  1. I stand corrected.

I read it, oh hell, it must have been 30 years ago.

 The book was, I believe, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and it was perfectly awful! The ONLY case where the movie Bladrunner was actually a little better. (And, one of the few instances where I was HAPPY to get rid of a book! ;) )
  2. If you complain about the speeding and can tell them the time of day, the police might be willing to set up a speed trap and give him a ticket. It would not take too many tickets for him to get the message...

If it's a company truck, is there a phone number you could call to complain?

Does anyone know how hard it might be to get Speed Bumps in a neighborhood?? I mean, Do I need special permissions or just a petition from the neighbors..or what?

We have a specific truck that likes to fly (35-40) through the neighborhood at any/all hours. He has no clue how many times he has been so close to hitting a car or person (kids especially). He does live in the neighborhood and drives a yellow truck--hard to miss him! But still, come on. There is no reason to fly down the main road or not use brakes when going around a curve. I have been discussing the speed bumps with my husband and he thinks it would be a great idea but we are not sure what steps should be taken to get them. or how many we could get??

We asked a Dallas Police officer, he said to contact City Council but I need to know what to take or share with them when and IF I can get in touch with them.

    Thanks :)

  3. I know I ain't a lady, and this might have already been said, but...

Stop paying for anything that's not in your name.

    Pay the rent.

    Pay the utilities

Pay for food for you and the kids.

    Pay your car payment.

In other words, take care of yourself and the kids and let him suffer the consequences of being out of work.

  4. That's the way property taxes work today...you buy (i.e. consume) a big house, you pay big taxes...you buy a small house you pay small taxes.

    So why change?

And that business about broadening the tax base is bull sh*t. The tax base is already broad because everthing you consume has a tax imbedded in the cost.

Didn't you read the Bootz/Linder book?

I'm in favor of implementing a national sales tax, but I think the way Boortz and Linder want to do it is stupid and reckless.

I also think what Richardson wants to do with the proterty taxes is stupid and reckless.

Right, I'll still pay taxes, but the tax base will be broadened to everyone that is a consumer. If you don't consume, then you won't pay taxes.
  5. Don't fooled by this.

It will not reduce our tax burden. The state is NOT going to cut spending, so SOMEBODY is going to pay the taxes. In fact, you might wind up paying more. Think about these things...

All the businesses that buy services (like builders who use subcontractors) will simply pass that tax on to YOU in higher prices. How are we going to know what the impact will REALLY be on the price you pay for things.

All the services you buy will cost more. Lawn care, tax preparation, medical and dental, maid services, beauty shops, house painters, etc., etc., etc.

And what about small businesses? Most new jobs in America come from small business. This is another burden on them to have to collect and remit sales taxes to the state. What about the kid who mows your lawn? Does he have to collect the tax? What about the guy who cleans your gutters? Do you think he's really going to remit that tax he collected?

It will also destabalize the tax system because the flow of tax dollars will be disrupted if there is an economic downturn. What's the first thing you do when you lose some wages? You start doing things for yourself instead of hiring them done. When that happens the tax flow into the state will drop.

Finally, don't try to tell me that all these issues will be addressed in the law. That's BS. If they really address all these things then it will be just as complicated and infested with special interest exceptions as all the other tax laws.

  6. Surepip,

As always, you did a great job.

Even the white wine that smelled like a wet dog tasted good.

    Thanks!

    JA

We had 40 or so guests and it was fun.

A BIG thanks to Jim Hatsell and Highland Beverage for all the wine, all of which was consumed [ ] and both of our kids actually came and helped out. Son actually IRONED a shirt to wear. Surprise-surprise.

And there was very, very little food left over. The mini-Veal Wellington with a wine reduction sauce was the hit of the evening, as well as the duck breast slices on toast points with goat cheese.

Thanks to all who supported this event, including EEA and Lady Tass from P.com.

    TBAR, we missed you.

  7. You don't know what you are talking about, and pretending you do is worse than lying.

Mac's get viruses too, just not so many because they have such a SMALL market share.

If you don't believe me go to symantec and search for "os x" in "viruses and risks".

I use a Mac. No virus's to worry about.
  8. My 14 y.o. son and I are planning to go to DragonCon this Labor Day weekend. We have not decided on whether to go all 4 days or just 1 or 2.

I want to go to the parade on Sat morning, but that's the only plans we have.

    Is anyone else going?

    Thanks,

    JA

  9. I have a program called Groove Mechanic that takes out the pops and splits the album into tracks for you.

It will also take the hiss out of tapes.

Just wanted to add that I bought my hubby a turntable that can be hooked up to the computer. It can play them and convert them to CD's or add them to his iPod, if desired. Cool set-up!
  10. Go to Microcenter in Marietta. You can get a NEW Acer notebook for about $400. It's a fairly nice PC. Several of my customers have boght them and were happy.

Ask about OEM version of MS Office or a Student Teacher version. If you or your kids are students the student teacher version is the best deal. You can install it on 3 PC's.

  11. Rice Dressing - aka Cajun Dirty Rice

    This is a family recipe.

chicken giblets (heart, neck, gizzard, liver. Liver is most important. Heart is least important. Must have at least one neck, gizzard and liver.)

All mesurements are approximate and per set of giblets.

    one med white onion chopped

one med garlic clove chopped (one equivalent garlic powder)

    spinkle of salt

    dash of black pepper

2-3 shots of tobasco sauce or some other hot sauce.

    2-3 tablespoons of oil.

3-4 cups cooked rice (more or less according to taste)

Put all ingredients except rice in a 2 qt sauce pan over med high heat until the giblets brown a little.

Turn down the heat to low and simmer for 20-30 minutes until liver is soft. Stir every 5-10 mintues to make sure it does not scorch.

    Take giblets out of juices.

Remove and discard the neck skin.

    Patte' the liver.

Chop the rest of the giblets. Do the neck last so it will have time to cool because the best way to get that meat is with your fingers.

Return all giblets to pan and stir one time.

    Add rice and stir.

    Et voila!

    Dirty Rice!

Eat immediately or refrigerate and reheat later.
