Marshall T. Henderson

Marshall T. Henderson, age 89, of Hiram, GA, passed away on Thursday, December 18, 2008. A native of Paulding County, he was born, April

16, 1919, and was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Martin Henderson & Pearl Westbrook Henderson; wife, Sarah Elizabeth Dailey Henderson; and granddaughter, Lauren Sarah Hester. Mr. Henderson was a veteran of the U. S. Army and retired from Lockheed-Martin. He was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church of Dallas.

Survivors include his son & daughter-in-law, Marshall Thomas Henderson, Jr. & wife, Renee of Plainview, NY; daughter, Lynn Henderson Hester of Hiram, GA; sister & brother-in-law, Gloria Henderson Hedges & William of Henderson, KY; sister-in-law, Mrs.

J. Henry Henderson of Dallas, GA; grandchildren, Arden March Ward, Marshall T. Henderson, III, and Barrett C. Hester; great-grandchildren, Daisy Eliza Hester and Charles Robert Hester; many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, December 20, 2008, at 2:00pm, in Dallas Memory Gardens, with Dr. Gregg Potts officiating. There will be a Memorial Service on Saturday, January 3, 2009, at 11:00am, from the First Baptist Church of Dallas.

Was this the same Henry Henderson that lived in the Henderson house there in Dallas?

My grandfather was Eugene Henderson and I belive they were related somehow.

THE HENDERSON FAMILY

Just as the property deeds in the 1800’s referred to the house as the Jacob Owen property for decades, The Henderson House will surely bear the name of the Henderson family for years to come. The Hendersons, who owned the house from 1894 until 1983, made an indelible mark and lasting impression on the property. It is said that auras of the past remain behind long after the inhabitants have left. This is true of the Henderson family and of the family’s effect on the Henderson House.

The Henderson family were the last owners of the house to actually live in the house and call it home. One has only to look at the renovations and additions attributable to the Hendersons to know the pride the family took in their home place. Many of the surviving family members still have very fond memories of staying in the house and visit periodically to recall those memories.

John H. Henderson

John H. Henderson, whose occupation was listed as farmer in the Paulding County census records, bought the house from R. L Rawls on January 16, 1894 for two hundred ten dollars. John Henry Henderson, the first Henderson besides Mrs. Dennis (Eliza Henderson) Hills, to own and live in the house, was born on January 16, 1847. John married Rachel Francis McEver Henderson on December 6, 1866. They had twelve children, seven of which were living at the time of the 1900 census. Some of their children include Jefferson, Mary, Nancy, Henry Martin, Milton, Frances, Oliver, James and Robert. According to family records, John Henderson was a Civil War Veteran. John Henderson died January 22, 1925 and Rachel died on March 1, 1918. Both are buried beside several of their children in the Mt. Zion Baptist Church cemetery.

Henry Martin Henderson

Henry inherited the house after the death of his father, John, in 1925. However, Henry and his wife had already moved into the Henderson House in order to care for John Henderson after the death of Henry’s mother, Rachel, in 1918. Henry was born on December 21, 1883 and married Pearl Maude Westbrook on July 11, 1909. Henry Henderson, a carpenter, was responsible for many additional renovations to the house.

Henry and Pearl had several children together: Fairis Ladelle Henderson Henslee, Annie Kathleen Henderson Anderson, Gloria Virginia Henderson Hedges, Sarah Joyce Henderson Jones, John Henry Henderson, Hubert Frederick Henderson, and Marshall Thomas Henderson.

Henry Henderson died May 17, 1970 and the home passed to his estate.

 

Mrs. Fairis Ladelle Henderson Henslee

The daughter of Henry Henderson, Fairis Henslee, acquired the house in June, 1977 and was considering moving back to Dallas to live. Before her plans were completed, she died in October 1977.

Fairis was born May 1, 1910 in Dallas, Georgia. She graduated from Dallas High School and had some additional training at the Atlanta Conservatory of Music. On June 29, 1929 she married Frank Weldon Henslee. They had a store in Cartersville until Fairis moved with him to Lexington, Kentucky in the early 1930’s. Frank owned a men’s clothing store there called Frank’s which he ran until his death in 1959. Fairis was a homemaker and mother to their two children, Frances Virginia and Myra Anet. Fairis was reportedly a wonderful seamstress and a very accomplished pianist.

 

Mrs. H.H. (Myra) Moody and Mrs. Walter (Frances Virginia) Marcum

Mrs. Henslee’s daughers inherited the house after their mother’s death. Mrs. Moody and Mrs. Marcum never actually lived in the Henderson House. After their mother’s death, several members of the family used it for temporary housing or office space.

Myra Henslee Moody was born in Rockmart, Georgia on May 19, 1932. She moved with her parents, Fairis and Frank Henslee, to Lexington, Kentucky in the early thirties. There she graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in Business Education. She married Henry Hatcher Moody on October 8, 1954. She and Henry had two children, Melinda Ladelle Moody Weller (Mrs. Michael Joseph), and Myra Annette Moody Glenn (Mrs. Stephen Griffin). They had numerous grandchildren: Daniel Joseph Weller, Benjamin Henslee Weller, Matthew Collins Weller, and Griffin Taylor Glenn. Mrs. Moody moved to Bremen, Georgia in 1961 and has lived there since that time.

Frances Henslee Marcum was born in Rockmart, Georgia on May 17, 1930. She moved with her parents to Lexington Kentucky in the early thirties. Frances graduated from the University of Kentucky with a BA and received her MA from Eastern Kentucky University. Frances gave twenty years of service as a First grade school teacher before her retirement. She married Walter Marcum on July 8, 1960 and they had two children, Polly Henslee Marcum Marguette and Frank Dwayne Marcum.

The Henderson house stayed in the hands of the Henderson family until 1983.
