  1. TBAR,

I am just wondering if your MIL gives lessons.

I have several brooms that I have been wanting to try out but all the good teachers have passed on.

Does she take on apprentices ?

  2. Mr. Chairman,

If you bring MD, TB [Thunderbird] or Boones Farm then I will have to have you eat outside with the other animals. Yes, we drink a fair amount of properly fermented grape juice around here, although we do allow a "coke" or "diet Mt.Dew" on occaision with special releases and permits.

My wife generally drinks her green tea, and I drink her ration of grape juice.

    And to all:

For Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society, Boy Scouts, or just about any other good cause, I/we [my family] are always ready to fire up the oven and cook some pizzas, with ALL of the proceeds going to that cause.

You guys say when, and we will try to accomodate.

Bring your own grape juice or beer though unless it is one of our RFL dinners in the winter/spring. Those are "Fixed Price" with everyting included.

Thanks for the compliments guys. I am not in Emeril's league [yet], but I am working on it. "Duck fat rules !".

  3. The Interstate system was started during the Eisenhower terms in the 1950's as a means of being able to move large amounts of military and/or other supplies from one part of the country to another in a short period of time without dependance on rail or planes. They are "inter" state, connecting 1 state to another and the numbering system was thought out in advance [north south ending with 5 and east west ending with 0, and going from east to west [i5 is in california and I95 runs up the east coast; I10 is in Florida andI40 in Tennessess]. Bypass and perimeter roads are 3 digit normally taking in one of the primary interstates that it connects [i285]. These roads were also funded by the feds.

The US highways are the predecessors of the Interstates. US41 goes from Miami to Chicago. 278 goes from South Carolina through Georgia, Alabama and keeps heading west. These again were paid for primarily by the feds.

State Highways are only "intra" state and are generally from point a to point b and might pick up some other places on the way. And GDOT pays for them and their upkeep. They are supposed to be odd numbers for north-south and even numbers for east west, but as we all know don't drive one with a compass and have it make much sense.

  4. Sorry guys...but I have a wood fired pizza oven from Brasil, and the best pizza is at my house, hands down. :p

The intense heat from the hardwood coals [something like 1200 degrees] just makes all the difference. But you have to use welding gauntlets to put the pizzas in and take them out and rotate them.

A 10" pizza with a thin and crunchy type of crust will cook in 2 to 3 minutes. B) You have to prep the oven and start the fire about 3 hours before hand though <_<

But if we are planning pizza, we have to start the dough in the morning anyway ;)

And we get to sample some offbeat pizzas like bacon, egg, and onion, or one of my wife's favorites, artichoke hearts with goat cheese. And I like fuzzy fish on most of mine

To quote a very, very good friend, "Life is good!".

Hey, you guys better be careful :o CC might get upset if you start doing his resturant critques for him. And I bet he would be good at judging pizza joints ;)

  5. The following hangs on our refrigerator, for our 2 teens [17 & 20] and is very much "on the mark" for our graduates and teenagers that like to remind us [especially this time of the year] how they know EVERYTHING....

It is credited to Bill Gates from a High School Commencement Speech [Must me nice to get Bill Gates to come and talk to your kids].

This is titled, "11 things you did not and will not learn in school". Part of his talk was about the "Feel-Good" Politically correct teachings that is creating a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept can set them up for failure in the real world.

Rule #1: Life is not fair.....get used to it.

Rule #2: The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule #3: You will not make $60,000 a year right our of high school. You won't be a vice president with a car phone until you earn both [this is several years old]

Reul #4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait until you get a boss.

Reule #5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping - they called it "opportunity".

Rule #6: If you mess up, it's not your parent's fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule #7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you are. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule #8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT! In some schools they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule #9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule #10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Reul #11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

This hangs on our refrigerator, just below the old sign that says:

    RULES OF THE HOUSE

Rule #1 - Mom is the boss!

Rule #2 - If there are any discrepancies, misunderstandings or you are not clkear about what you should do, please see Rule #1

And they say Bill Gates has never done anything else for us after the nouse and windows.

    Enjoy.

  6. BP CRS

I looked over some of the Passenger Manifests, and Victim lists that Frederick Clemens has gotten ahold of from newspapers around the Southeast that had news accounts based on someone from that city that was on the plane.

He had one from Greenville, SC, and I do recall the name Abercrombie. And this is where he was showing me some of the problems. He had 2 other lists from different cities and a different passenger list from Southern Airways. all had different surnames, initials and or spellings for several of the peolple listed. It will be something of a challenge getting it all right, and will require some good detective work tracking down any relatives that can confirm that correct names and spellings.

But with the internet and the good people of paulding.com, I think it can be accomplished.

  7. Sunflower:

The book was "Am I Alive ?" by Sandy Purl. She was the Flight Attendant in the rear of the plane. The book is pirmarily about her struggle after the acident dealing with what is now known as Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. It is actually not very detailed on the crash itself, or much about the other survivors. The other Flight Attendant, who was in the very front of the plane also survived.

Ms.Purl is still around, but to date, I have not been able to communicate with her.

    Scoutfinch:

The AJC online data only goes back to 1985. I have written them asking how we can go about obtaining information about the crash from early April 1977 papers, but to date I have had no reply.

  8. As we move forward with plans to develope and build a Memorial to the plane crash at New Hope, we will be looking for the correct names [and spelling] of all the victims, and this will not be as easy as it may soung. Southern Airways was aquired by another Airline [Republic ?] not too long afte New Hope, and that airline was eventually acquired by NorthWest.

They have no records and have even less interest helping us. When an airline acquires another airline that has had a crash, they tend to washg their hands of any bad publicity that could come with the deal.

I have been advised that all of the vicitms that died at the site, or in Paulding County should have a death certificate on file at our local Courthouse. Those victims that were transported to Kennestone or Grady will me more of a challenge.

It will take some time, and anyone who knows how to go about locating all of this data, please let us know. Frederick Clemens, the survivor who visited with us yesterday has a lot of the data, but even what he has does not always agree.

And yes, I agree that in addition to the vitims and survivors, whatever type of Memorial we build should also honor any of the local citizens of Paulding County who assisted in the effort to rescue survivors and take care of the victims. It was a traumatic experience for all.

  9. FBBC & Eddie:

Recent bio material on Mr.Einstien has also made public that he did not come up with his theory of relativity by himself. His first wife was actually a co-author of the paper that won the Nobel, and she agreed [something to do with their divorce settlement] to allow him the public credit and the Nobel Prize, but she got the money.

    FBBC,

It was a pleasure to meet you this afternoon. Interesting company that you hang out with.

I will come and cheer on the Dodge Ball, but will leave the playing to you younger guys. I got roped into an Adult Softball league [just for a little fun - RIGHT?!] a year ago at Church, and when the dust settled, the next youngest person on the team was 15 years younger than myself, and he was 10 years older than the next one. It about killed me, and I went down with a torn muscle after 6 or 8 games [thank God!].

    Later......

  10. How many of you are familiar with the Southern Airways plane crash in New Hope ?

At 4:19 pm on April 4, 1977, a Southern Airways DC-9 operating as Flight 242, crashed in New Hope, Georgia. Of the 85 persons aboard Flight 242, 62 were killed, 22 were seriously injured, and 1 was slightly injured. Eight persons on the ground were killed and one person was seriously injured; one person died about 1 month later.

I was living in East Cobb, and several days after the crash I came out on my first visit to Paulding County with a pilot friend to see where the plane had landed on highway 381. You could actually see where the wings had clipped off the tops of the pine trees along the side of the road as it came down.

What was left of the plane is buried beneath the Braly ball fields.

I often wondered why nothing has ever been done to recognize the victims, the survivors, and Paulding County inhabitants who were directly and/or indirectly effected.

The Paulding County Rotary Club is in the process of organizing a community effort to put up a memorial near the site of the crash.

We would like to receive community feedback. How do the members and visitors of Paulding.com feel about this project ?

  11. Sunflower:

Not to belittle the point, but the eating joints with tables and chairs are in Hiram becasue they can poor alcohol there.

Like it or not, it takes an exceptionally frugal kitchen staff to turn a profit on a "Nice" resturant without the benefit of a pouring license to help out. And they are all in business to turn a profit.

Not having a pouring license available in the city or the county at large does not keep bars and resturants out of the area, it just moves them to someplace like Hiram that saw the economic light [and the potential tax dollars].

Ten or twelve years ago, all the activity in the county was along Merchant's Drive in Dallas where all the "old" fast food joints are still located. There wasn't ever a burger joint east/south of the Martin's next to Community Trust Bank at 120/6

Then Hiram passed liquor by the drink, and the migration began. You can make excuses to "do it" and you can make excuses not to "do it".

  12. I have lived and been a business owner in Paulding for over 20 years, and operated a light manufacturing import/export company until I sold off the manufacturing rights over the last 3 years.

I tried and tried to get previous Commissions, and the previous Chamber hiearchy to solicit warehousing & Light industry to help create a true local economy. All to no avail.

We now have a Commission and a Chamber that understands how an economy has to work and they appear to be doing all they can to jump start a viable business base here.

The Railroad Piggyback facility in Powder Springs basically makes our county a deep water port. That is, goods on ocean container trailers can be loaded or unloaded onto boats, via the piggyback service. It reduces the inland freight costs of moving a 40' trailer of cargo by $400 to $500 to or from the ports.

This creates a demand for warehousing to strip these containers down, and ship out individual pallets via local trucking companies. And the inverse also, we consolidate shipments in a warehouse here, load the container, and ship it to Europe, South American, etc. This brings in outside money to our local economy to pay taxes, payroll, rent, utilities, etc. Right now, the containers come off in Powder Springs and go to Fulton Industrial, Marietta, Smyrna, etc. All of these areas are higher priced for building rents and in more congested areas. And, we have the unskilled work force available that these industries require [driving a forklift, packing boxes, assembly work, and other such work].

The strip shopping centers with stores and food establishments are nice and convienent, but they are only recirculating the same local dollars. But, as long as the majority of our workforce commutes, and spends a large percentage of their disposable income on transportation and at retail establishments along the way back to Paulding County,[the sales tax in Cobb County is how much ?], we will remain the same bedroom community that we are now and at some point in time our property taxes will become even more ridiculous.

A bedroom community will go broke trying to support itself without industry. This is how Gwinnett got off to such a bad start, and that was with I85, 316, and other limited access 4 lane+ highways going right through the middle. We have to be more creative in how we lure industry to Paulding County, and if they are to come, we have to provide them with the various ammenities they require.

This includes Industrial Parks, General Aviation Airport, increased sewage processing, Community Meeting facilities, access to 4 lane highways, dependable long term water supply, and more. And, we have to provide this in advance, and go out and solicit the businesses to move here.

They in turn will pay ad valorum taxes on their inventory, higher property taxes on commercial/industrial land, local salaries, local sales taxes on purchases & utilities, all with "outside" money. They will not place the burden on the local county infrastructure [publice safety, schools, etc.] per tax dollar sent to the tax commissioner.

I applaud our current Commission, Chamber, IBA, and the other associations and groups that are out there trying to accomplish this; that is to make Paulding County a better place to live, and maybe some day even to work for most of the inhabitants.

  13. I first learned of this as "Frogmore Stew", from the Frogmore Plantation in the South Carolina Low Country. The version that we are most familiar with uses seasonings such as Zatarini's or Old Bay, which "Kicks it up a notch" so to speak.

This is a great dish for feeding a crowd and the turkey fryers that have come on the market work very good for cooking the stew/boil in. Adjusting the flame to low after cooking to just keep the food warm can be a challenge though.

I also have found that boneless chicken breasts do very well in this dish and at $1.99/pound, they cut the $10+/pound shrimp and stretch the dish to feed that many more. You really need a large or extra large shrimp becasue you are peeling them and it will get quite messy.

Note that the traditional method of serving this was to cover picnic tables outside with newspaper and to pour the stew out over the newspapers. Everyone sat and picked at the food bare handed.

My family likes the broth too much to waste it like this.

  14. It seems that you would have to be foolish and a bit short on common sense to not take advantage of a service like this. No it is not as convienent as a metro rail system would be, but we are never going to see one of those so I am all for it.

Note that our lack of a reasonable public transportation system is the primary reason we all feel the pinch so bad when the gas prices go up as they have.

Not to mention the free time to read, snooze, or just sit back and enjoy the ride ["Leave the driving to us ?"]. I'm just sorry that this was not available when I was commuting. Oh well

  15. I have posted similar comments elswhere, but here goes anyway.

I am not "picking" on any political party or entity becasue I feel this is above politics. But I have to wonder why petroleum has gone through the roof with our "consortium" now controlling OPEC ?

With the Iraqi fields that are operational, plus Saudi & the Emirates, the British North Sea fields, Alaska, and the recently opened Texas fields we are controlling over 65% of the world oil market. Add in Mexico [we buy a LARGE share of their production] and it is close to 75%.

Why then have the prices shot through the roof ?

And Congress is out on this one as the taxes have not been changed.

Many of our Texas wells were capped back in the '80s when world oil prices fell back into the low $20's. They need $25 to $26 per barrel to pump from the Texas wells becasue there are various technical challenges in getting the oil. But these wells are up and pumping again.

If it is political and is an election year ploy, I think it will backfire.

If it is anything else, then I need someone to demonstrate the economics to me. The supply and demand ratios have not changed to speak of in the last 6 months, unless our own leadership is causing the supply to shrink artificially. And it that is the case, then why ?

    Comments ?

  16. In addition, the price increases on oil will lead to some very serious inflationary trends very quickly, and this will be especially true for many [most?] Paulding inhabitants based on their commuting.

This in turn will leave less disposable income to spend on other frivolous items such as dairy products.

Everything that moves anywhere will go up in price just for the fuel surcharges. And plastics will follow, along with anything that has a petroleum derivative involved. And if gas prices stabilize where they are, we will see some serious double digit inflation.

We have not seen a fuel increase that was this much this fast in close to 20 years. With the Saudi and Iraqi fields, along with the North Sea, Alaska and the Texas/Oklahoma wells that have been reopened in the last 6 months [surprise-surprise], our "free Iraq consortium" is controlling close to 65-75% of the world's oil markets.

And the price goes up 75%? What is wrong with this picture ?

Raise them now so they can be lowered in October in time for the elections ?

    Just makes you wonder.......

  17. Mason,

One of your other "finest", Republican candidates drug me over to Douglasville for a Boy Scout Committee Meeting, and it was well past "dark-thirty" by the time we got back to Paulding. So I missed your "chat". I hope to be able to follow up on what transpired with your event tonight [last night] Monday [after the Relay].

Come by the Angels [st. Vincent de Paul Angels Relay for life Team] Campsite [#7 next to the Field House] for some BBQ and Brunswick Stew. If I am there at the time, I will make sure it is "on the house" for your generous donation to the American Cancer Society.

    Best Wishes and Good Luck,
