citation would have on the juvenile if he cited him for driving while unlicensed. The citation could prohibit the juvenile from obtaining a driver’s license once he turned 16. He released them with a warning and sent them home with instructions to stay off of the roadway. He did stop traffic on the highway so that they could safely cross back over to return home. You see, once the deputy stopped them and instructed them to cross back over and return home, he felt responsible for their safety. He wanted to make sure that the father and son made it safely back to the other side of the highway.

The deputy did enforce the law. He encountered illegal activity and he took action. He stopped it from continuing and educated them as to the dangers and legal aspects of riding ATVs on the roadway. Some of you ask if this will lead to a repeat offense since the deputy did not issue a citation. We encounter people everyday for offenses such as speeding. Many times we find that the driver has previous citations for the same offense. Why did the citations not stop that person from becoming a “repeat offender?” A citation does not guarantee that a person will not offend again. This officer used his training and experience in dealing with people to determine the most effective way to stop and correct this illegal act.

I hate to see that one of our deputies ethics were questioned while performing his duty. I hope that this clears up all of the speculations that this was some sort of “good ole boy” act and that the people on the four wheelers must have known the sheriff or the deputy. That is in no way the case.

Oh yea… to the person(s) on the four wheelers. Be very thankful for your warning. This deputy normally doesn’t issue too many warnings.

  9. I agree; it seemed a bit overkill unless the "golden goose" was stolen. ;)

    ]

Let me clarify for you before your speculations lead to further rumors. The suspect (later identified as a minor) fled the scene when the suspect spotted the complainant/witness.

When deputies arrived, they began searching the area for the suspect as well as interviewing witnesses. The investigation quickly led to identifying the suspect and locating the suspect as their residence. The suspect was seen by witnesses fleeing with an arm full of items from the burglarized home (including firearms). So, the detectives were searching the woods for the items that were stolen but not recovered at the suspect's house. We thought that it was very important to recover the firearms before other children found them playing in the area.

I hope this clears things up for you. This person deserves his or her day in court. We will not be releasing all of the details until that time to ensure that this person receives a fair trial. There are no further dangers present in your neighborhood. We have not seen an increase in violent crime there. Burglaries and other juvenile delinquent acts always go up throughout the county during the time periods when school is out.

  10. It appears that the site is temporarily down. Continue checking backing periodically to see if it is working. I am told that the "kinks" should be worked out by Friday.

I am sorry for the inconvenience. Thank you for you patience.

  11. I wanted to let everyone know that there is NO need to call the sheriff's office to make a report if you have recently paid by credit or debit card at this restaurant. We only ask that you call to make a report if you have fraudulant or questionable charges on your statements appearing after using your card at Fiesta Azteca.

We have been flooded with phone calls by people who want to make a report before the fraudulant charges appear. It is possible that your card may not be jeapordized even if you used it at the establishment. Again, just keep a close eye on your bank and credit card statements for questionable charges.

In reference to the membership being denied to the Neighborhood Watch website. There will be a couple of questions that you will have to answer when you attempt to join. This is required to help prevent the electronic spammers from accessing the site. I will assume the membership request is an electronic spammer if the questions are not answered and deny the request.

  12. The Paulding County Sheriff's Office was made aware of this situation last night. School Resource Officers (deputies with PCSO) were at the juveniles home before the start of school this morning. The juvenile will not be attending school today.

We take all allegations of this type very serious. Children should be able to attend school without fear of this type of violence. We will do everything possible to make sure that they are able to do that. We had two choices this morning once we were made aware of this "threat". We could have waited for the juvenile at school or we could go to the child's house in order to stop any such action from taking place. As mentioned, we went to the house and met with the juvenile there.

I wanted to put any fears or concerns at rest. This matter has been dealt with and the person will not be attending school today.

  13. A Memorial Service for Corporal Mick Davis will be held at Clark Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, November 5th at 11:00 a.m. In compliance with the family’s wishes, the body of Corporal Mick Davis was cremated. The final funeral service will be held later in the week in his home state of Arkansas.

There will be a motorcade prior to the memorial service Wednesday, November 5th. All public safety vehicles participating in the "Last Ride" should be at the Paulding County Sheriff's Office at 8:00 a.m. on November 5th for the briefing of the route. The motorcade will begin forming up at 8:30. It will leave from the sheriff's office no later than 9:30 for the “Last Ride” to the chapel.

    Route:

    • From the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office

    • Turn RIGHT on Dallas Acworth Hwy/East Memorial Dr.

    • Turn LEFT on Legion Rd.

    • Turn LEFT on Merchants Dr.

    • Turn LEFT on Hwy. 92

    • Turn LEFT on Hwy. 278

    • Turn RIGHT on Bus. 6/Atlanta Hwy.

We would like to express our thanks to everyone that has sent their condolences during this difficult time. Corporal Mick Davis was a great man. We look forward to celebrating his life with each of you.

  14. I didn't say what he did wasn't stupid...or that anybody complained about his sign or freedom of speech. I just don't really understand where the police would get involved.

I didn't realize that the laws allow for LEO's to tell us what we can't wear...and I really thought that, as long as we weren't breaking any laws, stupidity was legal too. :pardon:

Crackdown on Fatalities this Labor Day Weekend

(Paulding County, GA) This Labor Day, the Paulding County Sheriff's Office will be aggressive in their fight to save lives on the roadways during the holiday weekend. Throughout the state, we commonly see an increase in fatal crashes taking place on holiday weekends. Deputies have said that they will do everything possible to see that Paulding County does not contribute to those statistics.

Operation Rolling Thunder is still in effect in Paulding and Bartow Counties. You will likely see a number of road safety checks being conducted. This type of law enforcement effort has proven effective in identifying numerous drivers that are deemed unsafe to drive on the roadways. They have turned up countless impaired drivers and several unrestrained violations. Deputies will also be targeting speeding vehicles and other aggressive drivers on the roads.

"We want to send a message to the public this year," noted Lt. Col. Gary Gulledge. "It's time to buckle up, slow down, seat belt your children in their child safety seats, and do not drive impaired this Labor Day weekend." The Paulding County Sheriff's Office will strive to ensure the safety of every motorist that travels through Paulding County.

Speed and aggressive driving equals tickets or even jail time. If the threat of higher fines, points on your license, increased insurance rates, and jail time is not enough to slow you down then think about this: It is a proven fact that speeding waste gas. Slow down and save money. The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety points out that your fuel efficiency begins to rapidly decrease at speeds over sixty miles per hour. You can lower your gas mileage by 5 percent around town and as much as 33 percent on the highways. With rising gas prices, motorist can regard speeding as an effective move towards high fines and higher fuel costs.

Driving the speed limit will not only save lives, but it will also save gas. Help us do both this Labor Day weekend.

The Paulding County Sheriff's Office and the
Paulding County Fire Department will honor the HEROES of 9/11

(Paulding County, GA) On September 11, 2008, the Paulding County Sheriff's Office and the Paulding County Fire Department will hold a ceremony at Mt. Tabor Park honoring the men and women who gave their lives to help others on one unforgettable day, 9/11/2001.

On September 11, 2001, thousands of lives were lost throughout the United States as a Terrorist Attack was launched against Americans. There were nearly 3,000 people killed on this day. Hundreds of them were first responders, heroes, running without hesitation to answer the cries for help. Hundreds of lives were likely saved due to these heroic acts.

"We will never forget this horrible day," said Sheriff Bruce Harris. "We will always remember the families of the heroes that died that day. We will never forget about the ones that lived through the horrifying experience and are left with terrifying memories." This event will honor the family, friends, and all Americans that were affected by the tragedy of 9/11.

"We would like for the community to come out and support the families of the victims from 9/11," said Lt. Col. Gary Gulledge. "This is a time when we as a Paulding County community can pull together and show our support for the people directly affected by this event, many of whom now live in our community."

On September 12, 2001 President George Bush made the following statement: "These acts shattered steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American Resolve." Everyone is invited out to take part in this ceremony.

The ceremony will take place at the 9/11 memorial at Mt. Tabor Park located on East Paulding Dr. The ceremony will begin promptly at 9:00 a.m.

DRIVERS ARE CAUTIONED TO WATCH FOR CHILDREN

    WHEN TRAVELLING IN SCHOOL ZONES

(PAULDING COUNTY, GA) With school starting back this month, the Paulding County Sheriff's Office is reminding drivers to remain alert when driving in school zones or around school buses to ensure the safety of our children who are being transported on the Paulding County roadways.

Lt. Col. Gary Gulledge, commander of the Field Operations Division, has said that deputies will be patrolling school zones as part of their daily operations. They will also be watching for drivers that fail to stop for school buses that are loading or unloading passengers. He is reminding drivers that Georgia Law requires them to stop in both directions for school buses that are displaying their red flashing lights and has the stop arm activated, except for on controlled access highways or when the highway is divided into separate roadways. After stopping, you may proceed only after the school bus resumes motion or the safety lights are no longer activated.

Deputies with the Paulding County Sheriff's Office urge drivers to use extreme care and to leave more space when travelling around a school bus, especially when following a school bus. "Driver's who are following school buses too closely are not prepared for the frequent stops made by the school bus," Sheriff Bruce Harris noted. "Drivers should always use extreme caution when following school buses and obey the posted speed limits in the school zones." The majority of fatal crashes involving school buses occurred when the school bus was struck by a smaller passenger vehicle. Sheriff Bruce Harris reminds drivers that a conviction for unlawfully passing a school bus carries six points on your driving record. "A conviction for passing a stopped school bus also carries a six month suspension of your driver's license for drivers under the age of 21," he added.

Lt. Col. Gary Gulledge also reminds drivers to be alert for children waiting for the school bus especially during the early morning hours when visibility is reduced. "Children are not always aware of their surroundings or vehicles that may be passing by and the dangers that they pose," he said. "Drivers should be prepared to stop when approaching children that are waiting for a school bus."
