  1. A quote from someone who read her book -

"Is Ashley Smith a hero? Maybe not. Smith did not intentionally put herself in the hostage situation. However, Smith does show sincere concern for the welfare of other people. She goes back to her apartment with her captor to avoid a public shootout when she could have driven away. For once in her life, she was more concerned for others than she was in getting her next fix."

I've not read her book, but plan to.

  2. In the end, I believe that Every Knee Shall Bow and Every Tongue Confess that Jesus is Lord.

"The operative words in that statement are bolded.

I believe that so long as I live my life honestly and kindly, treat others as I'd like to be treated, and don't commit murder, no all good, all knowing, all powerful deity would doom me to eternal damnation because I didn't buy into any man-made religion." :) /quote]

I agree, the keyword is "believe". We (referring to Christians) believe this because it is a promise from God, and God always keeps His promises.

Like you, I don't buy into any "man-made religions".

As far as your other comments, this is where you and I disagree. Thankfully,

we both have freewill, and choose what we believe.

  3. Sorry, Roswell, I didn't see your post.

The very idea of the "Priesthood of the Beliver" is a distinctively Baptist idea. Basically it means that corporately, all believers make up the total body of X & there is no need to have a priest =take= us to God. X is our Great High Priest & we are priests ourselves since we need no other human to interceed on our behalf.

That also mean there is a great responsibility: we are priests & therefore have the responsibility to study for ourselves, not just take someone's word for what the Bible says. Moreover, it means we must take the greatest care to be correct.

Lastly, it means we are responsible to bringing others to God as any priest would, i.e., discipleship & evangelism.

That means we don't rely on the gov't to do that for us. We don't rely on the pastor to do that; the Sunday School teachers; the elders; etc. No, we take the responsibility to do that ourselves.

I don't know Gary Parks at FBC Decatur, but here is a text of his that explains it.

BTW, I had the chance to meet with Dr Hobbs a few years before he died. We had lunch together & we talked for several hours. He was a great man, a tremendous disciple, & a deep thinker of what real faith is all about. While I disagreed with him on his treatment of the book of Hebrews (that was an hour of our discussion) he knew his stuff, I can say that.

Ok, I only disagree on one point. While Baptist do teach & believe "Priesthood of the Believer", it is not a "distinctively Baptist idea". It applys to all Believers, regardless of their denomination. I've studied this in a baptist church, and I've studied the same in a non-denominational class. It's God's Word, not the baptist

    word.

Of course, if you are willing to concede that "Priesthood of the Believer" started with the 1st Baptist Church of Jerusalem, then I will take back MHO. :)

edit to add: I didn't have time to read your link, so I'm replying to your comments, not Gary Parks.

  4. No, the very basic tenent of faith is the priesthood of the believer. That means that each person is free in his own heart how to worship.

Ok, you lost me here. I do believe in "the priesthood of the believer",

but "free in his own heart how to worship"?

I'm really not trying to be sarcastic, but when I've studied "the priesthood of the believer", I missed this part. Once you are part of the priesthood, you aren't free. You have been bought and paid for with a price.

  5. i don't mean to be rude but this was an old covenant prayer.  jesus meant for them who were still under the old covenant to pray in that manner.

jesus had no reason to ask forgiveness of sin or tresspasses.

we may now come boldly to the "throne" which under the old covenant they could not!     sorry, i had to point this out.

I agree, Jesus did not have to ask for forgiveness of sin or trespasses, and under the new covenant,

"we may come boldly to the throne". How awesome ! :D

However, I would like to point out that ...

Jesus did not pray this prayer Himself. He gave it to His disciples, and to us, so we would know how to pray. In v. 6, He said "But you, when you pray" & v.9, "pray then in this way".

Housedoc, like you, I don't mean to be "rude". : Just want to share MHO. :)

Edited to add: Thanks Buttercup, for posting the Lord's Prayer.

  6. Again, the prayer is as relevant today as ever.

Jesus was instructing his disciples how to pray, the prayer being a model serving as a pattern for all prayer, then and now.

The first part being about the glory of God, and the last about His kingdom, provisions, pardon and protection for believers and those seeking His will.

Of course we understand by Romans 10:4 that Christ is the end of the Law.  that is a whole different subject matter.

The law no longer applies to us for salvation.  But The Lord's Prayer is to be our model prayer.

"The Lord's Prayer", as you say, is the "model" & "pattern" we as believers today should use. It is His will that we know how to pray.

  7. Forgive?? Forgive the predator who brutally attacks and rapes a little 8 year old girl then leaves her for dead in the woods?? I don't think so...

My answer is still "forgiveness". However, I won't say I would or could be capable

on my own, of finding forgiveness in my heart when atrocities as you have described happen. Sadly, these things happen every day.

  8. workin':

Well, it really looks like this is more of a problem of understanding what "faith" is all about.

"Faith" is both a verb & a noun. It is not an independant action but a cognative reaction to circumstances based on objective fact. In other words, "faith" is what you do because of what you are; you =do= because truth is real whether you see the fruition or not.

Look at what you said again & I'll highlite a bit:

Notice all the "feeling" statements. That is =NOT= faith. Faith is never based on how one feels or an emotional high. Faith is a positive, responsive act based on the objective truth of Scripture regardless how we feel.

God is God whether we feel good or bad. Truth is still truth regardless. If our faith is only real when we feel good about God/life/etc., then we have not based our faith on the objective truth but rather on subjective emotions. BTW, that is precisely what the Corinthians did & Paul blasted them for it & told them to "grow up." A mature faith is one that says, "Regardless of the emotion, THIS is the right thing & no matter how I feel, this is THE TRUTH, period."

What I am saying is this: don't confuse "faith" with an emotional feeling. That is not faith at all. Your maturing faith is now based on objective revelation, not subjective emotions. It is much harder to live by faith than it is by sight --- not only what we "see" but what we "feel." Faith accepts the ambiguity, the unknown, the unfelt & the unseen, & says, "You're still God & you're still good no matter what."

Wow Tbar. Just when I'm beginning to wonder about you, you come up with a great post like this! My faith is being restored in you. :)

Workin, the word "faith" and "believe" are synonymous.

God's promises are specific, and still hold true, regardless of our feelings & emotions.

With faith in God, we can approach Him in boldness & confidence.(Eph. 3:12.)

Approach Him boldly. Tell Him what problems/doubts you are facing today (He already knows). Ask Him to reveal Himself to you today, and to build/grow your faith today.

Remember, He is a rewarder of those who seek Him. (Heb. 11:6) He made this promise. Claim it, and believe Him. :D
