FBI agent key defense witness in Boston Mob trial indicted for perjury

A former FBI agent has beencharged with perjury for his testimony in the trial ofmobster James "Whitey" Bulger. Prosecutors said heexaggerated claims in order to sell copies of his book.(April 30)

Meanwhile, theBoston Globe reported:

Fitzpatrick was used by Bulger’s defenseto describe corruption in the FBI and to try toundermine evidence that Bulger was an FBIinformant.

The defense contended that Bulger wasnever an informant and that Connolly fabricatedhis informant file to cover up their corruptrelationship.

Fitzpatrick said he was dispatched tomeet Bulger in 1981 to assess whether he shouldremain an informant, and Bulger told him he wasnot an informant, that he paid others forinformation.

The indictment alleges that Fitzpatrick’saccount was a lie and that he also lied aboutadvocating to drop Bulger as an informant.

He’s also accused of lying by claiminghe was assigned to the FBI’s Boston office in1980 to stop leaks that compromisedinvestigations, when it was a routine transferand he received no special instructions.

Assistant US Attorney Zachary Hafer saidin court that the six perjury counts each carrya maximum of five years imprisonment; the sixobstruction counts have a maximum prisonsentence of 10 years.
