    Remembering the Heroes

    September 11, 2001

(Paulding County, GA) On Sunday, September 11, 2011, the Paulding County Sheriff's Office and the Paulding County Fire Department will hold a ceremony at Mt. Tabor Park (at the 9-11 memorial site) honoring the men and women who gave their lives to help others on one unforgettable day, 9/11/2001. Pre-ceremony music will be provided by Paulding County High School Band members. The Legion Riders will escort personnel from the New York Police Department and Fire Department to the memorial site.

On September 11, 2001, thousands of lives were lost throughout the United States as a terrorist attack was launched against Americans. There were nearly 3,000 people killed on this day. Hundreds of them were first responders, heroes, running without hesitation, to answer the cries for help. Hundreds of lives were likely saved due to these heroic acts.

"We will never forget this horrible day," said Paulding County Sheriff Gary Gulledge. "We will always remember the families of the heroes that died that day. We will never forget about the ones that lived through the horrifying experience and are left with terrifying memories." This event will honor the family, friends, and all Americans that were affected by the tragedy of 9/11.

This year’s guest speakers include representatives from the Fire Department of New York (Retired New York Shields of Georgia) and United Airlines. Representatives of the New York Police Department and American Airlines will also be in attendance. "We would like for the community to come out and support the families of the victims from 9/11," said Paulding County Fire Chief Mike Earwood. "This is a time when we as a Paulding County community can pull together and show our support for the people directly affected by this event, many of whom now live in our community."

This ceremony will be led and sponsored by the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard, the Paulding County Fire Department Honor Guard, and the Retired New York (RNY) Shields of Georgia.

Everyone is invited to take part in this ceremony.

The ceremony will take place at the 9/11 memorial site at Mt. Tabor Park located at 1550 East Paulding Dr Dallas, GA 30157. The ceremony will begin promptly at 8:00 a.m.

  2. Move along... Nothing to see here :)

The helicopter was out checking the power lines, unrelated to police activity. It just so happened we had a burglary in progress call in that same area (Hwy 61 at Winndale Rd). One suspect ran into the woods before we arrived. After a brief search of the area that suspect was located and arrested along with the suspect that had remained on scene. All of this happened before any type of Nixle message was needed.

  3. I am a little sensitive about my this, my husband is a chiro and we have had to deal with a lot grief, if a MD. does not help someone, people to take it in stride and go to another Dr.

If a chiro can't or doesn't help someone then they are all considered bad.

I get really upset about these types of things, it's not enough that we deal with that issue, but now ripping people off one more strike against them in the eyes of the public.

When Dr.s get caught ripping off medicare it is the doctor, when chiros do it they all have to share the bad rap.

Holy Smokes! You mean you guys feel the same "slap in the face" when another chiropractor is arrested as we do when another police officer is arrested? :o

Well, I know exactly how you feel. However, if it makes you feel any better, I am not going to stop using or providing law enforcement services anytime a "bad apple" is identified just like I am not going to quit going to the chiropractor anytime soon! :good:

  4. One thing that I don't participate in is back and forth arguments on a thread. I posted a very detailed response and even posted a follow up for some clarification. As I stated earlier, some will agree with the decisions while others will disagree. We respect both opinions. We deal with all complaints on an employee’s use of their issued vehicle on a case by case basis to determine if disciplinary action is required.

  5. what else are people with assigned take home cars allowed to do in them?

grocery shop? go on dates? visit friends/relatives?

how are riders covered by the county insurance?

how much did the insurance increase to cover non employees, non detainees?

The same rules apply that would apply to any other citizen "ride-a-long." "Ride-a-longs" are rare but approved on a case by case basis. The citizen is typically covered by insurance as long as they were approved by the sheriff to be in the vehicle. The insurance is already a substantial amount simply due to the nature of the job we perform and the high probability of damages and injuries that we will see. There has not been an increase because of any citizen ride-a-longs.

  6. There are a number of reasons why you may see deputies dropping off children at schools throughout Paulding County. Rather one would agree or not, we get called out on a regular basis to homes in order to assist with “parenting” issues. There are times were we have to deal with “unruly juvenile” complaints when a child has refused to go to school. In some cases, a deputy may end up transporting that child to school with the parents consent. In other cases, deputies may locate and pick up juveniles attempting to “skip school” in order to hang out with friends. Those juveniles also may be transported to the school by the deputy. Sheriff Gulledge does allow his employees to drop their kids off at school on their way to work in the morning or pick them up on their way home. This is done before or after their shift. The employees that are eligible for and have been assigned a “take home” vehicle are allowed to transport their children in their assigned vehicles. Not every employee at the sheriff’s office has an assigned vehicle.

The “take home” car policy began a few years ago as a way to increase the benefits to our deputies and to compete with surrounding agencies for qualified employees. As the sole law enforcement agency for the non-incorporated areas of Paulding County, we want the best of the best here in our community. To have that, we must compete with the salary and benefits of the other metro Atlanta agencies; most of which have a much larger tax base. Otherwise the well qualified, highly trained and professional police officer would be applying for other agencies outside of Paulding County.

The sheriff and his command staff identified the “take home” car program as the most cost effective way to tax payers and the most beneficial to our employees to raise the “benefits” without raising the deputy’s salaries. A potential raise in salary to compete with other metro agencies would have cost tax payers millions of dollars.

What benefit has the county and its tax payers received? A “take home” car will last five years on patrol; “shared” cars only last 4 years on patrol. A “take home” car receives on average eight oil changes a year; “shared” cars receive on average 19 oil changes a year. There are additional savings in brakes and other routine maintenance that is saved with the “take home” vehicles. These “take home” vehicles have also increased the amount of patrol cars that are observed in our neighborhoods, businesses, and schools. This tactic is meant to serve as a deterrent for crime in our area. These vehicles are not to be driven by the employees during their off duty hours other than when they are reporting to or from work. In other words, you will not see a deputy using their “take home” vehicle for personal use on their off day. Disciplinary action would be taken immediately on anyone found abusing this program.

While some may see this as a misappropriation of funds, the sheriff and county officials have confirmed a savings to tax payers as well as an increase in benefits to employees to substitute a raise in salaries.

DALLAS, GA -- When a person goes missing or a crime is in progress, every second matters.

That's why Paulding County's Sheriff's Office isn't waiting for a middle man to get the word out. It's embraced social media like Facebook, Twitter and Nixle to immediatly alert people when they need the information most.

Nixle provides subscribers with actionable information specific to their zip code or city via free e-mails and texts (standard text messaging rates apply).

"Recently we had a rash of car break-ins in a housing subdivision; we had about 17 in one night," said Corporal Brandon Gurley with the Paulding County Sheriff's Office. "So I alerted everyone who lived within a five mile radius of the area. We let citizens know what happened and [reminded them] to make sure to remove any valuables from sight and lock their car doors -- simply ideas to deter that from happening on their property."

The next night, there weren't any break-ins. While he says that may have just been a coincidence, "I would like to think our message helped empower homeowners with the steps to protect their property."

Corporal Gurley says social media helps officers track down all types of individuals.

"When we've had missing children or missing elderly people, we're able to tell the public immediatly, so they know immediatly to call us," he said.

In a recent case of a fugitive on the run, the department sent a message to all residents in the area of the search. "People were told if you see someone matching this description, do not approach him; call 911," said Corporal Gurley. "We were able to get a tip that let to an arrest."

    It's not all about crime.

"We can also notify citizens of evacuations," he said. "Say we have a major accident or gas leak, we can alert them via Nixle." The county's E-911 Communications Center also uses Nixle to send out traffic alerts. The secure site works directly with municipal agencies.

The county began using social media last April and has more than 2,000 Nixle subscribers and Facebook fans.

The Paulding County Sheriff’s Office has been online communicating with our citizens through social networking sites since April 2009 and has had great success with this method of information sharing. The sheriff’s office must have the support of our community to be successful. Communication is the key to establishing and maintaining an effective relationship with the public. Social networking is a communication tool that allows the sheriff’s office to provide information to, and receive information from local subscribers.

The Sheriff’s Office officially launched their first social networking tool, Nixle.com, to the public in June 2009. Nixle was designed to deliver important and timely information to residents in our area using the latest technology. Nixle delivers trustworthy and important neighborhood-level public safety and community event notifications by web, email, and cell phone. Nixle is completely free, simple, and trusted. Register now and learn more at www.nixle.com then share this new service with friends and neighbors to spread the word.

A few months later, the sheriff’s office began using Twitter to reach out to those individuals who prefer to “tweet.” The Paulding County Sheriff’s Office can be found on Twitter as “PauldingSheriff.” The “followers” on Twitter will receive the same Nixle messages in the form of a “tweet” with a link to take them to the Nixle website for the full message.

Do you use Facebook? You can find us there too! Just search for “Paulding County Sheriff” to find our official fan page with many photos, videos, and messages pertaining to the daily operations and community functions of the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office. Did you see a story that impressed you posted on Facebook? Tell us about it in the comments section. We look forward to connecting with many more citizens throughout our community.

“These services will allow us to share important information with our citizens very quickly,” said Paulding County Sheriff Gary Gulledge. “They can receive this information and then respond to us immediately with the information that we may need to solve a crime or locate a missing child or person,” he added.

  10. Here are a few reviews that were received after last year’s summit:

    Email 1:

    Brandon,

I would like to echo the responses that you have already received and say what a great job everyone did last night at the Cyber Safety Summit. I hope that the word will continue to spread and together, as a community, we can begin to educate both parents and children alike on potential dangers of the internet and of dangerous games our children are playing such as the “choking game”.

I also wanted to see if there’s any way you could send me one of the packages that were distributed after the meeting. Unfortunately, I had to leave before the end so I was unable to pick one up.

    Email 2:

I attended the Cyber Summit last night and will attend the one at East Paulding High on Wednesday evening at 7. I urge you to attend. Please forward this email to everyone in your address book that has children. The danger is real and it only takes a couple of hours of education to combat it!!

    Email 3:

Thank you so much for putting this summit together. While I knew about online dangers and had heard about some of the dangerous games kids were playing, it didn’t hit me how serious these problems are until hearing the firsthand, local experiences last night. What courage and love it took for those dads to share their stories and I know they will save lives.

Please keep continuing your outreach into our community by hosting these summits. Hopefully, participation will continue to grow. We are all better parents and our kids are much safer when we are informed.

    Thank you!

    Email 4:

My husband & I attended the Cyber Safety Summit Monday (4/27) at the Paulding Co High School.

WOW! This was a VERY informative event and we are so glad we took the time to attend. I would love to encourage you to attend the Cyber Safety Summit @ East Paulding if you did not attend Monday night (4/27). It will be well worth your time!!

We were informed on things that absolutely gave us a wake up call. Sometimes we just think we have it all together, and nothing like these things will ever come home to us...I know from experience that none of us are exempt from tragedy. May I encourage you to take a couple of hours to find out what your children/grandchildren may be involved in.

Thanks to our law enforcement officers and other community workers that took the time after being on their jobs all day to share this most valuable information to the public. It's public education like this that may prevent heartache to a family while possibly preventing the death of a loved one. Thank you so much for sharing.

    Email 5:

    Corporal Gurley:

You guys did a great job tonight. As I told Sheriff Gulledge, you have started something good here, and I hope to see it spread like wild fire. I have nine and eleven year old daughters, and I don't want to see their lives impacted by any of the things that we heard tonight. Thank you for putting the summit together. Paulding County needs to hear the message.

    Email 6:

I just wanted to thank you all for providing the children's safety summit for our community and school employees. I attended the session last night at East Paulding High School and learned some very important information for our students and for my own children.

Thank you again for all your time and efforts.

  11. 2010 Parent Summit Flyer smaller.jpg

The Paulding County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting the 2nd annual parent’s ONLY Cyber Safety Summit in April to educate parents on the potential dangers and risks involved with the Internet, online gaming, chat rooms, texting, and “sexting”. The event will be offered on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium of Chattahoochee Technical College (Paulding Campus) located at 400 Nathan Dean Blvd. Dallas, GA 30132.

“Do you know where your children are…ONLINE?” This is the question that we are asking the parents of our community. Our goal is to educate the parents so that they can embrace the benefits of the Internet and cell phones while simultaneously safe guarding their children from online exploitation or other dangers.

With the help of the Georgia Bureau of Investigations, MyWirelessLife.org, Keep Georgia Safe.org, Paulding Child Advocacy Center and the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) this year’s summit, led by the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office, will address the growing trend of texting, “sexting”, online gaming, and Internet safety. “Children usually do not realize that they are being victimized until it is too late,” noted Paulding County Sheriff Gary Gulledge. “Parents often times do not understand the technology being used by their children and the potential danger, if it is used irresponsibly.”

This type of proactive approach (an educational summit) to cyber safety has only been offered in Paulding County. We hope to dramatically decrease the number of potential child victims in the areas of online exploitation (and other dangers) thru this summit.

Since seating is limited, participants are asked to register (RSVP) although admission is free. They only need to send the names of the person(s) attending to the email address listed on the flyer (parentsummit2010@yahoo.com).

  12. Do you know what kind of vehicles are involved? my mama was going to food lion this morning,

GT you know where my mom lives so would she have had to pass that road to get to food lion?

I do not know where winndale road is.

You can click on the link at the bottom of the Nixle traffic message to view the entire message including a map of the area of the crash. That will show you the location of Winndale Rd.

I wanted to remind everyone of this year's ceremony. The ceremony will begin at 8:30 in the morning and will include members of the Retired New York Shields of Georgia. Make your plans to join us as we remember the many lives lost on this day.

  14. my kid didn't get to sound the siren last time and it made him cry - will there be a siren machine available?

    How about any K9 units?

I don't see why he would not be able to sound the siren in any of the vehicles on display. Also, K-9 will be on hand at this event.

We have added a few extra static displays to this year's event. One addition is the Blackhawk helicopter that will be on display. Be sure to make your plans to attend this special event to see first hand the equipment and vehicles used by public safety and military officials and the people that operate them.
