  1. I don't know about that - They can keep track of what you buy and just need to swipe your card to see if it's a legitimate return.

I always thought the reason they mark the receipt was to keep someone from taking their stuff to their car, then coming back in and getting a cart full of the exact same things. If the receipt wasn't marked, they would get away with it.

Ahhhh! Your reasons make better sense than mine.

  2. I don't stand in line to get out of that door. I just walk on by.

Confidence is key. I don't stand there like a sheep waiting for slaughter.

It was my impression that if your receipt is not swiped with the right color highlighter for that day you could not return something later. Have you ever had to return anything with a receipt that was not checked at the door? Was it a problem?

  3. Best wishes to your mom and so glad she enjoyed Cheffy's food. A while back I read an article in Guideposts about cooking for cancer patients. Here is a recipe from their website that may be helpful to your mom. Also, there is a book on this subject from the same author of this recipe.

  4. Thanks, in advance, for any help on this. Is this really going to work? I want to order a Gateway 6468 Laptop for $749 - $100 MIR and the OD site let me add 3 Freebie codes. Will I really get the free things along with my regular order for the laptop? I chose 7 pizza certificates because the laptop is over $700 and the minimum purchase to qualify is $100. It looks like it will work but I'm wondering if they'll cancel the order. Anyone have any experience with Office Depot and this type of order? How did it work out for you? If I can't get the freebies then the price isn't as appealing to me. Here is a copy of the shopping cart right now:

  5. Ants also hate baby powder or any similar type powder. I use it around the baseboards, doors, and/or window sills where I see ants coming in. I leave it for a few days then vacuum it up. It can be a little messy (some white footprints if the kids walk through it) but it doesn't really require much.

  6. From the original post:

"Under this law, the lender would forgive everything you owe above $90,000. Let's say that you owe $105,000 of that original $110,000 loan. The lender would forgive $15,000, and let you pay off the loan for $90,000. The lender would not be allowed to seek any of that $15,000 later."

How is the original lender being compensated for their $15K loss? Are we the taxpayers making it up to them? Are they deducting it from their taxes? There has got to be incentive for the lenders to go along with this and I'm assuming they are being paid off by the taxpayer (ME and YOU!).

I resent helping people in a mortgage mess. My husband and I live on one income and we purposely bought a house that we could easily afford on that one income 9 years ago. We also WAITED to buy until we had the money to make a down payment. We financed with a straight 30 year fixed loan so we would have no surprises along the way. I feel that we were responsible in our choces but now we are being forced by the governement to help those who were irresponsible and bought either more house than they could afford or bought before they could afford it.

  7. someone...anyone??

My daughter and I saw this in the theatre and we liked it. The 3d effects seemed to appear only in a few spots like when the drum sticks are thrown up in the air or looking down the fretboard of a guitar. It was not an entirely 3D movie.

  8. I've heard of this. Does anyone know the reason the seats have an expiration date? What is a typical lifespan of a carseat? Do they disintegrate over time? Carseats are made of some tough plastic...what's going to happen to them? I can see that some improvements may be made over time so newer models might be safer. I also understand the bit about replacing after a wreck. But, what is really the reason for a car seat having an expiration date? I am a little cynical and wonder if the manufacturers are playing on our fears and creating a bigger market for themselves.

  9. Does anyone know or have any secrets on how to get elmers glue out of carpet ... My daughter took the cap off the bottle she had in her bedroom and now the whole bottle is in the bedroom carpet....

    Thanks ;)

I'm thinking aiming a blow dryer on low/warm at the glue might soften it enough to lift it off. If you try it let us know if it helped.

  10. I know I've asked before for recommendations where to go. I think we'll do a carriage tour and maybe the Patriots point. Is there anywhere else? I need to know how many days to plan on going. I know when we did the Biltmore...we had way too many days planned.

Is there a good beach area in Charleston? Anything else I need to see/do?

BEACHES: Isle of Palms is the more commercial area, Sullivans Island is less commercial, Folly Beach is sort of "hippie" and laid back. Kiawah Island is beautiful with a nice boardwalk down to the beach but a little bit of a drive south of Charleston but not too far. If you go to Kiawah try to pick up some Johns Island tomatoes to bring home. They are the best!

THINGS TO SEE/DO: Carriage ride is great way to get a feel for the historic area. Walk the Battery and sit on a cannon at White Point Gardens. Patriots Point is nice if you like ships and military history. We were there earlier this year and it was interesting but a little run down. Take a boat tour over to Fort Sumter where the Union Army was stationed and fired upon which started the Civil War. Fort Moultrie. on the end of Sullivan's Island, is another choice for history. http://www.nps.gov/fomo There are quite a few homes that are open for tours. The historic Charleston homes and gardens are beautiful and unique. You'll learn about the "Charleston Single House" which is a narrow home with side porches which were designed to take the most advantage of sea breezes.

Stroll through the market (Market Street) and get a praline at Market Street Sweets. From there walk down to the waterfront park and dip your feet in the fountain. There is an aquarium there also. Take a tour of the Old Exchange and Custom House and Dungeon. We attended a wedding there over Memorial Day weekend and it was beautiful and interesting. George Washington attended a ball there and is said to have danced with over 200 ladies in one evening. Drive down a cobblestone street near Broad and East Bay Streets. There are several plantations that can be toured. On Mt. Pleasant you can visit Boone Hall Plantation which is one of the nicest historically preserved plantations. There are others on Hwy. 61 heading toward Summerville. The North Charleston Coliseum has some pretty good concerts and some big name shows come through pretty often. If you have kids going with you there are several county run water parks that are great. Visit www.Charlestoncounty.org to get info. Also, the Charleston newspaper is www.charleston.net and has good information for visiting.

FOOD: Seafood on Shem Creek in any one of several restaurants is a beautiful area to eat and relax. Bessinger's BBQ has great BBQ and Hash on Rice and is on Savannah Hwy. close to downtown but across the Ashley River. For Lowcountry style BBQ (mustard based) and the biggest onion rings, it is the best.

I hope you enjoy your trip. My husband was born and raised just outside of Charleston and I moved to Summerville as a teenager. We've lived in GA for 10 years now and wouldn't leave it but we still love the Lowcountry, too. :D

  11. THANK YOU!

I have this Diet Coke habit and I've been saving the cans. I'm going to see if it pays to drink DC!!!!!

Would you mind sharing what you found out about the aluminum cans? I've got aluminum gutters that were removed from our house a few years back laying under our deck that I'd like to sell if it's worth it. Thanks! ^_^

  12. My 8 y.o. daughter has seen Dr. Mark Bordenca at Eye Consultants in Marietta beside Kennestone hospital for two conditions since she was about 18 months old. She's got Duane Syndrome in one eye and vision trouble in the other eye. The Duane Syndrome causes her eye to be unable to turn to the left. It can't be corrected with surgery as of now and may never be able to but it doesn't seem to bother her. She wears glasses to correct vision in the other eye. Dr. Bordenca was concerned that she could lose vision in that eye because it was so weak. She had to wear a patch for 2 hours a day on and off for about 3 years (only at home, not at school). From the time she was 2 until just this past May she would see Dr. B every 3-5 months to make sure her eye hadn't lost any sight or strength. From what I've learned, a child's brain will actually shut down vision in a weak eye and the period from age 2-8 is the most critical. At her last visit in May Dr. B said to stop the patching and to come back in 9 months. She seems to have made it through that critical period very well. I feel fortunate that her pediatrician (Dr. Loventhal at Cobb Pediatrics) noticed the Duane Syndrome when she about 18 months old and referred us to Dr. B. I may have eventually noticed the Duane Syndrome but would not have known her other eye was so weak for a few years probably until she was able to talk about it. Dr. B. isn't Mr. Personality but I believe he knows what he's doing and am confident in his abilities. B)

I just thought of something else you might like to know. We have always used our health insurance for these eye doctor visits. At first we had BC/BS and now we have Kaiser. We also have a vision plan that pays for exams at many eyeglass stores (optometrists) and pays for frames and lenses but that is not accepted by most ophthalmologists. One time I thought I'd take my daughter to one of those stores for the exam since it was covered in full and the optometrist changed her prescription. At the next visit to Dr. B he said it was all wrong for her condition. I think that prescription was actually too strong and wouldn't have required her eye to work hard enough. After that we just stuck with Dr. B.

  13. We will be open Friday. We may close a little early Friday but we will open at 10:00.

We also have those boiled peanuts now.

Those looking for those yellow watermalons, we should have some more this week. We had a few last week but they did not last long.

Keep your eyes out for our sales for the week. We will post those soon.

Do you have green peanuts? I like to boil them at home myself.

  14. Another choice to consider is AT&T Uverse. We had it installed on 6/14 and so far I like it a lot. We have 4 TVs and the main DVR is capable of recording the programs at the touch of a button. We were told that software allowing the other 3 boxes to record will be available in the next few months. We can also program our recording over the internet which is neat. We were already with AT&T for internet because we had been with Bellsouth before their takeover. We now have a faster connection speed. The tech came out and worked quite a few hours to run the cable and get us all set up. I've had to call service 2x because something went wrong last week but they were very helpful. They even upgraded us to a bigger package of channels and higher internet speed for 6 months for free because we had to call. I don't know how Uverse will react in a storm and may find that out today considering the skies right now. We had Comcast cable before and had very little trouble but were excited about the choices Uverse offered so that is why we changed. Our installer was pretty cool...check out this video...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7XBBbuq1TY

Yes, that's our Uverse installer jamming with my son and his friend in our basement after the work was done! :)

I had to search this because it seemed too far fetched. While the story is true it is a little one-sided. The author of the article at

    http://www.prisonplanet.com/articles/june2..._permission.htm

pulls only certain portions out of the original story which quotes "Prof Furedi, the author of a book called "Paranoid Parenting", said there was a trend to treat parenthood as a "professional endeavour that demanded increasing regulation and monitoring". From the original Telegraph article: "From next year the new Independent Safeguarding Authority will require any adult who come into contact with children or vulnerable adults either through their work or in voluntary groups to be vetted." It seems this is an effort not to vet parents regarding their own children but adults in contact with children or vulnerable adults. However, I can see it is possible for the requirement to become abused by some government-loving, paranoid adults as indicated by the examples given by Prof. Furedi.
