Louise Smith Hall

 

Louise was born to Ira W. and Rebecca Smith on September 23, 1914 and was raised in Southwest Atlanta. She attended J.C. Harris Grammar School, Joe Brown Junior High and graduated from Girl’s High (1932) and Georgia State College for Women (1935). She married Robert Earl Hall from Dalton, Georgia in 1936 and taught school in Whitfield County for seven years. After moving back to Atlanta and starting a family, Louise taught school for nineteen years in Atlanta Public Schools primarily at Lee Street and Dean Rusk in West End. After the death of her husband in 1977, Louise taught another nine years in Atlanta and Paulding County.

 

As a caring and dedicated teacher, Louise strived to cultivate in her students the same valuable characteristics that she imparted on her own children; the thirst for knowledge, a hunger to learn and a desire to succeed. She worked long hours and made many home visits to insure that parents were acquainted with the performance of their children and to encourage those parents to take a greater involvement in their child’s education.

 

Louise was a long-time member of Calvary Methodist and Cascade Methodist Churches in southwest Atlanta. After moving to Hiram, Georgia in the mid sixties she became an active member of Bethel United Methodist. For many years Louise played an active and often leadership role in many community service groups including Kappa Kappa Iota (Lambda State) Sorority, Pilot Club International, Order of the Eastern Star, and the Association of Retired Teachers. She delighted in hosting annual reunion picnics at her home, “Hall’s Hideaway Family Campground”, whether for family or old church friends in an effort to maintain relationships formed in years past.

 

Her family was the light of Louise’s life and she constantly showed it through her love and support. She was a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and her family could not have asked for a more caring or stronger woman. She taught us to love, laugh, care for others and to keep a deep faith in God. She will be missed but long and warmly remembered by her family, friends, former students and fellow teachers and service club members.

 

Louise was preceded in death by her husband; her daughter, Rebecca Louise (Becky) Thompson; and grandson, Robert Christian (Bobby) Hall. She is survived by her son, Robert W. (Bob) Hall and his wife Ellen of Minden, Nevada and by her granddaughter Dr. Robin Linea Shumate and her husband Jimmy and great-granddaughters Kayleigh and Julia Shumate all of Smyrna, Tennessee.

 

Louise lived proudly independent past her 99th birthday and up until just months before God called her home on February 1, 2014.

 

Funeral services and visitation times have been rescheduled due to the weather, times are updated below;

 

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 14, 2014, at 2:00 PM, from Clark Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Chris Branscomb officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Home on Friday, February 14, 2014, from 12:00 PM until the service time.

Several years ago I had the pleasure of working on committees with Louise at Bethel UMC.

She served and loved her Lord and Bethel so very much! Rest in peace.
