H3N3 Flu virus threat to pets, not humans - Outbreak in Midwest

Dog flu is spreading in several Midwestern states. Dogdaycare centers and veterinary offices are takingprecautions. (April 17)

It is a highly contagious strain of the dog flu identifiedas h3n2.  Striking in the Midwest, it has infected1,300 dogs in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin.

The canine influenza virus, like the human variety, can bepassed from pet-to-pet by a sneeze, cough, or nose-to-nosecontact. It can also infect cats.

H3n2 can live on surfaces and can be carried on humanclothing and shoes and the symptoms are similar to humaninfluenza: lethargy, fever and loss of appetite.

The virus can be deadly to old, young and weak animals butcan not be transmitted to humans.
