Hiram councilman candidate credentials

to be challenged in coming week

Presumed Hiram resident and candidate for that city's Post 1 Council Post George D.D Turner, a local businessman is having his residency qualification challenged, Paulding.com has learned.

The news came out at the Hiram Council meeting last week as the interim Mayor Jack Paris was authorized to enter into a contract with the county's Election Board to have them hold a hearing on the matter. Once the contract is approved by the county, which should take place at Tuesday's commission meeting, a hearing on the challenge to Turner's qualification to run will be set.

Turner, along with Stephen S. Bray and Prather "Pep" Rollins are seeking the Post 1 councilmember spot in the November 8th city elections. That seat was vacated by Hiram interim Mayor Jack Paris, who is unopposed in his bid for Mayor. Additionally, Post 2 councilwoman Helena Williams has been challenged by Kathy Bookout.

In other business the County will recognize Jody Martin as their Employee of the Month and also present Leslie Ashworth the Public Safety Appreciation Award for her work in the Marshal's Bureau, let a contract for renovations at the Region's Bank Building in downtown Dallas for the Economic Development Commission and also 911, and declare some 16 vehicles, including a 1986 Hearse used for the Dare program and a 1980 Ford Bus surplus.

Paulding County Heart Walk and Health Fair this Saturday, September 17, at Dallas' White Oak Park

Talking about heart health, obesity and diabetes can be fun. At least that is the goal of the local chapter of the American Heart Association as they host this year's Heart Walk and Health Fair at White Oak Park beginning at 9.a.m.

Dr. Wellbee will be there to meet and greet the children and the whole family is invited. Activities include music, face painting, games for the kids and even a visit from the Fire Department. Prior to the walk noted local cardiologist Dr. Harvey Sacks and Dr. Noel Battle will speak. The actual walk will be led by 'red-cap' survivors and blood pressure screening will be available.

COBB EMC ordered to hold meeting of members Saturday

Pursuant to the Final Order and Judgment entered by the Honorable J. Stephen Schuster dated December 3, 2008 in the matter, Edgar "Bo" Pounds et al. v. Dwight Brown et al., Civil Action File No. 07-1-9408-48 pending in the Superior Court of Cobb County, Georgia, a Special Meeting of Members of Cobb Electric Membership Corporation ("Cobb EMC" or the "Company") will be held at Piedmont Church, 570 Piedmont Road, Marietta, Georgia on Saturday, September 17, 2011.

Paulding residents who have their electric service provided by Cobb EMC, as well as Cobb residents visiting Paulding.com are encouraged to cast their vote in the special called meeting set for Saturday.

Notably, Cobb EMC Watch and others consumer groups and environmentalists are critical of the actions of the board and management of this electric membership co-operative accusing them of a pattern of self-dealing are fearful that the board will win in its bid to control elections by converting to a mail-in system. Indeed, a technicality discovered by defense attorney Roy Barnes resulted in an indictment against Cobb EMC president Dwight Brown's being thrown out.

Consumer advocate Clark Howard said in 2009 ""Remove every - every - incumbent board member of Cobb EMC, and get the stench out of there." Though scheduled annually, the board has litigated the issue and there has not been a board election since 2007

Howards' concerns were raised after the board set up Cobb Energy as a private corporation paying board members and Brown separately as the owners/director of the private company. The board approved a sweetheart deal that leased the company they owned the plant, system and workers from Cobb EMC
