Quick Tip from Metro Atlanta Landscape (Formally Harbor Bay Landscaping)

Recommended Posts

It's that time of year again; time to get your pruning shears out. Ever wonder what you should be looking for when it comes to pruning? Here's a starter's guide:

Overhanging Branches--Cut back branches leaning over your roof, porch and deck.

Watersprouts--These are fast-growing, flexible shoots growing at the base of trees that drain the energy from the tree. Cut these off at the base, where the sprout meets the tree trunk.

Storm Damage--Remove broken limbs to enable proper growth for the rest of the tree and to avoid additional damage if the branches fall on their own.

Dead Limbs--Cut off dead limbs so that they don't become diseased or infested with insects.

Crossing Branches--If branches cross and rub together, they can become diseased and infested with insects, just like dead limbs. Trim the branches so that they don't rub to maintain the integrity of the tree.

Utility Wires--Check to make sure your trees aren't touching, or close to touching any powerlines. If you can't trim these branches safely, please call a professional!

Suckers--These are like water sprouts, but they grow up from the roots in the ground surrounding the tree. Cut these as close to the ground as possible.
