I just wanted to share my mother's story. A few years back, my mother was berated by a Hiram Police officer. He was at a scene of an accident and no one was directing traffic, she was trying to figure out where she needed to go to get out of the way safely.(She was not involved, just caught in traffic, so she, along with everyone else in that flow of traffic sat there awaiting instructions) In the eyes of a witness, the police officer strolled right over to her car and commenced to screaming at her. The witness stated to me that he told the officer that he should not talk to her like that, that they all were confused.
He was very ugly to her, and to the witness, and insulted their intelligence, when clearly no one knew where they should be. This was unneccesary and we called to complain to his superior, who assured us that it was not appropriate for an officer to talk to anyone like that and that he would handle the situation. It is unknown if he did, but he was rather upset.
I believe there are abuses of authority in every line of work, but we expect and should get a higher level of discipline from a law enforcement officer. I realize that their jobs are stressful, dangerous and that they do not get paid enough for putting their lives on the line, but... there is a but.... no one should abuse or take advantage of their authority at the expense of another.
