  1. Paulding Memorial Hospital was governed by a local board of directors until that board voted to merge with the Promina health system back in the 1990's.

Promina was formed from the public hospital boards of Kennstone and South Cobb Hospitals and has since grown to include other 'publicly owned' hospitals in the metro area.

Wellstar is the new name of that group.

The mergers occurred in the 1990's when health care and, particularly, local hospitals were in a state of crisis because of budgeting shortfalls and the rapidly increasing costs of health care. The public hospitals in the area, in an effort to survive the various crunches coming their way, merged together to avoid what appeared to be a certain fate. What fate? You can see that in the various crisis that have surrounded Grady over the past decade. That you're not hearing of similar instances with the former public hospitals in Cobb, Bartow, Douglas and Paulding is because they merged and gained efficiencies because of that merger.

If I'm not mistaken the old Paulding Memorial Medical Center hospital board still meets to renew its 'lease' of the facility to Wellstar and appoints a member to serve on the Wellstar board or at least an advisory board. It has been some time since all this happened and I may not be precise or absolutely correct on the structure at this point but I'm relatively certain that the old PMMC board remains although it has effectively delegated all its authority to the Wellstar board.

Still, they remain technically somewhere in the loop and Wellstar's story is, in effect their story and Wellstar's history, their's as well.

Pubby, you are correct. The Paulding Hospital Authority still does exists and owns the Hospital. It is leased to Wellstar who runs the operation. There is a Community Board (Hospital Authory being a part of that board) who acts as an advisory board for the County. There is also a representive of the Board elected to the operating Board of Wellstar. We meet every other month at the Chamber.

  2. What areas of Paulding does commission post 3 cover?

Basic lines are the county line (east) to 92 at East Paulding Blvd down 92 south to just south of Hiram and cuts over at morningside dr (west) to the golf club on Nebo then south on Bakers Bridge to the county line and then back east to the county line.

  3. Yep. I loved Orville.

Does anyone know if Officer Don is still living?

I use to date the womens editor of WSB radio back in the 60's and while waiting for her to get off work went down to the studio and watched the show. In fact I became friends with Don and his cast and even played the drums on the show from time to time. Don is still alive and can be found on XM radio on a big band show. He is on the 40's channel at 9 to 10 pm Sundays and plays music and tells stories about the artists.

  4. My husband has been wanting to get another bike for quite awhile now

He is looking at an American Ironhorse   Never heard of this brand before two days ago..anyone have one?

My main question, do you feel it would be good for a daily commute of say 45 miles per day? Does it really save that much gas vs a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

I told him that it is up to him. he is the one who has to pay for it, but any help would be appreciated! He has not ridden since before we got married, so I would say he hasn't rode in like 13+ years...He said that he wants to take a class, so you know where any are local?

How much will our car ins go up?

Thanks for your help! I am trying to be the "supportive wife", but I have questions, ya know??

Not sure of Ironhorse, but if he would go to cycletrader.com or craigs list there are 100's of cycles out there for sale at good prices. As for gas mileage. Yes, you will do much better than a car. I have a Goldwing that gets high 40's . I would recommend classes and the Harley dealerships do provide them.

  5. Not funny then but now. Having surgery and the Dr. passed out and hit the floor. They kept me under until he woke up and finished. I found out a few days later and told him that " you said the operation was a piece of cake but you did say you were going to take a nap."

  6. First I would like to thank everyone that supported me and voted. I also thank the people who sent me messages of encouragement. Now that I have had some sleep and put my ego back together I want to tell you about one of the finest people I have known over that years I have been in Paulding County.

Larry Hart is a honorable, decent person with a good heart and fine family. He cares about Paulding County and I would be proud to call him my Post Commissioner. He will have only the best interests of the citizens he will serve in making his decisions.

Please support and vote for Larry on the 5th.

    Sincerely,

    John Lindsay

  7. First let me state that I am very happy that David Austin kicked behind 5,059 (69.35%) more votes than Sherian. And that Kim Cobb 2,823 (61.40%) more than Paulette Braddock.

Now that being said. I am having a problem with the numbers.

Chairman Elect David Austin and Exiting Chairman Jerry Sherian had a total of 13,075 votes. So we know that there were at least 13,075 voters.

Yet for the following there were only a total of

    District 1 / 12,156 difference of / 919 votes

    District 3 / 12,379 / 696

    At Large / 11,575 / 1,500

    Comm II / 03,076 / 9,999

    Coronor / 12,537 / 718

Sheriff / 13,074 / 1 (sorry the numbers won't line up when posted. The do in the writing but not in the posting. )

Now my problem is: In all the races the difference is not enough to bring any of the 2nd candidates even close to the winner except in one and that is Commission III Post where there are only 3,076 votes total leaving 9,999 unknown votes. My question, was there a Democrat running for this Post and it was not posted in the results or where there that many "No Votes" for this post? And if there was a Democrat that received more than the 1,042 vote that Graham received, would that candidate not be declared the winner instead of a run off between Graham and Hart?

Just asking because the numbers don't add up and I have to balance the numbers to zero because when it comes right down to it, all numbers have to balance to zero.

    JMO and asking

The Post III race was non-partisan it only so happened that all the candidates were Republican. Only the people living in Post III could vote for us. So, only those votes show.

  8. So, my question is: How long do the candidates have in order to get all of their signs taken down?

I guess there will still be a few for the Post 3 runoff on August 5th but at least the majority of them should be taken down soon and "Make Paulding Beautiful" again. :p

I don't know exactly if there is a law or not, but we are in the truck today taking them down. If you see some of mine still out tomorrow I missed it. Please pull it up an trash it. :D

    Thanks....

    John

  9. Finally, election eve is here. I know everyone is happy to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I know I am.

The race for Post III Commissioner has been quite a journey. From the tragic death of Hal Echols to the proliferation of candidates to replace him, it has been an intense 5 months.

The Post race has been interesting as each candidate promotes their agenda, experience, qualifications and plans for the future. The next two years are going to be very important to our community. Since it has been announced that there will be no increase in the mill rate this coming year and with the tax digest value going down the budget for 2010 will be tight and must be closely watched.

For these reasons and more, whoever the voters elect to fill the vacant Post III seat will have important issues which must be addressed. Serious consideration of our top priorities will be key to Paulding’s future. The person in that seat must be experienced, willing to ask the hard questions, and make the best decisions for all the taxpayers.

I believe I am the best candidate for the job & ask for your support on Tuesday.

    Thank you,

    John

  10. Ok, the gloves are off!!! At the meet and greet Saturday one of my opponents criticized my desert. All all this after hours and hours over a hot stove..... er.... ok.. I went to Sams. In any event the mud has started to hit the fan and I just have to respond...

Ah shucks, not really. The Post III campaign has been well run by all and I believe we have each gained from meeting and talking with each other. Although I do believe that I am the best person for the job, ready to make a difference now, each brings their own strength and vision for Pauldings future.

I encourage each of you to vote Tuesday because your Post Commissioner will make a difference in you life. Chances are very strong that there will be a run off election on August 5th with the top two candidates become informed and please re-vote.

  11. When did the rule that someone had to be on the roster to speak come in? (shut it--I'm tired and I can't make that sentence better. Don't tell Glassdogs.)

It seems like BOC and BOE meetings should have an open forum, so that people who come up with questions during the meeting are able to speak. That seems like it should just be a no-brainer.

Excuse the interruption but I just got to speak. (kinda like at the Commission meetings) I fully agree. Even though the Commissioners can be contacted via phone and e-mail the citizens need to have an open forum at the meetings. I have drafted a revision to the current rules that I will submit at my first meeting. This would allow for a time to be heard and for the Commission and/or department heads to answer.

I was at one meeting when Ms. Bell spoke about the need to fix the "stinky ponds" and sat down with out a word from the Commission. The next meeting (two weeks later) there was a report from the Water Department on the steps being taken to correct the problem. There was no reason that could have not been discussed then. I hope I get a change to make some changes.

  12. maybe you can answer my question.....when you vote they have 3 boxes to choose from. One is republican, one is democrate and the other is for post 3. Now I was confused on whether I was suppose to mark the post 3 and republican or just republican. They had told me to just mark the one box and if I was in the post 3 area, it would show up on my ballot. I don't recall picking any for that post when I voted. So is that the way it works?

Since it is a special election there is a seperate ballot. It just so happens that all the people running are Republician.

  13. I could be wrong on this but I think it was due on June 30th, but you have a 8 day grace period. I think it must be in by tomorrow at 5:00 PM I am not 100% on this, but I know that is what I was told about mine though. I have been out of town and needed it myself.

Here is what I got in via e-mail

  14. This sounds great. Have there been any responses from candidates, do you know who will be showing up as of now?

The letter had a "RSVP" and all candidates were invited to the "Meet the Candidates: Mixer on Thursday, July 10, 5-PM.

I will be there and look forward to meeting the community and discuss issues, concerns and opportunities.

    John

  15. Thanks Whitey!

Yes, John, the easiest simply quick fix would have been a total moratorium on any sewer taps going to the Coppermine Plant. But instead, our BOC, and Water Department have authorized thousands of lots going into the Coppermine basin since they were written up and fined for being non-compliant at the end of 2006. But they knew there were serious problems long before that. The STENCH became severe in 2003, and I personnally brought that information to the chairdude, and to the entire BOC on numerous occaisions.

They chose to wait until their sewer study was completed, and they had collected sufficient funds in sewer taps before they even initiated work on the plant. And during that time frame several major PRDs were approved, built, and hooked up to the plant along with what was coming down the sewer pipe from the northern part of the county.

Lack of planning, lack of leadership and a total disregard for the citizens of Paulding. All so the ROBBER BARON MEGA DEVELOPERS who donate thousands upon thousands to the various BOC members could keep throwing up their match box houses adding to the sewer STENCH and creating other problems as well.

Surepip, Thanks for the history lesson. I have no reason to argue your points. Not being on the Commission at that time I did not have first hand knowledge. Point is now where do we go. As I said I want to see the new plant expedited. I talked to Michael Carter today to get some additional facts and found that the Water Department is now using a new chemical (Bixocide plus Peroxide) to treat the stink. This is their 3rd try. It seems to be working. Passing throught there several times a week I have noticed a big difference.

I again asked about the completion of the new plant and was told it would be end of the year.. maybe as soon as November. Majority of the water will be discharged into the creek.

  16. Dot, The sewer problem did not happen overnight. It should have been addressed sooner! My information is that the plant is not overloaded but is worn out. That being said, if the problem is really the time it takes to move the waste to the pond then I would have ask then why should we expand the system? When we decided on Subdivisions when I was on the Water Authority we would not approve a project until we were sure we could provide water at pressure. I would like to see the new plant expedited.

    /quote]

Just what exactly are you saying here John ?

The plant cannot handle the sewage being pipe inl......and it emits a horrid odor much of the time which is very troublesome to those within 2+ miles of the plant who have to deal with the

    stench.

Please clarify your statement and give us your plans for dealing with the STENCH!

And while you are at it, since you have been involved with the water board, how did this happen in the first place and whaty is being done to alleviate and correct this problem for the future ?

You know I asked the exact same questions about the stench because it has been going on too long. I have gone down to the new plant and see it being worked on but there must be a way to expedite the completion. Maybe put some more people on the job or provide an incentive for early competition.

As for the Water Authority when I was Chairman. Yes, we were in the planning stages for a plant located at that site along with talking to other counties to share existing plants. However, the then County Chairman Johnny Helms decided to disband the Authority and have the County take over operation. The majority of the Authority members strongly objected to the plan due to the politics that would be involved but we lost the battle.

Surepip, do you have a quick fix?

  17. Tell me something John. What is your plan to bring meaningful business into the county? In your opinion what does it take to entice a large employer to see Paulding as the county that has more to offer than Cobb, Cherokee, Bartow or Douglas?

Boy Feelip, wish I had all the answers but I don't claim to. I do know that we are in competition with all those Counties and we must find new and innovative ways to stand out from the crowd. The business growth we have acquired has been due to roads, water, sewer and population increases. I believe that if we continue to improve these resources, plan well and use the talent we have right here in the County we can succeed. Companies are interested in the same thing that home owners are. A safe, stable community with good schools and forward thinking officials.

I spent today at the Georgia Tech Enterprise Innovation Institute with it's director and learned of the assistance they can provide to our County. This is a State funded Institute with current projects in Troup County plus extension offices all around the State. They have already done some basic work in Paulding in 2000 and are very willing to help update and expand their efforts on our behalf.

I would be interested in your thoughts on the topic.

  18. This is indeed good news that the citizens have now been Included in this Facility.

I have followed your campaign and you seem to have some interest in the Sewer and Court House projects, Having said that what would you have done differently with the sewer problem at Coopermine?

Would you approve all the Residential and commericial Zonings,Knowing the Coopermine Facility was not capable of handling this influx of raw sewerage, After all the citizens of Post #3 are really affected by this smell

Do you think that the Courthouse should be Bid out, Or are you okay with how it was handled?

Do you think a public hearing on the Courthouse should have occured?

Should the citizens be allowed a vote to spend the $65 Million or are you okay with the way the present adminstration has handled the project.

I do not know all the details on the Courthouse project. I do know that a committee comprised of Paulding citizens researched the location and then were involved in observing the selection of the contractor. I do not know if it was bid or not. If the project needed to be bonded then yes there should be a vote. As for a public hearing... I am always in favor of public input and am in fact rewriting the present meeting ordinance to present to the Commission if elected to open the meetings up to comment.

My personal feelings on the Courthouse is that the old building needed to be replaced. We are also going to face replacement of the jail. We are a growing County and all spending is a matter of deciding where the money is best spent. We will also need to decide on building a treatment plant or sending our new water source to Cobb to be treated. I want to see good jobs created and our people be able to remain in the County to work. We have a wealth of talent in the Chamber to assist with job development and recruitment we need to develop and use it.

  19. Then what in the hell is John Lindsay talking about with the opening post of this thread ? Making noise just to hear himself ?

LOL, I do like noise. However, the post was a follow up to a tour that I took of the new building with David Austin, Tommie Graham and Jay Garmon and posted in my Blog. We did see the room but at that time there were no plans to use it for Commissioner meetings. I was informed that the old Court House was to be used or, after completion, the new community building at the airport. I felt, and so did David, that it was a poor plan not to have the room also used for the Commission meetings since all the Department heads, staff and Commissioner would already be in the building.
