  6. Very interesting reading on State Departments website.

    http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_948.html

There is now a travel warning for Lebanon.

But before that warning this is some of the info on traveling in Lebanon.

    I esp like these parts:

AVIATION SAFETY OVERSIGHT: As there is no direct commercial air service between the United States and Lebanon, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has not assessed Lebanon's Civil Aviation Authority for compliance with ICAO international aviation safety standards. For more information, travelers may visit the FAA's Internet web site at http://www.faa.gov/safety/programs_initiat.../oversight/iasa. Official U.S. government travelers take special security measures when using Beirut International Airport.

The Department of State urges American citizens to take responsibility for their own personal security while traveling overseas. For general information about appropriate measures travelers can take to protect themselves in an overseas environment, see the Department of State's pamphlet A Safe Trip Abroad

SAFETY AND SECURITY: Recent events in Lebanon underscore the need for caution and sound personal security precautions. Former Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri was assassinated on February 14, 2005 in a car bomb attack in which 22 people were killed and many others seriously wounded; the potential for violence remains. Since February 2005, there have been 15 separate bombings in Lebanon, resulting in ten dead and 121 wounded.

U.S. citizens who travel to Lebanon should exercise heightened caution when traveling in parts of the southern suburbs of Beirut, portions of the Bekaa Valley and South Lebanon, and the cities of Sidon and Tripoli. Hizballah has not been disarmed. It maintains a strong presence in many of these areas, and there is potential for action by other extremist groups in the city of Tripoli. Tensions remain in Lebanon's southern border with the possibility of Hizballah and Palestinian militant activity at any time.

Well that about clears it up!!!
  7. I agree --- they were goofy for going over there. Vacationing in the Middle East is like going to Cleveland, OH, for a "weekend get away." Crazy.

And Webby is right when he says that, I'm sure, a goodly number of them are on the payroll of some gov't agency we've never heard of nor want to.

    But I'm not happy that:

    1) the US didn't get our folks evacuated 2 days ago. France did. England did. Sweden did. So did Italy, Germany, Spain & most other European nations. And dont' tell me it is a distance thing because Canada had a ship over their 3 days ago.

    2) that the US was, at first, going to make the US citizens pay for their transportation out of there. Uh, excuse me. These are American citizens. There are some things the gov't is expected to do & that is protect its citizens in extreme situations & I do believe waring nations would be an extreme situation.

    3) the US has, again & with much fanfare, made ourselves out to look like an inept, bungling idiot-run group of the most disorganzied nation on earth. We're supposed to be the best. The biggest. The baddest. The Standard. And every other nation already had their folks out of there & our citizens --- Americans who are part of the Red, White, & Blue --- were told, "these things take time." BULL. Every other nation managed to do it, why didn't we? Is it because someone in DC didn't consider that something like this may happen & have contingency plans? OK. Fine. Maybe we didn't. But when we saw every other nation doing it, why did we not do it =then= & do it =bigger & better= than anyone else?

    4) we are missing a chance at building some goodwill here. There are many citizens of other nations whose gov't cannot get their people out. We can. But we don't. And we squander a perfectly good chance at doing some right. Again. As usual. Pattern developing here. Screw up deja vu all over again. dwarf.gif
