  1. Good post, Ken...

I think one of the posters who got so far out of line may have been under the influence. The writing was atypical of this person, and totally out in left field. Any of us who have met you know you had nothing to do with it.

    Pub,

Excellent response by moderating the person in question.

  2. Squeaker,

    I'm not sure...

You've made too many posts to get by as a newby.

I've seen your name lots, and it has been mentioned by others, so you might be a celeb (borderline call)

You've also made too many posts to be a Troll

That leave only a Ranter or an Elder as possible others.

    What do you think?

  3. I ran across an interesting discussion early this morning which analyzed the social roles on the internet. The original publisher of this information can be seen at:

    http://web.media.mit.edu/~golder/projects/...04abstract.html

I thought it might be fun for us to analyze ourselves on the poll, and then post your opinion of who on Pcom fits the various roles...

    So... here goes!!!!

Pubby, TBAR, Eddie Bennett for Elder

Chairman, Ken Ball, QTEE Ray Traylor, Bruce Harris for Celeb

More to come... B) <_>

  4. Interesting thread here.

Unabashedly, and without apology to anyone, I am for Ken Ball. I want to see change in this county, and prefer his style and substance to that of the incumbent. And, yes, my wife, my son, and myself are all registered voters in this county and we will vote.

There are things about the incumbent I personally do not like, find distasteful, and perhaps, inappropriate for a public official. But that's my business, my opinion, and if I choose, I'll keep the details to myself.

HOWEVER: I don't really appreciate the negative tone taken by the original post. Does the poster have a right to express himself in this manner? Possibly, possibly not...???  :o .

Here's what I mean. This website is not the property of the general public or the property of Paulding County, the State of Georgia, or the United States of America. While I certainly appreciate the openness Pat Hughes has shown here, and his lattitude in allowing dissent, he is not obligated to do so. He owns the site. He sets the rules, enforces the rules, and decides what will or will not take place here. He also bears a significant legal liability for allowing libelous or slanderous posts to remain on the site. :o

Several of you have expressed displeasure that there is negative sentiment allowed, and some candidates have expressed that they do not want to come here because of the freedom of expression, which they label as bias on Publisher's part, fearing they will face questions they can't handle well. WHAT, PREY TELL, DO YOU THINK HAPPENS IN THE PUBLIC ARENA??? I personally think they are making a HUGE mistake, but I'm not their campaign managers. There could be either mitigating or aggravating factors influencing their decisions not to post. A candidate who is not articulate facing one who is would be best advised to limit the conditions of his exposure. Use paid advertisements or media apperances to propound his position where HE controls the entirety of the message. It would not be in one's best interests to expose his weaknesses. On the other hand, one who is comfortable serving the public and is articulate, should by all means use every available vehicle to get his message out. The result, overall, is that those who read the articulate person will form opinions based on his/her published remarks, and will probably form a negative opinion on candidates otherwise unknown to them based solely on their decision not to post.

There have been several posts in this forum which accused Publisher of being biased about what is posted here, stating that he supports one or the other of the candidates. If he does, so what? He allows an extraordinarily free-flowing debate. I think he is a resident of Cobb County, and therefore has no vote in Paulding County. I have spoken to Pubby on the phone and I believe his interest in Pcom is to provide a place where content of a local interest can quickly be generated by the community served. That's what has been so good about this website. We're all writing it!!!! I know I have posted several items that some may like, and others clearly did not. But Publisher has not tried to rein me in. He has let me express my opinion. I appreciate that. One of the ways I show it is by not posting anything that is likely to generate a lawsuit against him. We owe him a debt of gratitude for the ingenuity, labor and expense of putting Pcom on the web so we can all blather to our hearts content--within limits!!! No freedom is absolute. Let us all respect the fact that there are limits, let us police ourselves when something inappropriate is posted, and keep it clean.

I would also like to point out that while the title of this thread is "NO Bruce Harris," there are several Bruce Harris defenders who have spoken up in his defense. While, once again, there is no circumstance under which he will get my vote, I think it is really kool that he has defenders here who are willing and free to speak up for him. Those who try to say Pcom is rigged and Publisher won't allow expressions other than those he supports are just plain ignorant of the facts. I really feel sorry for them in some ways. I personally think that such thought patterns do not facilitate public service very well. But that is opinion, conjecture, personal thinking and my own business!!! :p ;)

BTW, I gotta get some popcorn, too. :D B)

Now, step aside, everyone, and let the fireworks continue!!!

  5. IMPOSSIBLE!!! :(  :p

I've lived out here since '97 and the cable company that advertises on my street had 30 channels & wanted the same as DISH. There was some little rinky dink office in Rockmart that couldn't seem to understand that this was the 20th century (1997!!!), and thought they were really offering a great deal!!!. B) <_ src="%7B___base_url___%7D/uploads/emoticons/default_sad.png" alt=":(">

Cableman, what are your prices, including cablemodem? (seeing as I'm about put out with earthlink, too!!!) :o

  6. I began using Compuserve in the early 90's and appreciated their services. I then moved to Paulding county in 1995 and started working on a CNE program. The staff there were raving about a new local service I'd never heard of called Mindspring.com. So, I signed up. I was thoroughly pleased with Mindspring.

Then Earthlink bought them out. For a few years elink was very good. However, in the past couple of years, there seems to be a deterioration of their services. I've had connection problems, dropped line problems, logon problems, problems with the customer service techs who spout out answers before they even understand the problem, problems with elink's extra services fighting with Norton AV (even had one tech tell me to disconnect Norton) and I have to go over the problem with 3 or 4 people before the problems are solved. So, my expectations of good service with elink have been lowered to where I now consider them a marginal provider, and am currently evaluating what I can do to change things. I certainly do not want to go from marginal to bad or even worse.

The problems I noted began when elink started moving their tech staff solutions to overseas sites. :(

  7. Surepip,

    Outstanding post.

I know that we have the county commission and the Chamber that are working to bring industry into the county. I also know that they have enourmous jobs. I am wondering if they have some things that can be assigned to citizen groups. The question assumes tasks that can be delegated, proper job descriptions, boundaries within which to operate, and appropriate supervision. In reading what has been posted on this web site, it is more than obvious there are some intelligent people out in this county who do care about it and may be willing to do something, given the opportunity. Who knows? Maybe there are some here who would just like to help get the ball rolling...

  8. Funny thing about ages. When we fill out applications asking for ages, we usually just put the number we were when last we celebrated (or mourned, as the case may be) the date of our birth.

When we talk about it (or post about it), we usually are not satisfied with the number (some exceptions to this observation).

It's kind of like listening to children talk about how old they are...

    Johnny: "I'm free"

    Sammy: "I'm four"

Glenna: "I'm five and a half

    Josiah: "I'm almost six"

As I read these ages, I'm amused at how many "...and a half's," or ..."almost..." or nearly..." or I'll be ... on the ____ of ______."

This is not a criticism of anyone... Just an amusing observation... B) :D

  9. ephs45:

Your comment reflects that you at least read the first sentence of my previous post. I thank you for that read. It does not reflect that you read the rest of it.

If for one minute you think the media does not have influence on the clothes, values, behaviors, attitudes, motives, etc., ad infinitum, ad nauseum, that are displayed by our kids, I would invite you to conduct one simple exercise. For a six month period, watch TV (particularly MTV), listen to music on the kids radio stations, keep track of the movies, and record what you see and hear. Then go to the schools, and HONESTLY try to count the number of kids emulating what you saw on TV, on the radio, the DVD's, etc.

You seem to not be aware that TV and movies are Madison Avenue's largest marketing strategies. So many documentaries have been produced on the effects of media on the public as to be mind numbing. Just read some of them. If you think the media has no effect on the youth of our day, why do you think congress has forbidden certain "sin" industries, i.e., tobacco, alcohol, etc., from advertising at times when juveniles are watching? Annenberg School of Communications has produced an enormous number of studies revealing the degree of influence of the media upon the general population.

Then, consider the BILLIONS of dollars spent in advertising. Why do companies advertise? Basically, because they want to affect consumer behavior, change consumer values, to the point of transferring a portion of the balance in consumer bank accounts to their own!!!

I'm not at all interested in alleging naiveté, however, I think just a little effort on your part would be significantly enlightening.

But, all that begs the question. Your quote:

OMG, give me a break. I don't believe in blaming the media for the childrens behavior or the way they dress!!! Most (not all) of it starts at home!!!
seems to imply that the only factor I addressed was the media. THAT IS NOT WHAT I WROTE. Please, go back, and read the things I stated about moms:

When the house is loaded with porn rags, the TV emits porn, the computer downloads porn, the music has porn visuals and sexual lyrics, WHAT DO YOU EXPECT THE KIDS TO DO????? When mom goes through the town with hot pants three sizes too small and see thru halters, reads steamy trash novels, invites her new boytoy home for overnight, WHAT DO YOU EXPECT THE GIRLS TO DO???

    and teachers,

When teachers have never seen the word modesty, cannot understand the concept, practice everything but prudent self respect, slither all over the opposite gender, assume seductive poses, utter suggestive invitations, can't control their own genetalia, and hand out condoms, WHAT DO YOU EXPECT THE KIDS TO DO???
    and adults in general:

What does it take to change from being one of the top 10 counties in the nation for teen pregnancy? ADULTS WHO WILL GET BEYOND PUBERTY.

If my previous post was ambiguous from a lack of balance between the elements I cited of the media and the elements I cited of other influences, please forgive me. Let me be perfectly clear. The absolute biggest problem with juvenile behavior is parents who do not impose and enforce appropriate boundaries, and/or parents who abuse/neglect their children, and/or parents who do not not monitor their children and their peers appropriately. Now, PLEASE do not misinterpret what I am saying to be the ONLY problem with juveniles is parents. That is simply NOT the case. It is the case that parents are one of the largest contributing factors to delinquency.

I really think we are more on the same page than you think we are. Your comments about parents are RIGHT ON!!! I sincerely commend you for your observations... ESPECIALLY THE ONE ABOUT HAVING PARENTS PICK UP THEIR KIDS FOR INAPPROPRIATE DRESS (or other behavior for that matter).

  10. Tasha,

We've got to get together again sometime soon.

Those qualifications you've listed sound like serious medicine for the county commission. I just really hope the people in District 1 get on board and support you in this race. You have an enormous amount to offer.

I don't know Mr. Ragsdale, and have absolutely nothing negative to say about him at all. I DO know YOU, and without question, I can add that you bring to the office an integrity and character that gives those of us who do know you a huge assurance that your word is better than a contract from lots of folks.

You also are one of the kindest, most caring men I've ever met, yet have enough backbone, strength of character and wisdom to speak when appropriate, take appropriate action when necessary, and the ability to know the difference, a rare blend for any candidate for political office.

BTW, another subject entirely, when was the last time you heard from Mike Bray? I've lost contact with him, and would like to reconnect if possible.

  11. TBAR,

    There you go again...

While I'm down here chasin' this li'l ole lizzard, yore out there dragon killin'!!! :o

Yer a makin' me look bad!!! Ya know, like a bigginner all over again... <_ src="%7B___base_url___%7D/uploads/emoticons/default_unsure.png" alt="">

Wher'd ja git all 'o dat cannon fodder frum? :p :D

  12. TBAR,

    You're a hoot!!! :D

I really do appreciate your complimentary nature. You've been very kind to me on Pcom.

I'm just a little analytical, and have a bit of a background in Academics. I kinda like tying into some of this stuff occasionally, to see if the people running really have any idea what they're dealing with. Some do, some don't, some shouldn't even get outta bed in the morning... I won't bore you with continuing the personal opinion bit.

Dave seems to have it together, and I'm looking forward to his responses.

I wish Paulette would sign on. I'd like to pose some of the same things to her.

I just want to get some of the people in this county who think and are qualified for various offices into office. I want Paulding County to be able to avoid the kind of fiasco Polk has with SACS -- Accreditation Probation primarily because of an incompetent board.

  13. Dave,

WOW!!! A genuine BREATH OF FRESH AIR!!!

There is another big issue... No child left behind...

The problem, as I understand it, is that the program does NOT account for some of the uncontrollable variables. Things such as incompetent parenting (YES IT DOES EXIST!!!), students who refuse to work either in or out of class (YES THEY DO EXIST!!!), students who genuinely have cognitive disabilities and are not capable of learning at the pace of "normal" (I know, I know, the "normal" student does NOT exist!!!) students, and students with emotional/behavioral problems (I could use all sorts of DSM IV diagnoses, but I will spare you that for sake of the discussion) that will not allow them to compete academically with the so-called "normal" student.

I may be a bit misinformed here, but it is my understanding that schools are penalized on their scores (schools are rated under NCLB on a numerical basis relative to the performance of their students on specific tests) INCLUDING their scores of severely disabled students who, according to NCLB should be performing at the same levels as their peers. If they have an abnormally high number of underperforming students, the school is rated as a failing school. One of the problems this causes for the faculty and administration of such a school, is they carry the failing mark on their employment record even when the individual is not directly involved with the specific children that generated the failing numbers.

Please, I am not in favor of incompetent teachers/administrators (YES THEY DO EXIST!!!) being retained year after year to demolish the thinking skills of more students. However, I have concerns about the superb teachers deciding to opt out of problem schools because of factors that may not be controllable by school officiary. It would seem to me that system should be devised so that for certain schools within problem neighborhoods, there should be an educational equivalent of "combat pay" to induce the better teachers to try to bring their skills to the underperforming students. An inherent problem with such an approach is that parents in the most affluent sections of the community would naturally want their children to get the "best" teachers, and would probably object.

    Question:

As a member of the Paulding County School Board, how would you approach this Gordian knot?

  14. John,

Welcome to the race. I appreciated the press release, and the statements you made. I hope you will come into the forum and make your views more fully known.

Could you specifically address the matter of how your previous experience on the board and your conservative values might affect the positions and actions you would engage on the board? What specific changes do you wish to see?
