I would not refer to an outbreak of Ebola on this sort of scale to be any sort of scare tactics. At least not for the thousands who died and their families.

And the other base reason is the WHO, along with our help as provided by Obama and military assistance, as well as Emory's role helped stem the tide and knock it out. Had we done nothing this would have been much, much more wide spread around the globe, which is the primary reasons for containment BEFORE it becomes a Pandemic.

Not a scare tactic by any means.

It could have been serious and the WHO etc. were behind on the seriousness in Liberia, causing the outbreak to expand beyond the small outbreaks of the past.

Still, I don't think quarantining everyone who came from that part of the world was a smart or wise thing to do - yet we did. I do think that it being an election season and the inspiration that fear gives to a certain portion of the population to both vote and not vote (can't go to the polls because the Ebola might be there.)

Surepip, we ran a poll on the crisis here on pcom. It asked, of the 900 hundred or so people who had come in contact with the man who had ebola and died in the Texas hospital, how many would contract or die of the disease beside the man who brought it?

We know that 900 people have been exposed by the man in Texas. How many of these people will come down withi ebola
  1. Of the 900, none of those exposed will contract the disease (1 votes [7.69%] - View)

  2. bullet_star_rated.png Of the 900, 1-5 will contract the disease (7 votes [53.85%] - View)

  3. Of the 900, 6-10 will contract the disease (2 votes [15.38%] - View)

  4. Of the 900, 11-20 will contract the disease (0 votes [0.00%])

  5. Of the 900, 21-49 will contract the disease (1 votes [7.69%] - View)

  6. Of the 900, 50-99 will contract the disease (0 votes [0.00%])

  7. Of the 900, 100+ will contract the disease (2 votes [15.38%] - View)

Of course we know that the answer was one ... but we saw that about 30 percent of the folks thought it was far worse.

From the discussion, we also saw that these were Pcom's more apocalyptic thinkers who were certain that we'd never get through election day ... unless we closed down the borders and kept everyone out.

It is that over-reaction that constituted the scare tactics ... and frankly, the cheese was pretty doggone deep coming into election day ... so deep it makes you want to go hummmm.
