Sanders said he has decided to call in law enforcement from Paulding County to investigate Aragon’s handling of the incident.

The chief said this decision is voluntary and he just wants to make sure all protocols were correctly followed.

“I don’t want anyone to think we are hiding anything,” Sanders said.

Woman charged in police car theft released, will face numerous charges

10-27-2009

The woman who allegedly tried to drive off in an Aragon police car last week is currently out of jail on a property bond, but officials said she will face numerous charges.

Tina Michelle Cobb, 36, who Aragon police first identified as Tina Poole, is of Rockmart but has no permanent address listed, according to Aragon Police Chief Wayne Sanders.

Polk County Jail docket reports list only one DUI refusal charge against Cobb. However, Sanders said many more are coming.

Aragon police investigation continues; GBI awaiting video tape

Nov 12th 2009

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is waiting on video evidence to complete the probe into an incident where a woman in custody allegedly attempted to steal an Aragon police car.

According to Aragon Police Chief Wayne Sanders, he talked with the GBI Wednesday regarding the Oct. 17 incident where Tina Poole Cobb, 36, of Rockmart, allegedly got out of handcuffs and attempted to drive off in a police car.

Sanders said the department had to send off the video to be “put back together” because it and the video camera where damaged when the car wrecked.

“There is just one part of the video he needs to see,” Sanders said.

Sanders voluntarily called for an outside investigation into procedures in arresting Cobb to ensure proper restraining standards were followed.

The incident happened around 11:30 p.m. when Sgt. Matthew Rook stopped a vehicle on Portland Road at Oakridge Drive on numerous traffic violations and a suspicion of DUI, police reports state.

Investigation into stolen Aragon police car nearly complete; officer involved resigns

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has almost completed its internal investigation into the handling of an October incident in Aragon where a woman allegedly attempted to steal a police car, according to Aragon Police Chief Wayne Sanders.

Sanders said the GBI has all video evidence and should issue a report within the next week.

Meanwhile, Sgt. Matthew Rook, who was the officer involved in the case, has resigned.

Sanders said Rook resigned in order to move back to his hometown of Carrollton and go back to school. He said the officer’s decision had nothing to do with this incident.

Sanders confirmed that Rook had been demoted to sergeant a few months ago after it was determined he conducted inappropriate activity while on the job.

However, Sanders said that incident was in the past and not a concern of the department now.

“He was under no scrutiny from us,” Sanders said.

Hotel room altercation lead to Poole's rearrest

A drunken altercation in a Cedartown motel is what led to the Sunday arrest of Alex Lamar Poole, 18, of 2011 Lakeshore Drive, Leesburg, Ala., according to police.

This is Poole’s second arrest in two months. He still faces charges for his involvement in an October incident in Aragon, where his mother allegedly attempted to drive off in a police car.

According to Cedartown Assistant Police Chief Jamie Newsome, a woman and a female friend had rented a motel room at 1004 North Main St. She told police Poole and a male friend came to her room intoxicated.

An altercation began and Poole began damaging the room and becoming physical with the woman, according to reports.

Reports state her friend left and the woman hid in the bathroom with Poole preventing her from leaving.

GBI probe into Aragon police car incident now complete

Aragon Police Chief Wayne Sanders said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) probe into the actions of a police officer last fall regarding the attempted theft of a police car is over.

Sanders said the investigation revealed that Sgt. Matthew Rook followed proper protocol in restraining Tina Poole Cobb, 36, in a traffic stop and in firing a gun at the car when she allegedly attempted to flee in the police cruiser.

Rook has since resigned, but officials said his resignation wasn’t because of this incident.

The incident began when Rook made a routine traffic stop and began to question Cobb’s son, Alex Lamar Poole, 18, who was driving.

Cobb was handcuffed and put into a police car because she was reportedly belligerent during questioning of her son.

Reports state she escaped and took off in the car, ending in a wreck on Portland Road and Jenna Drive where she was arrested.
